Chapter 8

As Kaya woke with the sun rise coming right through her windows, she slowly opens her eyes and slowly wakes up as the sun shines in one her face slowly. She gets out of bed and walks over to the window. Her reflection shows her the red silk pajama short set and shirt. As she watches the sun coming up she takes a moment to take a deep breath and then walks over to her closet and changes into some work out gear. She throws on her Nikes and heads to the top gym that is only a couple floors down for the building. The building itself is very exclusive and the higher floors host people like diplomats and dignitaries from other countries or royalty as well as other wealthy people that live there. As she is getting to the kitchen to make her coffee she feels a tap on her shoulder and turns her head to see her brother standing behind her. She grabs two cups, and he sits down as she goes about making the coffee for them, “So Ky were you ever going to tell me that you had talked to Marie?” Kaya stays quiet for a few moments while she sets up the machine then turns around, “I wanted to tell you but by the time she had to make a move it was too late.” She turns and leans against the counter as he looks at her, “and you had been hurt trying to help keep Lex safe. What the hell were you thinking not telling me that you had called Marie and asked for her help. Look I trust Marie, but her methods are sometimes questionable, and we have gotten hurt in the process paying the price for her help. I’m glad that you only walked away with a few bruises but remember that we only get involved with her work when we have no other choice Ky! She is dangerous even for us Ky!” Kaya looks at him, “Well guess what if I hadn’t called her then Lex could have been taken and who knows what would have happened to her. Do you really want Lexie to live through what we did and be scarred for the rest her life?” At this point Tyler slams his fist on the counter his voice still low and calm, “I remember what happened Ky there is no need to remind me. I live with that every day and the thought of them hurting her like they hurt me or doing to her what they did to you…I couldn’t forgive myself if something ever happened to her. Hell, it’s hard enough when I see you and think back to when you were just a happy innocent little girl. To when you would walk in smiling and laughing when you hugged me and say that I was the best brother ever. I was the best brother ever and yet when the time came you were the one that protected me and got blood on your hands. I will never be able to let that go and if that ever happened to Lex I wouldn’t survive it.” Tyler gets really quiet, and Kaya lets out a soft sigh as closes her eyes and looks at her brother, “I will always do whatever it takes to keep my family safe. I don’t care how much blood I have to get on my hands. I will bathe in a river of blood and build my thrown out of corpse if I have to.” Kaya turns around to avoid the look on her brothers face, “After all I am Death himself. Leader of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse as the media has deemed worthy to call me.” She takes the coffee cups and stirs them and as she is doing that she feels a hand on her shoulder which makes her turn with the coffee ready for her brother. He looks at her with a serious look that tells her that he is ready, “Well if you are Death then I am Aires the God of war. Together we will protect this family whatever it takes. I won’t let you go about things on your own ever again.” Kaya lets out a sigh, “To be clear you didn’t let me go on my own back then they beat you until you couldn’t stand and made you watch as I fought with other kids.”

Tyler lets out a sigh before taking a sip of his coffee, “That doesn’t matter we should have been together, and it does matter what comes our way next. We will face it together.” Tyler closes his eyes and lets out a loud sigh then opens them again, “Fine we can use Marie and her skills since you already got a hold of her, but next time tell me that you are calling her. I don’t care how you tell me: text, call me, email, facetime, hell a damn smoke signal. I don’t care but you tell me and for this we need her to be kept under control and not go about her own way. She loves us and will do anything to protect us, but I don’t want her running around hunting on her own. She is still using pretty dangerous methods.” Kaya takes a drink of her coffee and grabs two bananas one for each of them, “I get it. Trust me I don’t want her hunting all over our city either she will draw too much unwanted attention. Okay sounds like we are on the same page. Come on let’s finish this up and go spar downstairs. I heard the mayor is there with his son. We need to turn on the charm.” Tyler rolls his eyes as he finishes his coffee, “There she is the Cold CEO always thinking 10 steps ahead.” She grins and finishes her food and coffee then they head down to the gym. They meet the mayor and talk for a bit then make conversation with his son about his choice to go to Stanford. They set a lunch meeting with him to thank him for signing the contract and putting it through to its final stage. The mayor leaves and Kaya and Tyler walk to the back of the gym where a single door is located and head into the training room. The pair of them start to loosen up and stretch. Kaya is stretching when she says to her brother, “Ty it helped that we were able to have the mayor back us on the proposal and the contract. Now we just need to finish the over seas contracts. The lawyers said that there is only one signature left and that is the master’s, but you know him.” Tyler pulls on some bands to loosen up his arms, “yeah which means that we are taking a trip to Japan. Make sure that Marie follows us there I will take care of the arrangements for her just let her know the plan. I’m sure she has some contacts in Japan.” Kaya sits up right and brings her legs together to stretch them out in front of her, “f**k Master Hatsume is going to kill us for not coming in the first place. I guess I’ll tell Berny to make sure the compound is ready for us to use. This might make it easier to draw out the person who is targeting us.” Tyler nods, “That’s true travel is the best way to make things look like an accident. Well, you ready squirt? We need to get this going before everyone else gets up.”  Kaya jumps up and nods to him as they take their shoes off and step on to the mat to start sparring. They start and Mal walks in from a run she had gone on just earlier than them. She it’s in the corner after she bows when she walks in and takes her shoes off.

