Too Easy?

Knock! Knock! Change knocked patiently for the 9th time, 'if no one answers the door after my tenth knock, I'm going in' Change stared at the address in her hand, she knew she was at the right place, she had asked for directions and everybody knew where the owners of the Bar lived. The owners are a couple, their business had started small. It was just a stall by the road where the husband made and sold alcohol while the wife sold food alongside. Their little stall soon became known to everyone as the husband's alcohol was one of the best. They soon started having more customers till they realized the stall wasn't big enough anymore. So they bought land and began building. There are rumors that ever since the husband started mingling with politicians and getting richer, his attitude changed, even to his wife. He loved money more than anything in the world and would often sometimes beat his wife if she touched his share of the money. The wife never confirmed these rumored though, not many people had seen what she looked like since the bigger bar was built but, the owner never stopped talking about his wife and how much he loved her. 'If he loved her so much and could talk about her to just anybody, why would he hit her?' After listening to what the kids on the road had to say, she gave them a few gold coins and sent them on their way. Ignoring the over surprised reactions on their faces when they realized it was real gold. 'The rumors the children spoke about might not be true...there's only one way to find out then' Change picked the lock and opened the door as quietly as she could, the door was locked from the inside, she was sure of it. She stepped into the house and looked around, it didn't look like the house of a money hungry or rich person, she thought. Both the furnishes and the designs were not all luxurious and expensive, the house felt homey and quiet and as much as Change didn't want to judge the couple by the interior of the house, she couldn't help but feel that those rumors were wrong about the man....but he still pulled out the gun. "Hello?" "Who are you?! How did you get in here?!!" Change got an immediate answer, it was a female's voice. She sounded urgent and panicked.... She was afraid. "I am Change McCall, I'm a detective-" "No! He didn't do it!! He didn't do it I swear!!" The woman quickly rushed out from behind the wall she was hiding. Change heard the sounds of hooves behind her, she turned around to look at the wife. Tall....as usual, she was pretty, she seemed to have age well but her eyes were red and puffy like she'd been crying for a long while. "Are you talking about your husband?" She nodded, the fear was evident in her eyes, either she was scared of the husband of scared that he would be sent to jail. "He...he..he-" "Calm down" Change signaled for the woman to sit "I'm just here to ask a few questions, is your husband in" Change asked trying to sound as soothing as possible. Seeing the wife nod slowly, her brows raised. The other police men said they couldn't find the owner, did they even search?....they probably came here frightening to wife which was why she kept her mouth shut. "He...didn't do it" Change nodded "I'm guessing you know why I'm here so I will just go straight to the point. You say your husband is in....can I talk to him" The wife shook her head "He's too afraid to come out right now...I will explain, I will explain everything" Change saw that the woman was adamant and wasn't going to let her question the husband, she decided to listen to her instead. "He had pulled out the gun at the Fae, that was what he told me. He only used it to threaten him though, my husband doesn't even know how to use a gun. It's just that Gorrah has been owing us money for so long and my husband has been letting it go....the Fae's father is a politician and it turns out he is rich enough to pay us but he still refused to. My husband he....he just wanted to scare him a bit...then the gun...the gun-" "-It shot by itself" The husband said as he finally came out of his hiding spot. Change observed the Centaur's face, it look so worn out and haggard, it looked like he hadn't slept in days. "What do you mean it went off by it self?" Change asked the man not believing his story 'How could a gun go off by itself' Change began to feel like the Centaur was looking down on her...did he think she was an i***t? "I...I tried to stop the bullets from killing him so I aimed it at his shoulder but...it shot thrice!!" At this point, Change felt that she was about to have a headache, the looked at the centaur's eyes....the way he was speaking, it was like he practiced it. Every tremble of his voice, every shiver....she couldn't help but feel that it was fake, here he was talking about the supernatural... Was the gun haunted? Change forced down her laughter and looked seriously at the man "Did you intentionally leave Gorrah to bleed to death after shooting him?" "Marco didn't do anything!" The wife quickly denied, there was real fear in her eyes, 'she seems to have fallen for her husband's lies' Change thought to herself. "So what your saying is, you gun has a mind of its own and it decided to shoot a Fae?" Marco shook his head "After I....the gun shot him, he was still alive...there was something, something behind him" Change sighed and tried to stop herself from shutting the man up with her fists. "What was behind him?" "It was like a shadow..." 'When I said I hated handling this cas, he was all about justice this, justice that. Now I'm talking to a man who thinks he's talking to an i***t whose wife is also an i***t' Change massaged her aching temples and then put on a serious expression "You're going to have to come with me to the station sir, you should probably be giving this statement at the station" "You don't believe me do you?....I also wouldn't believe if I were you but...that shadow...it was scary, filled with evil intent, I could feel it" For a second, Change felt like she saw sincerity in his eyes but it was gone as soon as it came. ..... Change stared at the centaur who was currently behind bars consoling his crying wife who was in front of it and sighed. Why were they trying to make her seem like a bad person?. "My husband wouldn't even hurt a fly" The wife came next to her with red and puffy eyes, she had a bitter smile on her face "I believe him...he doesn't lie, you claim to be a detective, a person who protects the civilians yet!-" "I believe I did my job miss Nnenna, I am a detective, my job is to investigate and bring justice and your husband wouldn't have been in this predicament if he had either turned himself in or...come up with a better lie" the no hint of emotion in her tone. She didn't really care what she or anybody thought about her really....she only presented the evidence to the authorities, Marcos didn't really help matters as he still gave them thesame story he gave both his wife and Change. "He did something wrong and he has to pay for his crimes" Change said finally before walking away. She didn't have time to console or comfort the crying centaur, he had dug up his grave so he should lie in it.
