Sammy
“Oh, Lord…” I chuckled, head tipping as I looked at the ceiling. “That was close…” Had not Elisha interrupted us, probably Sophie and I would have fooled around again. I shook my head before looking at my naked lower extremities. “Sorry, boy. Better luck next time,” I spoke to my still-rigid manhood.
I got up and picked up my pants and boxers on the floor. Gladly, Elisha didn’t notice them, or else it would be awkward. I bet she was already getting suspicious about me and her friend. I wouldn’t mind hiding with Sophie. That indeed added to our excitement.
I put my pants on before returning to my table and studying my books. I was in the middle of checking all my notes when an email popped up on my screen. ‘Demi’
“Oh, Demi…” I huffed, opening the email. Demi sent me a short message with an attached folder.
‘Sammy, Raven sent me this folder. He got Jess’s laptop, and I have no idea why he’s doing this to us. Please help. We need to sort it out.
I quickly opened the files and checked all the items inside. “Oh, damn...” Many old photos and videos of me, Demi, and Jess. They were taken more than seven years ago. It was one of our trips to Taylor’s lake house. My family, together with the Taylors, went on a fishing trip.
“Jess…” I mumbled, staring at her photos. I can still vividly remember that day. We were all smiling and happy about our travels, yet this was also the day Jess broke the news about her pregnancy.
‘Dad will kill me…’
‘Jess! Stop! Please don’t say that! Your family loves you!’
‘No…Sammy. You don’t know our family enough…Demi. Please help me. If Dad doesn’t kill me, he will kill Raven! I love him! I can’t lose him…’
The look Demi gave me is still etched in my head. She loved her sister so much. Jess was set to have a promising future in modeling, like Demi. And she would help her no matter what. Demi did, and I was a part of it, but unfortunately, we lost Jess and her unborn baby.
‘Sammy?’
My eyelids flickered as I looked at the door. I saw Sam standing and snapping her fingers. “Sam…”
“You are spacing out,” Sam chuckled.
I snorted, “Is everything okay?” I asked, noticing her puffy red eyes and sniffling nose. “Please tell me you’re okay…”
Sam shook her head, “I am, but I need help. Kyle doesn’t look well. I will call Mom, too…:”
“What happened?”
“Max. But I will tell you later.”
“Okay…I will go to his room,” I agreed, standing up.
Mom, Sam, and I entered Kyle’s bedroom a little later. I was dumbfounded upon seeing fresh wounds on his battered, swollen face. He was shirtless on the bed, and the reddish and blue marks were evident on his skin and chest. “What happened?” I asked.
“Max beat him black and blue,” It was Sam.
Kyle grunted and winced. “I’m having a hard time breathing…” he said.
“Oh, son. Look what you have done to yourself, ” Mom shook her head before looking at me. “Assess him, Samuel…” she said, preparing her stuff.
“Lay flat on the bed,” I carefully examined Kyle’s bruised body. There were visible injuries on his ribcage, which was tender to touch. Kyle groaned and grumbled in pain as I asked him which part of his torso was sore. The discomfort and pain were all over his still-healing body. “Yes, I think he fractured his ribs,” I stated.
Mom nodded. “Call an ambulance. Let's have it checked in the hospital,” she calmly said, rechecking Kyle. “I hope this is the last, Skylar….” she added.
“Yes, Mom…” Kyle replied.
“Okay…” I picked up Kyle’s room phone and called 911 for the ambulance. After hanging up the call, my phone buzzed inside my pants.
“Samuel, do you have a shift tonight?” Mom asked.
“No, there are changes, but I will go there early in the morning,” I replied, fishing out my phone. It was Demi. I answered after excusing myself. “Hey…”
Demi’s sad and crying voice greeted me. “Sammy, you’re my only hope. I love you, and I will always do…”
“What’s the matter?” I scowled.
“Who is Sophia?”
Hearing Sophie's name left me stunned. How did Demi learn about her? I pondered. “Demi, she’s my friend. Why did you ask?” I calmly answered her question.
“Are you guys together?”
I heaved deeply out of frustration. My situation with Demi was getting to my wit's end. “That’s none of your business, Demi.”
