Chapter 31- Two Women

Sammy “Oh, my back... I sat on my swivel chair and puffed as I rubbed my aching back. Sophie and Elisha just left for their weekend getaway and will return tomorrow. “Sophie,” I mumbled, seeing her name pop on my screen. We had another eventful night yesterday. I would admit that I craved and desired the lovely lady every moment of the day. I was happy with our decision to enjoy the moment and seize the time together. With my career status, I realized that it was for the best. As Sophie said, she was still young, and so was I. I had just started in my chosen profession. Soon, I would finally achieve my dream and practice the career I’d always wanted. Sophie wasn’t a distraction, but somehow she inspired me to push through and enjoy my busy life. The simple company she offered entertained my monotonous life. ‘You little naughty doctor! I hate you!’ I burst out laughing after reading Sophie’s message. I was unaware that I had given her love bites on her skin. Elisha probably noticed it, but since Sophie hadn’t come out clean yet, she said the mosquito bit her. ‘Not happening again on your thighs. Maybe I need to hide them further. I miss your sweetness and moans already. Xx, ’ I quickly replied, still smiling. Sophie seemed like a drug. I had never felt it with the other women I slept with. ‘Stop!’ ‘Just kidding! See you and enjoy your girls' day out!’ ‘Thanks! Take a rest and see you later,’ “Oh, Sophie. You are such a character,” I beamed, opening the book I was reading and reviewing. I was about to start when my phone buzzed. “Samantha…” ‘Hey, my favorite brother. Please call me once you are up and ready. Everything is okay, though. I just needed your advice. Love you.’ I couldn’t help but smile after hearing Sam’s voice message. I knew my sister was in trouble. It wasn’t bad, but something happened last night at the party they attended in Florida. I closed the book and quickly called her back to make sure she was okay. She had been quiet lately, which I found alarming. Though I knew Kyle would always be there for her, there were things Sam couldn’t open up about with Kyle. I already knew the whole story of her trouble with Thomas and how the man mistakenly believed my sister cheated on him. I wasn’t just sure if Thomas was aware of it. There was a big misunderstanding the two had to discuss for the sake of the little boy they brought into this world. “Samuel!” Sam greeted me immediately, answering the video call. “Thank God you’re up!” Her eyes were puffy and swollen, and her nose was red, though her face was pale. “You okay?!” I alarmingly asked. She seemed to be on the balcony, holding a glass of wine. “Wine? This early? Where's Gideon? Are you with Kyle?” I bombarded her with questions. “Chill!” Sam laughed back, “Gideon is with Kyle. They are eating their breakfast. I just had my coffee, and this is only my second glass,” she added, hiccupping and sniffling. I shook my head and heaved deeply, “Cut to the chase. Tell me exactly what Lis did last night,” I seriously said. Sam laughed once more, and then it turned to sobbing. “That b***h. She had the audacity to call and treat me as her friend and family when she f*cking backstabbed me from the start!” Her jaws clenched, veins throbbing in her neck, while she ran her hands through her hair. “Calm down, Sam.” I sternly reminded her. “Lisbet let everyone know that Gideon was mine. But don’t get me wrong. I am proud to let the world know that Gideon is mine. But I don’t think I can take the hatred Thomas will have for me once he finds out about our son! I still love him. Being despised by the person I love is the worst feeling ever!” “Samantha…” I felt pity and sadness for my sister. I wished I could hug and comfort her. “Lis did me dirty, Sammy. I can’t f*cking forgive her. I hate her with all my guts, bro. So f*cking bad!” Samantha bawled her eyes out. “Oh, Sam…I’m really sorry, my love. Have you told Kyle?” My heart sank into my stomach. I wished I could do something to make her feel better. Sam nodded. “Yes, every single thing! Everything I didn’t tell him and kept in my heart!” “You need to speak with Thomas, Sam... This will clear up every mess Lis made in your life,” All I could say. My sister was taking a while to reveal and tell Tom that they had a kid, and she didn’t cheat on him. Samantha also knew that Thomas's drastic decision to hurt her was because of the lies Lisbet told and showed him. Sam had to take the lid off and be honest with Thomas. My sister was one of the best and fiercest lawyers in the city, practicing in different cities. Still, she was too cowardly to inform Thomas that they had been manipulated and lied to by the people they trusted. Lisbet was Samantha’s friend and Kyle’s former secretary and ex-fiancé. “I don’t know where to start.” “You know it. You are a freaking smart lady. The best in towns, cities, and states. Even in Europe. You know what to do…” “You don’t understand me, Samuel... I am not… You haven’t been in my shoes, my dear brother… Deciding while being brokenhearted is difficult, Sammy.” I quickly agreed that Sam was indeed correct. I had faced troubles, but not anything about love or being broken. “Oh, Samantha…I’m sorry, my love. I wished I could help you and ease the burdens in your heart.” Sam chuckled, waving her hand. “Nah, don’t feel sorry. I chose this path,” she said before sipping and finishing her glass of wine all the way down. “And I am thankful you guys are still keeping up with my stubbornness.” “That’s why you are hurting.” “Stupid, isn’t it?” I narrowed my eyes and slowly nodded. “A little.” Sam snickered, wiping her tears. “I could win hundreds of cases