6. Lenons girl

1503 Words
Lenon gave her a grin when she stepped out of Zander's office. He was awfully happy that she was interested to work with them. It seemed like he was trying to flirt but his smile was genuine. She was taken back by that because no one in the New York office bothered to get to know her or expressed their happiness. "Are you ready to see the magic room?" Lenon said rubbing his hands together. Her lips twitched at that. Magic room? Before she could ask he answered the question, "Its where we store the types of equipment required for the farming" "Uh...sure" She shrugged her shoulders. That's the first thing she should know. As she walked along with Lenon her eyes fell on the photos on one side of the wall. It featured Zander along with the people dressed in flannels and holding apples. The genuine laughter on their faces made her feel guilty for a second. Was she doing something wrong? No-no-no. She shook her head. That was dangerous thinking. She had one job and that was to get the sign and not think about anything else. Zander had more than one orchard he can survive losing one. As she stepped into the room through the door her eyes widened. It was gigantic. "This is it" Lenon exhaled noisily, a smile on his face. There was a tall machine up against one wall with lights shining onto the belt. It seemed like a mower but she could be wrong. To the left of the machine were a stack of crates and to the right another door with a sign. Lenon walked over that door and peeked his head inside and said something to someone on the other side. A moment later, he stepped away, and another guy came through the door, pushing a cart with crates filled with apples on it. Or called bins. "This is James. He's the packer" Lenon motioned towards the guy with striking features. Even the guy was wearing flannels and it made her question their fashion choices. Whatever happens, she was not going to wear them. James whistled, his eyes raking over the expensive suit she was wearing, "You sure you are going to last here?" She flashed him a sweet smile, "Aww James I promise that I won't take your job" A laugh slipped out of his lips, his curly hair bouncing as he shook his head. He had an amused smile on his face as he stared at Lenon, "Well I'm going to have fun working with this one" "Wish I could say the same" Sanaah said in a joking tone and for a second she regretted saying it out. What if he gets offended? But every thought flew out of her mind when James and Lenon burst out laughing. "Feisty I like it" Lenon pushed at his arm, "Now James go back to work I have to show her around" "Si" James mockingly saluted and then sauntered back inside the room. She watched him with an interesting gaze as he swayed his hips as if to get her attention. So extra. Lenon cleared his throat, "Ignore him he's always like this. Trust me you won't have any problems with him. He's fun to work around" "No I'm fine he just made things even more interesting" Lenon then began explaining everything. He began with the basic knowledge about sprayers and how to avoid getting them in your face. The fertilisers, mowers, picking buckets, ladders, and boxes or bins to load with apples. The types of equipment needed to transport the full boxes or bins back to the storage facility were on the backside so they can easily exit the orchard. She noticed that the orchard ladder looked like an extension ladder with an extra supporting leg, giving the ladder a tripod appearance. It was just a bit fancy than the usual one. Apparently, they were done with pruning but still, he explained about the equipment such as hand-held clippers, loppers, saws, pole pruners, pole saws, and a power pruner. Halfway through she wanted to sleep because Lenon had a deep, soothing voice. "Am I boring you?" He asked as a yawn slipped her lips. Cheeks flushed she shook her head. "Sorry I didn't sleep well last night" "Oh alright. We are end anyway don't worry" She didn't say anything to that. Lenon continued, "This orchard is around 150 acres so we have divided each type of apples into fifteen acres." Her eyebrows scrunched, "Does that mean you grow ten types of apples?" "Exactly! Our first type in Honey crisp. Usually, these ten varieties need picking during late August or September that's why we don't get workers around these months. Most of them in Minnesota have orchards and they all pre-book the workers so it's difficult to get anyone to work around these months" She hummed. No wonder Zander didn't even talk about the incident earlier and gave her the job. He must be truly desperate to have someone work in the orchard. "Which apples are you picking now?" She questioned, staring outside the window. It overlooked the orchard. "We are focusing on Honeycrisp, Jonagold, golden delicious and red delicious. Let's just walk outside you'll get the things I'm talking about" She nodded her head and obediently walked behind Lenon.  There was no doubt that she felt exhausted in that storage room. Besides she had to meet the rest of them. Actually, she heard about Neil and his sister, met James and Zander. Only two more of them were remaining. "Where are others?" Sanaah asked, pushing through the orchard trees. Lenon looked over his shoulder, "Kenny and Keith are both picking the apples. You'll meet them as we pass by." "Are they brothers?" "Twins actually. How did you know?" She shrugged, "Just guessed from their names." After one hour of exploring the orchard land which was mind by was still half done she was tired. Lenon sensed that and told they should go back to the counter to meet Neil and his sister, Nina. She felt like hugging him for saying that but held back. *** Zander was with Nina. As in he was sitting in front of her, laughing like she was Amy Schumer. Were they a thing? Sanaah thought bitterly as she stared at the way Nina's leg was brushing against Zander. Who even sits on the table like that? Also, why does Zander have to spread his legs on the table? "Guys" Lenon slapped the back of Neil, getting their attention which made her scoot back. They all brightened up seeing Lenon and she felt like she was intruding. "This is Sanaah" Nina squinted her eyes at Sanaah, "Are you Lenon's girl?" The guy she already saw with the iPhone on the first day snorted, "He wishes!" He must be Neil she thought but then her eyes searched for Zander, thinking that it would make him angry. He was quiet. Too quiet for her liking. She felt Lenon nudge at her arm and noticed that he asked her something. "Sorry what?" "I was saying that you are the newbie here" "Yeah, I guess" She gave a tight-lipped smile and shifted on her feet. Why was she feeling that way? Zander was allowed to date whoever he liked. Maybe it was her fault for finding him attractive. She needed to stay away from him. Nina giggled hopping off the table and pulled her arm, "That's so cool. Finally, someone, I can actually have a conversation with" Neil snorted, "Hey what about us?" "I don't think brother that you would like to hear me talk about other boys" So she was right. That guy was Neil. He grimaced at his sister's tone and shook his head like the mere thought made him nauseous. Lenon laughed at that face. "When are you joining?" Nina asked with a wide smile on her face. Sanaa wanted to say something snidely and move on from there. After all, this was the girl who was dating Zander but Nina had been nothing but nice to her. Too warm and welcoming. Maybe that's why Zander was interested in her. Also unlike others, she wasn't wearing flannels. Her cute blue sweater was hanging off her shoulder paired with long black skinny jeans. She had her hair coloured by side and rest of them tied in a high ponytail. If anything she reminded Sanaah of her best friend from school Violet who simply coloured her hair violet to suit her name. "From tomorrow" Sanaah answered, her fingers pressed in a fist by side. She could feel Zander's heavy stare on her face at the answer. Was he expecting her to walk away? Well, he had another thing coming then. She never backed away from a challenge. "You've made up your mind then?" Zander asked meeting her eyes. "As I said before I don't back away from a challenge" His lips pulled in a smirk, "I can't wait for tomorrow then Sanaah" ***
