Lunch was amazing. I enjoyed getting to know the people from my kingdom. I learned that Corbett is Cora’s youngest son, and he has two younger siblings, a brother and a sister, both back at home. Cora was my mother’s maid when she first became Queen of the Valarian Kingdom. She shared a few stories about her days with my mother and she seemed to be very fond of the experience.
“I remember the first day your mother came to the Castle. She was very nervous about meeting our kind, but we were more scared of her. We were surprised to learn that your father was mated to a Beta wolf. Your mother was stronger than most Beta wolves and she didn’t back down from a fight. She was sassy but had the class of a queen and her heart belonged to your father and nobody could ever question that. She was beautiful and she cared about her people, and we were her people.” Mrs. Cora said with a smile, looking into my eyes.
“How long before my mother was accepted by our kind?” I asked and Mrs. Cora smiled.
“Not long at all. She came in like a force to be reckoned with. She gave respect and she demanded it as well. Before your father met your mom, he dated a couple of women in the kingdom secretly. They tried to make it difficult for her at first, but she put them in their place, and it was discreetly. Nobody even knew there was an issue until your father told the kingdom that she is going to be our queen and anybody that challenges her would be dealt with. Your mother never said a thing. The night of their wedding, your mother gave a speech to our people, and I will never forget what she said. She told us she was privileged to be our Queen and that no matter what differences we shared, we were her people, and she would forsake all to protect her people. She told us that she would love our King, your father, until her last breath and I believe she did love our King and our kind until her last breath.” Mrs. Cora said with a smile.
“Madaline wasn’t just our Queen, she was our friend. She worked in the nursery with the children, and she served dinner on the line with us. She never treated us inferior. She never made us feel like we weren’t important. She listened to us and helped us when we needed it and I was just a girl back then, but I remember her helping me do a puzzle in the children's center. She used to help us with our schoolwork, and she used to read stories to the babies in the nursery. She was truly one of a kind.” Jocelyn said with a smile.
“Jocelyn, you said earlier that you had all heard stories of my birth but was told I was dead. Did none of you see me as a baby? Did my parents hide me from the kingdom? Was my birth not announced?” I asked with a sad expression.
“I’m sorry King Dexter, your birth was forbidden at that time. Yes, your parents announced that an heir was born but only a few were able to see you in your dragon form after birth. You were always hidden in case the Elders came looking. It was said if they got their hands on you, they would kill you because a trihybrid species could not be controlled. When you shifted into your human form at three years old, your father had a going away party for you and he explained that you were going to go live with your uncle Daniel Covington until it was time for you to rule the kingdom.” Jocelyn said and my eyes went wide.
“Did my father call Daniel Covington his brother or did he just call him my uncle?” I asked and Jocelyn looked at me with a confused expression.
“He called him your uncle, but he never said Daniel was his brother. Daniel and your father were close friends, like brothers I suppose. We later learned that Daniel had adopted you and a year and a half or so later your parents were in the accident that killed them.” Cora said, looking at me with a sincere expression.
“When and how did you guys hear about the death of King Damien and Queen Madaline?” Cyir asked and Cora looked at me.
“It’s okay, you can answer him. He’s my future brother-in-law. He’s Angel’s brother.” I said and Cora nodded before answering his question.
“Daniel came to the kingdom and announced the death of the King and Queen a few days after the accident. He read a journal entry from our King’s journal telling us that he was going to train King Dexter to be ready to return when he was of age and, in the meantime, we are to regard Daniel as King.” Cora said and Christopher looked at me and nodded his head as to tell me to come to him.
“Did Daniel visit your kingdom often?” Cyir asked and Cora waited a minute then responded.
“He used to come every couple of weeks with King Dexter, but then it turned into every couple of months, and it had been several years since his last visit when he came and told us that King Dexter had been killed on a family trip to the states, that was almost six years ago.” Cora said and I could hear the honesty in her tone even though my back was turned to her, and I was almost one hundred feet away from her.
“I called you over here because I wanted to see if she would continue to answer Cy's questions without you in her face. I believe her, she sounds sincere but there is something missing, and I can’t figure out what it is.” Christopher said, looking deep into my eyes.
“I think I know what it is.” I said, and walked back over to Mrs. Cora and Cyir.
“Cora, did Daniel ever mention my grandfather when he visited? Also, did he ever bring a young girl with him and me when I was a toddler?” I asked and Mrs. Cora's eyes widened.
“No, Daniel never mentioned your grandfather and no, he never brought a young girl with him and you, but he did bring a young girl the day he told us you were killed on a family trip. He had the girl describe the incident in detail.” Mrs. Cora said and Cyir nodded.
“Do you remember the young girl’s name or what she looked like?” Cyir asked and Mrs. Cora smiled.
“Of course, we were told that she was going to be our future Queen. Her name is Princess Adaline. She came to see us not too long ago. She told us that her time to reign is near and that soon she will return.” Mrs. Cora said and frowned.
In that moment, I felt an anger I had never felt before. Adaline had lied to me. She told me she didn’t know anything about my so-call death in the states. She said her father never told her anything. I guess Angel could sense my anger because she stepped in front of me and placed her hands on my face.
“Thomas, can I speak with you?” Angel asked, looking deep into my eyes.
“Hello beautiful, you can speak with me anytime you desire. What’s on your mind?” Thomas asked her and she smiled.
“When my mother was younger, her wolf was able to show her flashes of her past. Are you able to do the same for Dexter?” Angel asked and Thomas, eyes softened.
“I can, I have been with Dexter since before he was born, I share all of his memories, emotions, and thoughts.” Thomas said and Angel smiled.
“That is actually a great idea, baby girl. I think that might actually help him.” King Caelan said with a smile.
“What memory do you want me to show him, my love?” Thomas asked Angel and she smiled.
“Show him his visits with his people and his time here before his parents gave him up.” Angel said, and I could feel Thomas stirring within me and when he smiled in my head, I knew he was ready to do whatever she wanted him to do.
‘Do you want to do this now or after all your birthday celebrations?’ Thomas asked me and I thought about it but decided to ask Angel her opinion.
“Can we do the memories after the party tonight? I don’t want to upset my mood and put a damper on all your mother has planned for me today?” I asked Angel and she smiled.
“Yeah, I think that is best.” She said with a smile and kissed my cheek.
