Chapter 12

Dante - It had been a few weeks since we had gone to the palace. We did get regular updates and were informed when all of they all agreed to sign a peace treaty. We hadn’t gotten far on figuring out who was after Ember. However, we had been able to figure out some of her powers. We continued her training. Specifically focusing on her ability to fight in Dragon form. She is still a bit unsteady. It was improving as time went on. Vatra and I were finally getting to a good place. It took come compromises, but things were looking really great for the two of us. I still haven’t been totally honest with her about my situation, but I’m worried about how she will react. Our days were running together as we all fell into a rhythm. Today for some reason felt off. I was on high alert and it was bothering me. I spoke with Alpha Damascus and Ember and they felt it too. By the tension around the pack grounds, everyone could feel it. I grounded Ember from air travel for the day. She needed the practice, but with something feeling off, we needed to prepare for whatever it is. She also had to stay by my side the whole day. That she was not terribly thrilled about. Luckly Vatra was busy so I didn’t have to contend with the both of them. Towards the evening, I tried to calm down. I was closing my eyes when the alarms started going off. Over the radio I got a call that there was a suspicious black fog rolling in from the south. I told them to keep back until I got there. I chose to go ahead and fly. It would take nearly 30 minutes to walk and I needed to get there now. As I closed in, I heard a beautiful music. It sounded heavenly and not of this earth. I landed and started screaming at everyone to close their ears. I called over to Alpha Damascus. We are under attack by the Sirens. Dragons aren’t affected by them as we were once dark creatures. Why would they be here? Alpha Damascus came to a half in wolf form with a bag in his mouth. They were ear plugs. Vatra landed next to me and shifted. She ran to each pack member and gave them a pair. Now the fight was on. Sirens look just like humans but they have unmatched beauty. It was an otherworldly beauty. If you didn’t know about their second set of teeth, you may fall into their clutches. As they emerged there had to be 300 of them. The leader sauntered forward. “Give us the Phoenix and we will leave in peace. This isn’t your fight wolves.” She was looking directly at Alpha Damascus as she spoke. She then turned her gaze to me. “Oh, a two for one here.” It wasn’t a question but a statement. She smiled. “What do you want with us?” I yelled. “The humans want the Phoenix dead, but they will be quite intrigued to hear you are still alive.” I could see the curious glances towards me. “Why does he matter?” Barked one of the pack members. She smiled a wicked smile. I could see her second set of teeth delicately hid behind her human teeth. “Oh, you haven’t told them?” She paused only a moment. “Why young wolf, you have Dragon royalty in your midst. This is King Dante of the Dragons.” I felt when Vatra gave me a glare. “They aren’t going anywhere with you snake.” She spit out. “Too bad. Now you all must die.” With that the Sirens behind her ran forward and so began the battle. I was in the midst of the battle. Several got me with their claws, but I was able to keep going. We had a second set of warriors headed our way. Their arrival deterred the Sirens some. I could hear wolves’ snarls and barks. Several whined as they were hurt. Alpha Damascus was plowing through them as if they were air. Many laid dead as the fighting came to a stop. I looked around as I ripped the heart from the one, I was fighting. I couldn’t see the body of the leader. There weren’t 300 bodies. Some of them must have fled when they saw they weren’t winning. As I turned, I heard Vatra scream. She had one with its jaws clamped on her upper arm. She was able to shake it off, but went down shortly after. I ran towards her and quickly ripped the woman’s head from her body. She didn’t see me and barely made any noise. Vatra was laying on the ground, unconscious. My heart hurt. I could feel her pain. They had poisoned her with something, but what? Her skin was clammy and I could feel her body temperature rising. Alpha Damascus came over and linked for the doctor. Several warriors attempted to help me move her to the hospital, but I wasn’t having it. I shifted and took her delicately in my claws. Flying was going to be much faster. The doctors met me outside the hospital. I gently placed her on a gurney and shifted back. “Do you know what she was poisoned with?” He asked. I shook my head in response. A grim expression on my face. The doctor yelled out orders as they took her in. I followed behind silently. They allowed me into the hospital room with them as they weren’t sure yet what they were doing. Nurses were running in and out of the room. Brining in machines and IV fluids. Vatra was still breathing on her own, but her blood pressure and oxygen levels were dangerously low. They took several vials of blood and swabs of her wounds. The chaos quieted down and I looked to the doctor. “We have to wait for these tests to come back so I know what she is poisoned with. For now, just be by her side. It will help.” He looks at me apologetically. I nod. Carefully I took her cold and in mine and sat at the edge of her bed. Now to wait.
