Present
Christian stood soaking in the sunlight outside the college where he knew Candice studied, leaning against his car.
He had planned everything, every angle. The long, long.. wait of ten years had finally payed out.
It was time to get the plan in action.
He saw a nineteen years old girl coming out through the gates of college. Dressed in a plain blue, cotton sundress, with her dark brown, straight hair falling on her waist.
He immediately recognised his target.
The girl with eyes as dark as her hair, dragged her gaze through the busy field that was filled with more students. Maybe searching for someone.
Suddenly that searching gaze stopped at someone and a slow, pretty smile took place on her lips.
His gaze found the subject of her attraction when he saw a man in probably the same age as her, wearing faded jeans and dark brown shirt, walking toward her.
The difference between the quality of their clothes were glaringly clear.
While the girl was wearing clothes that could be brought at any average clothing stores. The boy was oozing wealth and class even from the way his walk. His clothes on the other hand, were of obviously top quality brand.
He also had a smile plastered on his lips.
"You riding with me today?", the man asked as he looked down on her.
To anyone else it would have been impossible to hear them from where Christian was standing, but with his enhanced hearing, for him it was like they were standing right next to him.
"I would have loved to, Keane.", she said softly as she started walking with him toward the main gate. "But I need to buy a new bag. I'm going mall first, then I may take a cab for home."
Keane looked down at her. Even though she was 5.4, her head barely came above his shoulder.
He also noticed the bruise and deep scraches of nails that were covering her wrist and the books in her hands that were torn at the corners a little.
"Ella! Again?", Keane asked as he grabbed her abused hand in his own softly, but with anger in his voice.
She gave him a look that conveyed it was not a question that needed to be answered.
Keane humphed aloud in anger and looked away. They were best friends since childhood, he knew what that look meant. But it certainly wasn't enough to calm his anger.
"Come on, I'm taking you to mall. And then home.", Keane said with a finality in his voice. Ella made a sound of denial but a shake of his head indicated he was too angry right then to argue with her.
They had reached the main gates of the college. When they walked toward Keane's car, Ella's eyes collided with the man leaning against a BMW, staring right at them.
Her reaction was instant. Attraction, a strong pull that stopped her from removing her gaze from his piercing blue eyes for a few seconds, that was what it probably was. That is what she told herself in her heart, but it was much stronger feeling than mere attraction. She did not know what, but whatever it was, she was damn sure that in that moment, she wanted to kiss that man like her soul depended on the task.
"Get in.", Keane said as he climbed inside the driver seat of his Porche. And his voice was the only thing that reminded her of her surroundings and her shameless gawky eyes.
Instantly embarrassed, Ella looked away and pulled the falling traces of her hair behind her ear in nervousness while hurrying to get inside the car.
As soon as she was in, they drove away from the parking lot. Christian's eyes followed the car as it drove past him.
The girl was pretty, he could not deny that. And he knew what impact his presence had left upon her, the emotions were clear as day on her face.
But her innocence wasn't gonna stop him from executing his plan.
Christian too got inside his BMW and started following them. After a few minutes he could see their car driving ahead of him.
"Oh, crap.", Ella mumbled in a scared tone.
Keane's eyes rose up in a questioning gesture at her sudden change of mood.
"My purse.", Ella replied as she tried to find it again in her small side bag. "I probably left it on my bed this morning. All my money is in there."
"I have my purse.", Keane said as he put one of his hand on her's in a soothing gesture. "We can get a bag for you, don't worry."
"Keane," her panicked voice alarmed him at once, "all the money that I have earned from doing freelance work is in there along with my bank details."
Suddenly the reason of her panicked state clicked into Keane's head. He nodded at her and started driving toward her home.
Christian was confused. He knew everything about both of them, but the reason for Ella's sudden panic over leaving her purse at her own home did not make sense to him.
After driving for fifteen minutes, they came to a stop outside a one story house.
Christian stopped his car a few feet away from their view. He could see them clearly but they could not see him.
Just as the car came to a stop, Ella hurriedly got out of the car and started walking toward the main door.
But before she could cross half the distance between the car and main door, a woman in her early forties, looking like a simple, everyday housewife, got out, and started storming toward Ella.
"Mom.", Ella whispered under her breath.
The woman didn't stop. She crossed the distance between herself and Ella in no time at all, she grabbed Ella by her hair, and slapped her across the face so hard that she fell down on her knees from the impact.
