Chapter 2

2234 Words
I quickly pack my groceries into the house and head for my bedroom. If Ron is really announcing me as his Luna I want to look presentable. Maybe my words from yesterday actually got to him and this is his way of making up for a whole year of ignoring me. My stomach flutters at the thought of Ron throwing me a surprise party. I pick out a pretty white dress and head for the bathroom. Two hours later, I stared at myself in the mirror and smile at how pretty I look. My phone’s buzzing draws my attention and I reach for it. The caller ID shows ‘mom’ and I smile before picking. “Mom…” “He is going to do it, he is finally making a move!” she shrieks and my smile widens. “You weren’t aware of it?” I pick up a black and white bag and try to decide which would look best with my dress. My parents were the biggest supporters of my relationship with Ron, though sometimes, it felt like their loyalty to their Alpha was bigger than their obligation to me as my parents “The poor boy, he must have planned it all on his own. I told you he would come around, men just need patience and love and they would come around. Your father and I just got an invitation and he is very excited,” I can see her beaming brightly. But it still sounded weird that he would not tell my parents about the surprise. Another errant thought runs through my mind. What if I’m not the mate he is announcing to the pack? Who else would he announce though; everyone knows I’m his mate. It’s only expected that a celebration of his Luna will be about me. Then why didn’t he tell my parents? Why is no one here to lead me to the party? It’s not adding up. Shaking my head, I rid myself of such thoughts and smooth out my dress. I will just wait for him. He will come for me. *** I remember the first time I met Ron, to my twelve year old mind, he was what prince charming would look like. He acknowledged me with a nod but my face got so red, my father used to tease me all the time about it. We had been at war with rogues and every able bodied warrior was on the battlefield except my father, mother, and a few other warriors who were left behind to protect the other pack members. My mother and father had been in charge of protecting the Alpha and Beta’s mate and their children and they had brought me along in an effort to multi-task. I remember it like it was yesterday even though it happened eight years ago. I had gotten into a fight with the Beta’s son, Dalton, over the last piece of cookie. We had just received news that the war was over and our side was victorious and in a celebratory mood, the Luna had let the children have her famous cookies while the adults celebrated with wine in the living room. Dalton and I had stood in the middle of the Alpha’s kitchen and thrown every curse word we ever heard our father’s use at ourselves while Ron watched us amused. We had been so invested in our fight, we didn’t notice the two rogues creeping in through the window until it was too late. One threw Dalton against the wall while the other went up the stairs and when Ron had placed himself bravely in front of me he was easily knocked out. I had put up a fight, using my new set of canines that had just come in. I dug into his thighs but that wasn’t enough. I remember there was a sharp pain at the back of my head before everything went black. When I came to, I was on a bed in the pack hospital. As it turns out the rogue had broken a glass bowl on my head, the same glass bowl containing the last piece of cookie I wanted, and some of the shards had lodged itself in my skull but the pack doctor was able to fix me. I still get slight headaches from time to time because of the injury. Luckily, my parents were able to stop the rogue just before he could flee with Ron but the other rogue escaped. The Luna and her son were saved but it was still a day of mourning for the pack. We mourned the loss of the brave warriors who died in the war, and we mourned the loss of our Alpha who had died while saving his Beta. Dalton always says that Ron was never the same after. My parents were heavily rewarded for their constant loyalty and service to the pack, one of them being a promotion of my rank in the pack. My father was ecstatic about the title and showed me off to whoever would listen to ‘the Alpha’s little savior’ and when we found out I was his mate, it was more publicity for me. I was just happy I got to hang out with Ron all the time and slowly fell in love with him. *** I smooth my hand over my dress again and look at my wristwatch. It’s been over an hour and no one has come to get me. Ron wouldn’t really give my position to someone else, right? Another hour goes and after checking outside my window and seeing no one, I grab my coat and bag. I will just find out for myself. I make the drive to the pack house in a debate between my heart and my mind. I want to believe that Ron has a good reason for celebrating his Luna without telling me, the Luna, but all facts say something is amiss. I press down on the accelerator, the faster I reach there the sooner I get my answers. Immediately I reached the pack house I quickly hopped out of my car and headed for the backyard. With my werewolf senses, I pick up the sound of people laughing and moving around. The minute I walk in, people start throwing me glances. I walk up to my father who is animatedly talking with two men. He smiles immediately when he sees me, “If it isn’t my little Luna,” he throws his hand