She sits and watches the two of them train as they move through their martial arts training. The pair starts off with Muay Thai Then moves on to jujitsu. Then to Aikido. After they get back up Mal gets up herself and walks over to the wall where there are wooden swords and grabs two of them off the wall. She walks to the center of the mat and hands them each a sword, “time for Kendo I take it?” The pair of them nod and take the swords. Mal walks back to where she was sitting and watches them start. They start moving through the usual training that they would have and then to combat with each other. They move like a pair of dancers and as the sword strike each other Mal starts to think about the time that they all spent with their Master in Japan while they all studies to get their black belts to be able to defend themselves. She sits and remembers that her sister Anna, Casey, Payton, and herself were all happy to study Aikido and some karate but Tyler and Kaya were fascinated and studies more than one martial art at a time. Seeing them now she remembers the day that Master Hatsume tells them about the samurai of the old empire and that they were brave and fought with all their hearts. Mal grins as she thinks about the fact that if these two had been born in the time of the samurai and Kaya had been born a man then they would have been generals. She watches the pair of them study and attack each other like a choreographed dance that they have practiced for years. Mal had always loved to watch them practice it was like watching two masters at work. They were all seen as proteges but these two would beat everyone out for the top spot every time and when they would spar she could see why. She could see all the dedication that they put into whatever they did. Mal gets dragged out of her thoughts by the sound of the swords colliding faster now and see that they have sped up to see if they can beat each other. She rolls her eyes remember that they are tied and are always tied. She watches as Kaya makes a move and throws Tyler off his balance then brings her sword to his chin and stops centimeters away. Mal calls out, “fatal blow. Death. Ky wins.”

