Sanaah chewed on her lips as she stood outside the door. She was aware that Zander was waiting on the other side and it made her extremely self-conscious. This is ridiculous She thought. Sanaah Davis was extremely confident who's achieved more than anyone at the age of twenty-five.
Christian once told her that she was the best asset for their firm. Her award for the best employee was still shining behind the glass drawer. She was offered to be the paralegal at the Senator office in States but she rejected. That's how in demand and popular she was but standing in front of that wooden door nothing seemed to motivate her. You would think that the three years of her life in New York, the city that is highly competitive and originated the phrase dog eat dog world must have trained her for it.
There was just something about the air in Minnesota. That's the only reason why she got so nervous to be near him. Right? It should explain the reason for her to bolt away from Zander's mansion.
Swallowing the lump formed in her throat she raised her hand and softly knocked. The sound echoed softly around the hallways and fortunately, it was empty. Lenon was back to the counter because Nina didn't want to hold it anymore. Actually, she was not informed about Nina earlier. Nina was Niels sister and worked part-time for some extra pocket money. Sanaah was surprised about a female working in the orchard and no she was not being sexist just the idea of the small town encouraging women to work took her by surprise.
"Come in" A gruff voice sounded from inside. This is it. She thought and twisted the doorknob.
She stepped inside and noticed Zander. He was seated in a plush expensive-looking chair and focused on flipping the pages. She took her time to admire him. He was dressed in a button-up shirt for a change and maybe that's as much formal he can get. His hair was ruffled like he had been tugging on them repeatedly.
He lifted his head only his eyes widened when he noticed her. Sanaah's cheeks heated up at his stare. Zander didn't say anything for a few seconds like he was fish mouthed, staring at her as if she was an alien. Unable to bear the silence any longer she softly coughed.
"Good Morning"
Zander averted his eyes, obviously embarrassed at being quiet. He raised from his seat and towered over her. She raised her eyebrows as he pushed his hand forward to shake it. Why was he not laughing on her face? Or better yelling at her to get out? After all, she embarrassed him in the middle of the road.
"Hi I am Zander Rizzo"
Taking his hand she nervously smiled, "Sanaah Davis"
Her breath hitched in her throat when he nodded his head, lips twitching by his side. She couldn't help but admire his sharp jawline and the perfect way he smiled. How was she going to work with him when he looked like that? Not to mention that his rough hands were large against her softer ones just like every part of him. He could easily pick her up, bite and mark her up against the wall and she wouldn't even complain. That kind of thoughts made her lips to part and she immediately pulled her hand away. She blamed her stupid non-existent s*x life for having thoughts like these. He was going to be her boss if everything works out well. She cannot be dreaming of being under him.
"Welcome to Rizzorchard" She focused on the way those words slipped out of his mouth. It was clever, the name because he managed to combine his surname with the orchard.
"Thank you. It's very beautiful"
He hummed, his eyes gleaming "Thanks"
Then again it must be everyday people compliment him on his orchard. He should be used to it by now.
"How may I help you?" He asked while pointing at the chair. She pulled a chair and waited for him to sit down in front of her.
She forwarded the file she was holding. Staying up late she managed to print out her resume, experience certificate and few of her achievements she backed up on her pen drive. They surely came in handy and her stupid brother was taunting her for carrying the drive everywhere. Well who's laughing now?
He pulled his brows together and accepted the file. His fingers faintly brushed against her knuckles and she held back a gasp. The touch sent an electrifying sensation through her body.
"I'm... here for the job"
He was quiet at that, blinking his eyes at her like she spoke some foreign language. His fingers glided through her file, eyes widening at few instances and well she's used to that. Sanaah skipped a grade because she was too smart to be in fourth class. Not only that but also she graduated from New York Law School, one of the top universities of New York. She was offered a scholarship as well and her mother cried and her father was holding back his tears. It was a whole thing.
Zander spluttered a laugh, "Wow you're too overqualified to be picking apples"
His laugh was deep and sultry almost sending shivers down her spine. It also made his eyes to crinkle around the corner she liked that.
"I know-" She cleared her throat, "This is my vacation and there's nothing more I would love than to work in an orchard. Nature always interests me and I'm here for a few weeks so I thought why not"
Zander looked torn at her words. Well, she was an expert liar and people easily fell for her round face and puppy eyes. She had to convince him somehow that she was the best candidate for the job.
"I don't know-"
"You don't have to pay me Mr Rizzo" She started, gritting her teeth together, "I'll work for free. I need this."
Zander pinched his nose, staring at the file in his hand before letting out a sigh, "Sure. We wouldn't let you work for free though. Five dollars per hour, you have to be on time and in work clothes. "
"Work clothes?" She scrunched her face. No way in hell was she going to wear those hideous flannels.
"Do you really think working in the field in the suit is wise?" He drawled. She didn't know he was capable of being sarcastic but of course. The last encounter should have taught her that.
"I'll manage something"
Then as if she realised she gawked at him, "I got the job? Just like that?"
"Well, you're the only one who showed up on time and have this huge file so why not?"
She blushed at his words. It was nice knowing that people did respect punctuality around here. Maybe they are not as different and crazy than she though. Just maybe she can manage to work and get his signature.
"Thanks, I guess"
He shrugged, "We don't really interview the candidates because most of them just want to be in this room."
She looked around and she could imagine why. There was a large espresso machine and comfortable couch nestled in the corner. The pool table along with the huge tv on top was extra lavish and something she didn't notice at first. It seemed like the fun zone. The other side seemed too professional. A cabin was attached to the side. Must be Elijah's cabin. There were three pots on the window overlooking the entire orchard. Beside that a huge rack filled with all kinds of books and a painting above Zander's chair. It seemed similar to Flowers in a Vase painting.
"Lenon will show you around today so you can understand how it goes. Even after seeing everything if you're still interested in working here then be here by seven am in the morning" Zander cleared his throat.
"Is that a challenge?" She asked, meeting his eyes. Waking up early every morning would be annoying but that's something she had to do for the job. Besides only a few weeks and then she'll have Zander sign those papers and walk out of there as nothing happened.
He smirked, "If you want it to be"
"Well it's settled then. I'll see you tomorrow"
He stood up, laughter in his eyes at her confidence. If anything she never backed down from the challenge. She shook his hands once again, a challenging look in her eyes.
"I am excited to have you with us then Miss Davis"
She corrected him, "Please call me Sanaah"
"Okay Sanaah"
She licked her lips at the way her name rolled off his lips. It never sounded so sensual before and she unknowingly purred. She was met with his stormy grey eyes and was there a hint of lust in them? She daringly matched his eyes, "I can't wait to work under you too, sir"