“Sammy… I saw your photos with her…she told me you guys are dating!”
“Demi. We will talk soon. I shall go now. Tschuss!” I hung up the phone call, shaking my head. I didn’t believe it when she said Sophie told her about us. There would be no way Sophie would let Demi know about us. “Goddamnit…” I cursed in annoyance, heading into my room, only to find Sophie sneakily and nosily checking my laptop.
“What are you doing here?” I snappishly asked her. She didn’t answer after getting caught red-handed. I walked towards her to check what she was looking at. I couldn’t control my feelings upon seeing her snooping on my stuff. “The hell, Sophie? Why are you here and touching my things?”
“I…I was just…” Sophie was startled.
I looked at the screen. It was me and Demi. “Don’t you ever touch any of my stuff again,” I grumbled angrily. I wasn’t prepared to see those photos yet.“Now get out...”
“I’m sorry...” Sophie mumbled before leaving my bedroom.
As soon as she closed the door, I slumped on my swivel chair and palmed my face. I wondered what brought her here and why she was prying on my things. I looked at the screen again, contemplating.
“Oh, Sophie…” I somehow realized I was blunt with her and felt regretful about it. I thought about apologizing to her, but Demi’s name appeared on the screen again, so I turned my phone off and headed outside again to assist Mom and help Kyle.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. I spoke with the paramedics, informing them of the situation. Sam and Mom followed the ambulance to the hospital, and I headed back inside to rest. I went upstairs and thought about talking to Sophie. Sam mentioned that Elisha was in their room with Tom. The two were catching up while putting Gideon to sleep.
“Sophie…” I knocked on the door before opening it. I saw the lady sleeping soundly on the bed. I crept in and decided to check on her. It was cold and dim, and I could see how she curled like a ball inside her thick blanket. “I’m sorry,” I mumbled, brushing her hair. Her eyelids were wet, telling me she had cried after she left my room. “That’s what you get for being sneaky…” I kidded, feeling her warm forehead.
I realized that maybe she was in my room to finish our business, and I overreacted upon seeing her sneak into my things.
After kissing her temples goodnight, I left the room and headed to my own. I spent my night studying, ignoring Demi’s messages on my phone. Mom and Sam returned around midnight. Kyle indeed broke his ribs, and his injuries needed attention.
Mom and I left the mansion the following morning to check on Kyle. I had a series of surgeries to assist with and attend to, so I let Mom visit him first. Then, after four hours of non-stop work, I joined my family in Kyle’s room. Sam, Tom, Dad, and Gideon had just arrived.
“My-My!” Gideon happily greeted me in the hallway.
“My Dion! How are you, our lovely boy?” I asked, picking him up.
“Where my Daddy Ky?” Gideon asked me back.
“He’s inside. Would you like to see him?”
“Yes!”
“Otay! Let’s go!” I smiled at him as we walked to Kyle’s floor. “Hey, sissy, Tom! How are the ladies back home?” I asked, hoping they were okay.
Sam beamed back, “Oh, they just woke up before we left. They must be tired, especially Sophie! I hadn’t had time to thank her last night, but we caught up during breakfast,” she answered.
I sighed in relief. “Great to know!” I haven’t had a chance to message Sophie. And I hoped she wouldn’t think I hated her for snooping into my things. I made a mental note to message her later.
We all got inside Kyle’s hospital room. I let Gideon and Sam wake my brother up. We received information earlier that he had to stay another day to check his injuries thoroughly. Mom said he had a bad fever this morning.
“Wake up, Daddy Ky…wakey wakey….” Gideon sweetly woke up Kyle.
My brother quickly woke up and smiled at us. “Didion…Sam…Hey, guys. Hey Tom.”
“Hey, buddy. I hope you are okay now,” It was Tom. I hadn’t spoken with him, but he messaged me earlier, thanking me and looking forward to talking with me. He had already explained to Sam what I had done.
“I feel better seeing this boy. Thank you for bringing my happy pill. Thanks for visiting me, Sam,” Kyle replied.
“He’s been asking you since he woke up this morning,” Sam snorted, brushing Gideon’s hair.
“Sweet boy. How’s Elisha?”