or defend the most difficult cases in court, but I couldn’t even handle my own case of love,” she added, making me laugh. “Ha-ha!” I snorted to lighten up the mood. There was silence. I saw Sam fix her eyes on the horizon. She inhaled deeply, seemingly contemplating while staring blankly at the open sea. “I guess there’s one more thing I need to do before talking to Tom,” she finally uttered. “Care to share?” “Max is here. I needed to clarify something. I needed to hear straight from him what happened that night. I have always believed nothing had happened between us that night.” “Awesome. Yes, I believe it’s the right thing.” “I have my full trust in him even though he is the most badass, assh*le, manwh*re, and playboy I have ever known,” Sam paused to breathe, “I haven’t had a chance to talk to him and explain everything that transpired. Max is the sweetest guy next to Tom. He is my best friend. I considered being the one that got away.” “Do what you think will help your sanity. I can’t afford to see you broken and depressed, my favorite sister. Whatever you do, it's for Gideon,” I advised, giving the advice I knew was right. “I will, my favorite brother. I will…” Sam nodded, smiling at me. For a moment, I saw how her gloomy face seemed to get brighter again. “Cheer up! Think about Gideon. Worst comes to worst. You have him even if the whole world will hate you.” Sam smiled and nodded. “I wish Tom would know that I will always love him. I hated him, but deep in my heart, I loved him. He was the last person on my mind when I thought I would die in that hospital bed. When I thought Gideon wouldn’t make it, when I ran away from the hospital, blaming myself for why our son was in such a delicate condition. He’s always here in my heart and mind. Always.” she stated without tears in her eyes. “I promised to love him. Only him.” “I hear you,” I sighed in relief. Samantha truly loved Thomas, even if he was also the reason she almost lost her mind. Sam sniffled, “You already know the feeling of being in love and feeling loved. You and Demi were young then, but I saw the love and adoration in your eyes, Sammy….” She stated. “Do you still love her?” Sam’s simple question took me by surprise. I didn’t know where it would lead now that the topic had been changed. “I don’t know…” I honestly answered her. “Find the answer quickly, Samuel. You may not admit it, but Sophie needs someone she can rely on and trust.” Samantha remarked with seriousness in her tone. “Samantha…” I went speechless. Sam seemed to have a hunch about what had been transpiring between me and Sophie. “The Taylors are returning soon. I know you promised Demi, but you are not obligated to fulfill it unless you want it.” I scoffed, resting my back against my swivel chair. Sam was right. I wasn’t obliged to keep the promises I made years ago. “I don’t want to think about it, Sam. In fact, I am not yet ready to deal with it.” I wasn’t keen to face Demi now that I had Sophie. It would complicate things. Sam nodded, “I got you, just don’t break the young girl's life. Enough that Kyle has already ruined Elisha’s plans in life,” she replied. I wondered where Sam got the idea about Sophie and me, but I trusted her instincts. “Oh, Sam. Sophie and I agreed with this and knew what we were getting ourselves into. And I would appreciate it if you kept this between us,” I earnestly asked. Sam smiled. “Of course, Samuel. I love Sophie, and she is the sweetest and loveliest, like Elisha.” “I believed you, Sam,” The intimacy and friendship between Sophie and me were exceptional. Sam and I dropped the topic of my whirlwind connection with Sophie. I fully received her sisterly advice and told her I’d be willing to face Demi if she ever returned. I had to balance my feelings and thoughts between the two women in my life. Sam and I continued chatting until Almira knocked on her door and told her that Gideon was looking for her. I reminded her about the swimming lessons I wanted the little boy to join to help him with his breathing and lungs. I spent the remaining hours studying before preparing for another long hour of duty in the hospital. I was waiting for the nurses to call me for rounds when I thought about Sophie. I quickly took out my phone and typed a silly message. ‘Hey, sweety… I know you had a hectic day with your friends. I want to let you know that I always care for you. I love our friendship and our closeness. Anyway, I hope the topical cream helped with your mosquito bites. LOL. Good night. Mosquito xx’ “Are you okay, Doc Sammy?” “You seemed happy and in love!” “Oh, he’s busy on his phone! He’s blushing! My eyelids fluttered as I looked at nurses and doctors smiling at me. “Yes, I’m ready!” I embarrassingly answered, not realizing I was smiling and almost giggling while on the phone. “Let’s go!” I stood up and started my night. The whole night went by. The hospital’s emergency unit was busy as usual. I was swamped with tending to patients, talking to their loved ones, and giving orders to the nurses. As soon as my shift ended, I fished out my phone to check for any messages. There were a couple of conversations and videos between Sam and my parents. It somehow relaxed me, especially seeing Gideon enjoying the water. I was busy watching the videos when my phone suddenly buzzed. Another unlisted number, but I was familiar with where it was coming from. “Caller from France...” I murmured before answering it. “Bonjour! Qui est cette personne?” “C'est moi, Thomas,” “Thomas…” “Oui, j'ai besoin que vous répondiez à quelques questions.” I hadn’t recovered from my astonishment when he addressed me as though I was being cross-examined in court. xx
