L O L A ' S P. O. V
I saw him again last night. Expect this time it wasn't in the depths of my terror struck nightmares, it was in my dreams.
The fragment of hopeless false reality that rarely visited me. I remembered it so vividly now.
The summer filled meadow that was filled with plethora of daisies and lilies.
The birds sang overhead, whistling their merry time, whilst the river quietly raged in its undisturbed rush. I lay on the fresh green grass, the scent of mint tinged within the deep flowery mess.
He hovered over me as I gazed at the goddess herself, up above. A flower tucked gravely behind his ear, the softest of smile illuminating bright on his face. Then he murmured it. Those three words that I had longed to hear from my mate forever.
"I love you." As he sealed his promise with a kiss, I heard the sound of the final piece fall into place and my life was complete.
If only. I stared at my red rimmed eyes in the bathroom mirror. Breaking up with Adam, the aftermath, it had all hit me harder than expected.
I couldn't go down like his. My parents would know something was wrong in an instant and although my cuts from yesterday had healed overnight, the fear, the panic, still lingered beneath my cheery facade.
"Come on. You can do this." With that sprinkle of emotional praise, I left my room, only to smack face first into a hard bare chest. Again.
"Do you just wait until I'm leaving my room ?" Lucien's smug grin curled up even wider and he crossed his arms over his chest, causing his bulging muscles to seem even bigger.
Holy s**t. Licking my lips, I quickly glanced away. He laughed deeply, and my cheeks flamed red in response.
I felt him lean in closer, gently push away my hair and lower his mouth to my ear. "How are you going to handle seeing me actually naked?"
I recoiled and choked out a laugh. "Well, unlucky for you but that won't be happening anytime soon."
He winked. "We'll see." And left me gaping openly on the corridor as he walked away, whistling a merry tune.
"Lola!" I recovered quickly, sensing the fear tinged in Sabine's voice.
"What's happened? Are you okay?" She rushed over and gripped my hands. The look she wore was so familiar to me now. It was the kind of the look people gave you when they didn't want to tell you the bad news they had.
"I'm fine, your parents are fine and your brothers, it's..." Her eyes trailed away from me as she gazed off into the distance. Nostrils flaring, at the new scent to arrive, and her eyes drew dangerously dark.
"Mate." I heard a low growl echo from the end of the corridor.
"Mate." Sabine murmured softly, and she walked past me as though I was a ghost, drifting closer and closer towards the shadow that lingered in the dark.
As he stepped into the light, I noticed the ruffle of his dark blonde hair, the piercing nature of his green eyes and recognised him also immediately. Tripp. Lucien's beta.
A door clicked open in the background. "Did I just hear..."
"Shh." Lucien stilled, startled and gazed at me in open awe.
"What's..."
"Look." I whispered, afraid to break the delicate balance of the moment. He drifted besides me, so close I could feel his body heat radiating off his body.
"They're mates." I nodded aimlessly.
Sabine reached for him first, and he appeared dazed, staring at her hand as though it was alien. Then suddenly, he gripped it, tugged her in close and smashed his lips against hers.
The satisfying growl in his chest, merged with her heavy moans, was enough to know they accepted the bond.
Besides me, Lucien's own breathing began to get heavier. I could feel his fingers causally getting closer to mine. My breath quickened as well, becoming drawn to undeniable pull that lasted between us. I let my eyes fall shut and surrender to the hope of his touch.
"Sabine!" The heavy thunderous roar caused all of us to pull away. My mother stormed furiously down the hallway. "I told you inform Lola of what was going on, not make out with King Lucien's beta."
"He's my mate!" She implored, as if it was the only thing that made sense in this world. Immediately, my mothers expression softened.
I saw the sappy love struck look in Sabine's eyes that I had never seen before.
Was it wrong I didn't look at Lucien like that yet? Would I ever?
"I'm happy for you Sabine, but that doesn't change what is happening."
"And what's happening?" I interjected, finally tearing my eyes away from the new found couple. My mother sighed wearily and gave me that same look.
"It's Adam. He's missing, and no-one can find him. His father thinks...he's left the pack."
"What?" In my haste, I stumbled forward, only to be caught by Lucien. I glanced up at him, and he held my stare for a moment before letting go.
"Did something happen concerning the two of you?" She glanced between Lucien and I warily.
"No...actually yes. I...we...we broke up. He didn't take it very well and he shifted, then ran off. I assumed he was just letting off some steam or something but...he wouldn't leave, would he?"
"He knows better than that. I hope. Your father is sending out search parties and with all the recent hunters in the area, I pray he didn't leave."
"I'll help look." I stared up at Lucien's towering form in gaping awe.
"You will?"
He flashed me a small smile. "Of course. He's your friend, and we can look together."
My mum clapped her hands enthusiastically. I guess she was rooting for us. "That sounds like a great idea. You two head out now and I'll call you if we find anything."
She practically shoved us downstairs and out the door. My stomach growled in an angry and loud fashion. "I really wanted breakfast." I mumbled, whilst Lucien laughed at me.
"I can't tell." Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a granola bar. "Here. Being an alpha wolf, I tend to get very hungry."
"Will you not need it?" He pressed it into my hand.
"I had two pints of blood after my workout."
Right. "Well thanks Lucien."
We began to walk down towards the woods. "I thought you were going to call me Luca now?"
