“Hey, Yelena! Is she awake yet?” I asked as soon as I got home from my night duty. Sophie decided to stay with me while waiting for Layla.
“Yes! She had just woken up and had taken her bath. She was out for fifteen straight hours!” Yelena answered while prepping the table. “Let me warm the food while you freshen up, then I will call her,” she added.
“Sweet! I’ve already taken a bath in the hospital,” I said, sitting on the couch after dropping my bag on the floor.
“Cool, just leave that stuff, and I will wash them later.”
“Thank you, Yelena. You’re the best!”
Yelena snorted. “I am the worst, according to your brother.”
I shook my head and chuckled. “Yes. I’ve heard about it. At least you left him cans of beers, though,” I said, remembering what Mom told me about Kyle’s alcohol stash from his pent. Yelena took them all, leaving just beers for my brother, who was still drowning his sorrow with alcohol.
“He will thank me later,” Yelena scoffed.
“Sure he will.” I agreed.
I let Yelena do her job while I fished out my phone and checked for some messages. There were a couple from our family’s group chat. Mom sent a video of Gideon and Dad as she hollered in the background.
Apparently, they brought the little boy to the park earlier and then went to a grocery store. Dad accidentally farted, and Gideon heard it. He embarrassed my dad by sniffing his rear end and loudly saying his nappy was full and Grandnana had to change it soon. Shoppers overheard what he said and laughed at them.
“Oh, Gideon…” I laughed as I watched her crying in happy tears. “Silly boy…”
“Are you okay?”
I looked up and wiped my tears as well. It was Sophie scowling at me. “Ohhhh…” I gasped, “Yes! Mom sent us this video! Oh, God…Dideon,” I said, shaking my head.
Sophie smiled at me and sat on the couch. “Can I see?”
“Sure! Sure!” I gave her my phone to let her watch and hear my mom narrate the funny tale.
I watched how her pale face turned red and changed. Sophie soon cracked up as she watched it, yet much to our surprise, I heard a cracking toot beside me. I gaped as I looked at Sophie, who looked flushed with her saucering dark eyes. “I just farted!” she embarrassingly announced before laughing out loud.
I hollered so much laughter this time that I rolled on the floor. I knew it was humiliating, but I couldn't stop laughing with her.
Sophie and I cackled until Yelena came back asking us what had happened. Sophie was ashamed, so I didn’t tell Yelena what happened and just showed her Gideon’s video.
Yelena laughed as well. “Oh, God! I almost farted from laughing,” she commented.
Like a comical stare, Sophie and I looked at each other before laughing once more. Sophie was wiping her tears when she stopped and held her tummy. “Goddamit!” she huffed before leaving us and running towards the bathroom.
We shared a great time later that night while eating our dinner. Sophie admitted she was gassy since she hadn’t eaten anything for hours. I understood it. As a doctor, I knew how our body works.
Sophie continued sharing her and Elisha’s lives with me. She even told me about the meeting with her grandma’s lawyer. I asked Sophie if she was worried about it. Sophie wasn't bothered at all since she knew her grandma well. She wasn't expecting a considerable amount of cash to be left for everyone. Her grandma owned some properties, and she guessed they would get perhaps one of their old houses in a small town in New Jersey.
“Such a wonderful night, Doc Sammy….” Sophie said as she stood in front of her bedroom door.
I looked at her and held her shoulders. “Indeed. Goodnight,” I smiled, kissing her forehead.
Sophie looked at me. “Goodnight,” she smiled back before opening her door.
The following day, Sophie met Layla, and the two talked about their troubles. I noticed the sadness in her eyes as soon as she returned to my place to take her stuff.
Layla and I sent her to the airport. I wasn't sure why, but I felt sad when Sophie left. I missed her bubbliness when she wasn't crying. I had only known her for days, yet she seemed like a close friend.

“Its lunch time, doc Samuel!” My colleague Dr. Janis said as she was leaving the on-call room. “Shall we go and eat before the surgery starts?” she added.
I smiled at her and shook my head. “Oh, no. I’ll stay for a while. I need to talk with my sister,” I answered.
“Gotcha, See you later!” Dr. Janis bade.
“See you,” I smiled, picking up my phone to video call Sam and message Sophie.
“Sammy!” Sam greeted me right away, beaming at me. “How is it going? I thought you were here in New York.”
“No, I left last night and went straight to my evening shift,” I answered, yawning as I rubbed the back of my neck. “I’m okay, though. A bit sleepy,” I added.
“I see. Just take it easy, lil bro,”
“Thanks. I am resting right now. I will be assisting a mini-surgery later, and I will go home right after.”
“Sweet. Do you have any news from Sophie? She hasn't answered my text this morning. I wanted to know how she was. I was too busy this week to check on her,” Sam said.
I smiled and nodded. Sophie and I have constantly been communicating since the day she left the city. I had to ask her and make sure she was alright. So far, we have had no news about Elisha’s case. It had been almost two weeks since everything started. “Yes. She seems okay. She mentioned earlier she would go to her part-time work,” I answered, taking a mental note to call her later.
“Awesome. I’m happy to know she’s doing well. Do you have any idea when she’s coming back?” Sam asked again.
“That I am not sure. She and her relatives met their grandma’s lawyer days ago. She quite mentioned about fixing the stuff they needed to do to finalize the properties they received from Mrs. Betty,” I answered.
Sophie shared with me the properties they got from the will. As she thought, they were given to her and her brother in New Jersey. It was pretty far from the capital city and would take a few hours' drive from our family’s mansion. Sophie also mentioned that it was almost dilapidated and just an old house in a small town.
