As I sank deeper into the warm, fragrant bathwater, I found myself absentmindedly toying with the jade pendant that hung around my neck. The smooth, cool stone felt comforting against my fingertips. I turned it over and over, my thoughts drifting to the ring Alex had given me earlier. It sat on the edge of the sink, catching the light and sending little reflections dancing around the room. I couldn't help but wonder about its supposed protective powers. What kind of protection could it offer? It was a sweet, thoughtful gesture, but it irked me that Alex saw me as someone who needed protecting. I am not, and do not want to be perceived as, a damsel in distress. I have no need of his shining armor.
