Lew went back to Mira’s room to wait for them. Mira was propped up on a mountain of pillows, to all intents asleep. Tally sat in an easy chair beside the bed, holding her hand. He exchanged glances with Lew. “Got through?” he asked, quietly. “Yeah. They’re coming. Half an hour, they said. Do you want to go and get something to eat?” Tally shook his head. He clearly wasn’t leaving Mira’s side. They’d moved her into a private ward at Mile End as she started to recover. The room was comfortable and looked as if it should have contained another three or four beds. The bedstead was a standard metal hospital one, but the pillows and the mattress looked soft and the curtains were a pale buttery-primrose color that brightened the institutional pale green of the walls.