“Okay. Please update me about her, okay? I have a proposal so she could stay closer to us in the city,” Sam said, “I thought about asking her to work with me in a law firm.”
My eyes gaped after hearing Sam’s words. “Ohh…you are right! Yes, she’s seeking a temporary job while finalizing her college application! Awesome, Sis!” I remarked in excitement.
Sophie mentioned she was still contemplating if she would follow her brother in California or stay in the meantime while waiting for the news about Elisha. I would love her to be closer to my family and me.
“Yes, don’t celebrate yet,” Sam chuckled.
I puckered my lips. “Yeah. She’s great company, honestly. I like her bubbliness,” I openly told my sister.
Sophie’s short stay in my place was great indeed. Though she slept all day, I still couldn’t forget the embarrassing incident I had with her.
“Hey, Sammy! Are you still there? You spaced out on me!”
My eyelids flickered as I looked at my phone screen. “Oh, I just remembered something,” I lied.
“Shush! Someone! I know it’s Sophie!” Sam wiggled her brows, teasing me.
I smirked and rolled my eyes. “Yeah, whatever. I've got to go, I’m gonna get some Chinese takeaway, and I’ll be back here soon. I’m running out of phone battery.” For some reason, my face felt warm.
“Fine. Talk to you later! Love you, lil bro!” Sam bade and hung up the call.
“Oh, Samantha,” I chuckled, taking my stuff. I plugged in my phone inside my locker before leaving the room to eat.
I was on my way outside the hospital when I saw an auburn-haired young lady about to cross the street. She stopped on the side while waiting for the streetlight to turn green. I narrowed my eyes and looked intently at her. For some reason, she seemed familiar to me. Her shiny red hair told me something.
I took big strides to catch and see her closer. The green light turned, yet as soon as she walked forward, she palmed her forehead, and her legs trembled. She was about to fall when I quickly caught her in my arms. “Miss….Are you okay?” I asked.
She then shook her head and uttered, “Hospital….” I guessed she had just left the hospital. I didn't waste any time, so I quickly scooped her and brought her back to the emergency room. Her face was pale, and her skin was cold and sweaty. The crease on her forehead told me she was conscious.
“We have a patient here,” I quickly informed the nurses inside the triage.
“What happened, doctor Sammy?” Asked one of the nurses.
“I don’t know, but I saw her outside looking pale and was about to drop on the ground,” I answered, stepping back as I let the on-duty nurses and doctor check on her.
“Okay, I'll take care of her. Thank you, doctor Sammy,”
They began assisting her. She seemed unconscious, but she wasn't. Her eyes were just closed, and I could see her eyeballs move.
“Oh, she’s here!”
I suddenly heard behind me. I looked at the nurses and listened to their conversation.
“Do you know her?”
“Yes, she was in OPD earlier under Doctor Sandy Parkinson. Is she alright?”
“We are still evaluating. She’s unconscious,”
The nurses continued their job, attaching the pressure cuff to the patient’s arm. Then she started checking her pulse rate and doing the standard ER assessment.
“Where did you find her, doctor Owens?”
The nurse suddenly asked me. “On the street. I was about to get my lunch when I noticed her about to pass out,” I answered.
A few seconds later, we heard the heart rate monitor beep loudly. The vitals said her heart was racing. I checked it, and it was beating normally, albeit fast, when I saw the screen.
“Oh, her heart rate is elevating,” announced one of the nurses.
“Let me check her,” I said, taking my stethoscope. I started checking her chest. It was thumping in rhythm. I took my little penlight, lightly lifted her eyelids, and shone a light into her eyes to check for pupil reflexes.
“How was it, doc?”
It was all normal, and as I knew, she was conscious indeed. “You said she’s from Doctor Parkinson, so it meant she’s pregnant….” I commented, staring at her pale yet beautiful face. I knew this lady. Doctor Sandy was an OB-Gyne specialist.
“You’re right, doc,” the nurse confirmed, touching the patient’s bump. She was wearing a baggy shirt, and I didn’t notice it immediately. “She’s pregnant.”
Now that I see her closer and her condition right now. My hunch seemed correct this time. ‘Elisha’
“Let’s call Doctor Parkinson to know the patient’s health condition,” I suggested, holding her wrist. It slightly twitched. “Check her oxygen level,” I said, looking at her. My guts were indeed correct.
It could be Elisha, and she was anxious.
“I will page her.”
“Yes, doc.”
My eyes never left her face. I felt her hand move shortly. Her fluttering eyelids slowly opened and gaped at us.
“Miss.. are you okay? How are you feeling?” I worriedly asked as she stared back at me.
“Y…yeah…yeah….” She simply answered, scooting up to sit on the gurney. The nurse quickly aided her.
“Let us check you once more,” I calmly said, evaluating her condition and asking her questions just to be extra sure she was okay. Elisha answered she was in her second trimester and carrying twins. Her face, her medical condition, and her demeanor were the same as what Sophie shared with me. She consciously touched her hair and rubbed her neck.
“I…I need…water….”
“Sure…”
I was left alone with her as Nurse Aly left to get her water. “Okay. You seem alright now,” I cleared my throat, hanging back my stethoscope on my neck. “May I know your name?” I smilingly asked.
“Elisha!”
I turned my head and looked at the person who called her. It was Doctor Sandy. “What happened, sweety?”
“Doc Sandy…”
There was no doubt in my mind anymore.
This young lady was Elisha.
