12 The position gave me a good view of the room. The dark wall panels were illuminated by the candelabras that hung on either side of the door and the vanity mirror. Their soft light cast deep shadows over the two portraits that hung on the wall opposite the foot of the bed, deepening the skill of the artist by adding depth to the paint. The portraits were that of a man and woman, but time had taken its toll so that beyond the dress and suit the details weren’t clear, particularly their faces.