“She’s okay. We spoke to her before we left, and she’s resting at home with Sophie,” Sam calmly answered.
“Isha?” Gideon chimed in.
“Yes, Isha…”
“Daddy Ky, are you owtay?”
“Oh, buddy…Yes,”
“Hug, daddy Ky…” Gideon said. I looked at Sam and shook my head. That would be a bad idea, especially when Gideon loved straddling over Kyle.
“No, baby… daddy is sick. Here… did you see that?” Sam pointed at Kyle’s chest, wrapped with a compression band
“Oi… daddy…” Gideon puckered and gave him a peck on his head and lips, “You owtay now?”
My heart melted when I saw Gideon do it with Kyle. “I am much better now, buddy….” my brother smiled.
“How are you, son?” Dad asked.
“Well, a bit rough around the edges, but I’m okay, Dad,”
“Good.”
I cleared my throat, glancing at Mom as I looked at Kyle’s laboratory results. “They are keeping you until tomorrow. It has something to do with lab results.” I stated, breaking the news.
“No way,” Kyle grumbled.
I expected his reaction, but his blood work didn’t look well. He needed to heal and rest.
Mom nodded. “You had a high fever earlier. Your blood test is not quite normal, so the doctors want you for MRI and other series of tests to be extra sure,” she explained.
“But I feel better now. I don’t feel feverish,” Kyle replied.
“Kyle, son. Listen to your mom and your brother,” Dad butted before looking at me. He also knew my brother’s stubbornness, and I needed to watch him out.
“Fine….” Kyle finally yielded.
“Don’t worry, Kyle. I’ll check on you. I’ll speak with your doctors and see if we can manage the recovery and therapy at home,” I assured him.
“Thanks, Sammy…Mom…” Kyle nodded.
Mom and I left the room when Kyle’s doctors came for rounds. I hoped my stubborn brother would listen to them.
“Samuel,” Mom called my attention as we walked to the call room.
“Yes?”
Mom looked at me and smiled. “I know it's not my business, but I just want to ask you something personal, my love,”
“Fire away, Mom,” I smiled at her.
“Are you and Sophie dating?”
I was taken aback and didn’t know what to say. “Oh, no, Mom…we are just friends,” I vaguely said.
Mom snorted. “It must be an extraordinary friendship,” She winked at me.
“Mom...” I stopped walking and stared at her.
Mom chuckled as she stared back at me. “Oh, I’m your mom. Your dad and I started as friends. Very special friends because we couldn't commit yet back then,” she said. “I don’t mind, though. I love Sophie, and I like her. She’s the sweetest and loveliest, like Elisha.”
I smirked, then nodded. “Yes, but we both agreed on this friendship, Mom. She’s indeed a special one…”
“And Demi?”
“I will speak to her soon.”
“I hear you..” Mom smiled, holding my hand, “Anyway, I’ll see you later. Enjoy your day,” she added, leaving me to her clinic.
I continued with my day. I focused on my work and attended the surgery after the surgery for the following hours. It was already noon when I finished my last minor ones.
I was walking out of the operating theater with my colleagues when I saw a familiar figure in my peripheral vision. I thought it was Sophie, but the elevator door had already closed before I could take a second look. I shrugged my thoughts away and went to eat my lunch.
I thought about sending Sophie a message, but unfortunately, my phone ran out of battery. My stuff was in my car, so I decided to take it. I left the doctor’s room and was greeted by a loud commotion in the lobby.
I was shell-shocked to see who the people were involved in the unrest. Sophie was with an unfamiliar lady. The latter was being pinned on the floor by the hospital staff.
“Call the police! Don’t let her go!” Sophie yelled, then angrily smacked the lady's face before growling at her like an angry lion. “You m*therfucker! You’re going to pay for this! If something bad happens to Elisha and her babies, I will kill you!”
The young lady was so livid that she attempted to slap her again, but I quickly stopped her. “Sophie…enough…” I tugged and hugged her.
Sophie’s bright, wide eyes glared back at me with disbelief. The shock was written on her face. “Sammy!? Sammy!” Just like that, she wept and folded in my arms, far from the enraged person she was a few seconds ago.