around my shoulder and positions me in full view of the two men, “Look at her, she looks beautiful,” they nod their approval. “Where is mom?” I asked, already feeling uncomfortable with so many eyes on me. “Honey,” I turned around to see mom walking towards me with her hands outstretched for a hug. I free myself from my father’s grip and walk into her embrace, “You are all grown up now. I’m so proud; your patience is finally going to pay off.” I smile at her as she smooths my hair, “Did you drive here?” “Yeah I couldn’t wait for Ron forever,” she gives me a horrified look. “You should have kept waiting. What if he is at your place right now to pick you up, you are always so impulsive,” she scolds me, her hands going to dress and straighten out whatever she thinks is not proper, “Straighten up, you are slouching. The future Luna should not have such a posture.” “Yes ma’am,” I stand as tall as I can manage in the heels. “When the Alpha comes, you will apologize to him for coming to the party on your own, is that clear?” “Yes ma’am,” I say again. The murmurs of the guest suddenly stop and I turn to see Ron walking towards us. His entire being commands respect as people bow to him as he walks past. His expression is stony even though he is staring at me and I can’t tell what is going through his mind. “You came,” is what he says when he reaches us. “Well, it is a party to celebrate the Luna,” my mom says cheerfully beside me. He barely looks at her before turning away and walking up the stage, “Good evening everyone, it is my honor to have you all here today to witness what will be a turning point in our pack's history…” “Olive,” a voice interrupts me and I turn to see Dalton smirking at me. I never liked Dalton but have to tolerate him because he is Ron’s Beta. Dalton on the other hand is as open with his hostility as Ron is aloof. He gives me a once over and I feel like covering myself up, “Nice dress,” he brushes past me before I can reply. “Terrible young man,” my mom says as he leaves, “But he is the Beta.” “Unfortunately,” I say under my breath. “…so it is on this wonderful note I announce my Luna and partner…” “It’s your cue,” mom all but pushes me forward. And I try to walk forward without tripping on my heels but as I look up at Ron something in his eyes freezes me on the spot, there is so much hatred in them. “Please welcome Freya,” he says, not breaking eye contact with me, “Your new Luna and the love of my life.” There is silence at first as everyone looks around confused. Someone suddenly shoulders past me and I finally trip on the heels and fall to my knees. Looking up, I come face to face with the most beautiful woman I have ever seen but currently. Clear porcelain skin framed by raging red hair, she is also wearing a white dress. She scowls at me before walking up to the stage to join Ron. “I don’t understand,” I say but it comes out as a whimper as I watch my mate kiss another woman. He is staring at her like she is the most precious thing in the entire universe and my wolf doesn’t like it. Everyone believed I didn’t have a wolf because I have kept Eva, my wolfie, to myself ever since I wolfed out since my 16th birthday but I was too timid to show her to the world. Eva wanted to rip off the woman’s hand on his arm but I calmed her down as I didn’t want to create a scene. Ron turns back to the stunned audience, “No applause for your Luna?” His tone is dangerous and everyone slowly starts clapping. I remain on the ground till I feel my mom’s hands on me. “Get up, what is going on?” she asks me, her cheeks are red from embarrassment. “I don’t…I…what is going on!” I suddenly yell and the applause stops. “What are you doing? Now is not the time to draw attention to yourself,” my mom says beside me but at this point my wolf is in control and she wants answers. I walk up to the stage with my mom following behind me. “What is this, Ron?,” I ask and he gives me a cold smile. “What I should have done years ago, mate,” he spits out the word ‘mate’ like it is poison. “I am so sorry, Alpha,” my mom suddenly interrupts, “Whatever this is I’m sure we can resolve it easily, it’s Olive, your best friend and mate,” she gestures at me and Ron throws her a disgusted look. “I don’t have a mate,” his words hit me hard but I remain standing. “So, you really don’t want me,” I say slowly, “I waited for you for a whole year to finally acknowledge me.” “You waited in vain,” he shrugs before turning to face me fully, “I, Alpha Ron of Bluemoon pack, reject you Olive as my mate. I cut off all ties with you before the moon Goddess.” The reaction is immediate, I double over as a searing pain floods my chest. Staggering I fall to the ground as pain seems to crawl around my entire body, my vision blurs and my breath comes in my pants and I barely hear my mom calling my name. But almost immediately the pain starts to recede but not the tears, they are pouring out in torrents. “Get out of here!" The venom in his voice makes me shrink. I looked up at his red face, he felt the pain too. Then why do it?! The look of pity on the pack member’s face, and my father’s grief stricken one confirms the truth. Ron just rejected me. I’m not sure what sets me off first, the tight grip the woman has on Ron’s hand or the smug look she gives me. I just remember my bones snapping and launching myself at her. Something hits me on my left and I fall at their feet, just before everything goes dark, I see Dalton’s wolf growling at me.