Taking a big bite of the bar, I answered him with a stuffed mouth. "You said everyone calls you Luca?"
"So?"
"So, I don't want to be like everyone and I like Lucien better." He snorted out a laugh and nudged my shoulder. I smiled at him cheekily, and steered him towards the lake.
"I took Adam here when we first met to study. Then it sorta just stuck. This is the first place he would have gone".
As suspected, there was nothing but heavy paw prints embedded into the dirt. "You were right. He was here."
"But not now." I murmured. Where else could he have gone?
"Hey," Lucien placed his hand in my shoulder. "Are you okay?"
"This is my fault."
He shook his head adamantly. "No it isn't. He's a big boy, he can take care of himself."
"I should have been more careful, I shouldn't have agreed to go out with him when I knew there was a chance of him finding a mate one day."
"But not you?" s**t. Should I tell him yet?
No, we'd hardly known each other for three days. It was way too soon.
"I never thought about it really. Never knew if I would, but Adam definitely believed in the bond. He tried to convince me that we were mates and I liked him a lot, so if it wasn't for my mother telling me what it's supposed to feel like, then I probably would have believed him."
I stared at the muddy ground. He placed his finger under my chin and gently pushed my chin up.
"Lola, you can feel it now, right? The electric spark, the rage of hormones flooding through your body, the undeniable pull." He leant in closer, his eyes dropping down to my lips. "Because I do. I feel everything and more. I don't think I've ever wanted something so bad in my entire life."
I felt my breasts heaving with every quicken breath I took. f**k, I wanted him. Unlike anything I've ever wanted before. And he was right here. This wasn't a dream, wasn't a fairytale, this was my life.
Nodding, I stretched up on my tiptoes. "I want you too." Then let my eyes fall shut for the anticipated descent.
A feral growl suddenly ripped through the air. Lucien had me behind him in a heartbeat, and I peered warily over his shoulders, feeling his hands clasp tight around my waist.
The ash brown wolf stood high on the cliff top overlooking the lake. It's eyes zeroed in on Lucien's hands sat on my waist and he crouched in an attack position, before leaping for us.
I would recognise that wolf anywhere. From the fur, to the same look of rage in his eyes as Adam's yesterday.
Everything happened so fast. In a blur, Lucien was gone, using his supernatural speed to meet Adam halfway. They clashed with a brutal thud mid air, and their bodies fell down, smacking hard against the ground.
I debated who to run over to first, my friend or my mate. My brain told me one thing and my heart was telling me another.
Finally deciding, I stepped forward. Luca stilled, his back turning rigid, and slowly he turned his head to face me. Fangs elongated and eyes bleeding red, he viciously snapped at me. "Stay back!"
He was using his powers of submission. Every high ranking alpha could, but I was his mate. His equal in every way. We were same damn rank.
Adam shook himself off from the dirt and lunged forward again, jaws snapping savagely. I felt my heart thud hard within my chest, as Lucien bared his claws out for him and urged him on.
"Let's fight mutt." That insult severed any lasting restraint and Adam attacked like if never seen him before.
Lucien was ready, and grabbed his body, swinging him around throwing him against the boulders. Adam slammed into them, a cracking noise slicing through the air.
I noticed the pain shining in his eyes and the large cut that wrecked through his back. As Adam lunged for him again, I ran forward.
These two idiots were going to kill each other.
Adam's paws skirted along the ground when he saw me coming, stopping barely metres before me. "Lola get back."
"No!" I snapped at my mate behind him. His eyes gleamed dangerously but I didn't care. No-one was dying because of me. It was stupid.
"Adam," I whispered gently, appealing to the boy and not the beast. "It's okay to be hurt and scared. I'm scared too, but what you're doing isn't right. Everyone is worried about you, they care, they love you. I love you. Please, come back to me and be my friend."
I ignored the resounding snarl behind me and reached out my hand without conviction. He stared at it warily, assessing, hesitating. Then he reached out his paw, and I practically feel the warmth radiating off his fur, when a twig snapped behind us.
Quickly, I turned around and found Lucien staring at me guilty. A broken branch lay beneath his feet. A simmering rage filled the air and I pleaded Adam with my eyes as I saw his anger rise slowly.
"Adam don't...Adam please...no." He swiped at me with his paw. I flew sidewards into a hard oak tree that shook at the force.
Pain splintered through my ribs, and I felt the warm trickle of blood seep from my head. I faced myself into my hands and faced Lucien. His eyes followed the trail of blood down my cheek and he let out a feral growl.
"You f*****g bastard." And that was it. A flash of fur, and teeth, and claws before all I saw was red. He'd torn into Adam's stomach. The cut was deep and ragged that was sure to leave a nasty scar.
I noted the look of surrender in Adam's eyes, and Lucien would only kill him then. He would show no mercy.
"Lucien please," His raw eyes met my own. The red dimmed slowly. "Please don't." Then they softened entirely, shifting back to the amber hues I had become all too familiar with and he sighed, leaving Adam on the floor.
Within a few seconds, Adam scrambled up from the floor and ran back into the woods. His painful howls followed.
I sighed in relief, then let myself slump down to the floor. "I've got you." I was swept up into a warm chest, and I felt my eyes slowly droop close. "I've got you." The soft lullaby murmured and I felt the flutter of a kiss press tentatively against my cheek.