The two of them put their swords down and then bow to each other. Kaya looks up, “That is 567 me and 566 you. What do you say same time next week?” Tyler nods, “Same time next week and first to 1000 wins once and for all.” They all start laughing and put all the equipment back. They then head to the sauna and sit there for a few minutes before heading back upstairs. They all get back upstairs and see that they rest of the gang is up and ready to go after going for a run together. They all get ready and then sit down to breakfast when a man walks in the front door. He is a tall older man with a toned body and a full head of silver hair. He walks over to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and then sits next to Kaya and Tyler for breakfast. Kaya is taken aback at first but then recovers and so does Tyler, “Gramps. To what do we owe this pleasure?” Tyler goes back to eating his breakfast and Kaya takes a sip of her warm water with lemon. The man drinks his coffee and then Casey speaks up, “Good morning grandpa Tomas. What’s new?” Tomas takes his first bite of food and then swallows, “Good morning children. I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by and check on all of you.” Kaya takes another drink, “Well it’s good to see you gramps but Ty is right you don’t just come here without reason.” Tomas grins at her, “Well my grandkids do know me very well. I came here to give you this.” He hands her a note in a plastic bag and continues, “I thought that your detective would want to have the latest death threat now that the mayor has now endorsed the contract and pushed it through over here.” Kaya takes the notes and reads it out loud, “The last chance you will have is to pull the contract from the Japan branch or I promise you that it will be the last act of defiance that you ever make against me. You will be dead soon if you don’t do as I ask along with your sweet granddaughter and grandson. I promise that once I have you three I will make you watch as I break your granddaughter of her will to fight and leave a used mess so that she is begging for me to kill her. I will torture her in a way that is unique to her gender, and you are going to watch as I spoil her over and over and when I am done with her I will do the same to your grandson and all the while you will be tortured as well as you watch them die one at a time. When it is over you will be begging me to kill you old man. “ Kaya smirks, “Well someone is ambitious.” Tyler, Kaya, their grandfather, and Mal keep eating as the rest of the table stops until Casey speaks up, “Well that was very specific. Is there a reason you neglected to tell us how serious these letters were?” Mal answers, “We didn’t want any of you to worry so we kept it as PG as possible and just showed you the less threatening threats.” Payton puts her fork down now, “Mal you didn’t seem shocked to hear this so what do your threats looking like?” Mal shrugs, “Just about the same but they talk about how I will be alone for all my torture. Oh, pass the croissants.” Kaya passes the plate to Mal, and Anna slams her fist on the table gaining everyone’s attention and shock, “how can you four be so calm about this and why the f**k didn’t any of you tell me that the threats were so bad?” Tomas raises his hand, “young lady you are my granddaughter, and I will not have any of those outbursts.” Anna sits back in her chair and Kaya speaks up, “Look Ann we didn’t want you to worry, and we really didn’t want to scare you. The entire family has been getting threats like this and to be honest this one is the least graphic one that any of us have gotten. I do have to say that the one about using water boarding while they rape me was a very imaginative. Mal you should have the person studies in the lab when they write things like this and see what lights up in their brain.” Anna huffs and Kaya continues, “Sorry. I asked everyone to keep this from you three. I didn’t want you to have to stress about it unless you were getting things like this. Mal knew because of her threats.” Mal rolls her eyes, “yeah and I could’ve done without the ending up alone for all eternity parts. That is just so rude.” The table lets out an uneasy laugh that lifts some of the tension as Kaya goes on, “Look this the reason I went tighter with the security for the family. Just know that this kind of stuff doesn’t bother the four of us as much as it does the rest of you. Ann look mom and dad don’t even know that it’s this bad with some threats, so just relax we are taking care of it. I promise you that you and Lex are perfectly safe.”

They all keep eating and Tyler goes back to his room with his wife to calm her down. Kaya and Tomas go out on to the balcony and the rest of the group goes back to working in the living room. Kaya has a glass of tea with him, and they sit until he asks her a question, “So can this Gavin boy be trusted?” Kaya takes a drink of her tea and nods, “I think so, he hasn’t shown me that he can’t be trusted so far.” She sits in the chair opposite him as he nods, “I just don’t want you to have to go through the same thing that you did as before with Luc. You were in such a dark place after that. I just worry about you.” She nods and he gets up when he finishes his tea, “Well I should be going I have a lunch date with Mrs. Cunningham. I think she is finally being worn down.” Kaya grins and rolls her eyes and then shakes her head, “Gramps you have been wearing her down since we were kids. What makes things different now?” Tomas grins, “Because she finally said that she loves me back and I asked her to marry me and she didn’t say no.” Kaya smirks and shakes her head, “Well I hope all the best for you gramps. I love you and now I need to get back to work. Also, if Gavin messes up then I will destroy him myself. After all no one has the power to stand against the Grayson family.” Tomas smirks again, “Well if anyone can handle what life has to throw at a person its you. I love you too my sweet princess.” Tomas and Kaya walk back into the apartment, and she walks him out then goes back into the living room. Then sits down at her computer when she hears Mal from behind her screen "I got the tox reports and they confirmed everything that Ann told us about. I also got an email from Gavin’s doctor they are going to let him out tomorrow.” Kaya nods, “Case were you able to get all their stuff moved in and set up for the diet they all have?” Casey nods, “the last of the details was done yesterday I have the final pictures and the paperwork. I just sent it to you.” Kaya nods and opens her emails then goes through it all and gets all the final details put away. She gets her stuff packed up and tells the others that she will be working from home for the rest of the day. She says her goodbyes to everyone and heads to her penthouse. When she gets there she parks and heads up her private elevator. She gets to her floor and drops her things off in her office and then sinks in the chair behind her desk. She looks out at her view and ends up drifting off to sleep.
