ANGELA The walk to the palace is not so bad. It is only about twenty minutes from my house. I started getting cold feet when we were just around the corner. “Are you okay?” Logan asks. He probably sensed how tense I am right now. “I’m fine. Let’s go,” “No, you are not. We can still turn back, you know,” I chuckle, shaking my head not approving. “We are already here. Imagine turning the whole way back now under this hot sun,” He laughs and holds my hand as we get closer to the main gate. “Okay. I just hope that you are ready and still remember what we practiced yesterday,” He puts his hand under my chin, boring his eyes into mine. “I hope so too… Wow!” My jaw drops to the ground as we get to the main gate. It is my first time at the Williams’ residence. I never knew that the palace could be this big. I am sure this whole yard of this gigantic house takes up half of the village. “Impressed?” That’s an understatement, Logan! “I am enthralled, I am not sure that is even the right word to use, but yes. I can see the palace from my house but, I just never knew that it is this big.” Well, I have never been too close to the palace as I am right now. I have seen it on TV, and of course, from my house, I could see a bit of it — only the north wing of the palace. Now that I am here, it feels surreal. Am I dreaming? “Well, welcome to my workplace,” Logan announces as the security guard opens the gate for us. “Good morning. May I please have your IDs please,” Logan had already told me to bring my ID because the security here is very tight. Even he also has to bring his ID with him, it doesn’t matter if he works for the King or not; we all have to go through the security check first. After the security scanned our IDs, he gave them back and asked us a few questions. “What are you here for?” The security asks. “She is here for the interview for Saturday’s helping job. I have already spoken to the Queen yesterday about her, so she is expecting her,” Logan tells the security guard. The security man takes the book from his desk and scrolls through it. “Angela Booth, you may go through. Logan, you know the protocols, you will have to wait for her here until she comes back,” I won’t lie, this is scary. I can feel my armpits and palms sweating I think I am going to die in there. The security guard makes me pass on what looks like a small security gate that scans my whole body, searching for any weapons or anything illegal. Nothing! What could I possibly carry to harm the royal highnesses? I wouldn’t even make it out alive. “Menzi, the young lady here to the Queen’s office,” I looked at Logan and he gave me a proud smile, nodding his head. “You will be okay. You will find me waiting for you, right here.” I nod as I walk with Menzi, the other scary-looking security guard. They all are scary, except for my man, hahaha. The way there are so many workers here — and I am talking from gardeners, personal guards, gatekeepers, maids, and many others. Do the workers even know each other? I don’t think so. We get into the house and Menzi asked me to wait in the foyer as he speaks to one of the few guards who are standing in their corners. I look around, admiring the big, beautiful sculpture of the King that welcomes anyone who walks in. Am I really in the royal house? Is this a dream, because if it is, I don’t want to wake up because Getty will certainly murder me that I was in the royal house. “Follow me,” The guard that Menzi was talking to beckons me up the stairs. I make my way up and follow him until we got to what really looked like an office. “You may go in,” Wait, what? That’s it? “Alone?” I ask, feeling my heart pounding in my throat. When the guard gives me a blank face, I take it as my queue and walk towards the door, knocking. I wait for a response before walking in. A sweet melodic voice instructs me to enter. I am assuming that it is the queen, definitely not alone. “Introduce yourself.” A deep sonorous voice says. My heart almost dropped to the floor when my eyes came in contact with both the King and Queen. Two guards were standing on either side of the king and queen. I quickly drop my face and answer them. “Angela Booth, sir… I mean, His Majesty, Her Majesty,” Oh God. I am already messing up the interview before it began. I don’t know, is it cold in here or what, but I feel like I need a blanket.   “Raise your head up so we can see you, Angel.” The queen says and I slowly raise my head. “Please have a seat,” She is so kind, but that does not make it any better. The King is quite intimidating. “Thank you.” I sit on the one sitter couch which is so comfortable, I swear it was made in heaven. The King is sitting on the office chair behind the desk whilst the Queen is standing next to him. They look so young and beautiful. I would do anything to live such a fancy life, wow. “Are you feeling cold? Should we turn down the AC?” The queen asks. Maybe I am too nervous, that is why I am feeling cold, right? But it is a hell of freezing in here. “I can handle it, Her Majesty, thank you,” Can I really handle it? “You look so young, sweetheart. Why do you want this job; do you think that you could be the best candidate for this job; tell us why?” The Queen asks. I take steady breaths before I could talk. I swear I want to cry right now; this is scary as s**t! “There is a lot that I want this job for, especially for school, but since it is only a once-off job, the income will make a difference at home. I also want to experience the feeling of working for the Royalties. I would also love to interact with people, communicate with them, create new friendships and get to know interesting things about the royal family of our Kingdom. I know how busy the Royal house can be so, giving people the best hospitality that they want is what I am all about. I am good at multitasking, working under pressure, and working best with a team,” The Queen smiles but the King is staring at me like he would kill me right now… okay, I may be exaggerating a little but that is how much his eyes are piercing at me. How old is he? He still looks so attractive. Angela, this man is old enough to be your father. My self-conscience reminds me. “My King, I love her,” The Queen says, flashing a smile at me but the King is still quiet and blankly staring at me. Oh God, his eyes are going to be the death of me. Why is the King looking at me like that; he hates me, isn’t he? I look down at my fingers, playing against each other. “So, tell me, there will be a certain attire that everyone will wear on Saturday. Are you still a virgin?” I gasp and choke on my saliva. What does my virginity have to do with anything? “Uhm… I-yes, I am still a virgin.” It is a good thing, right? The King clears his throat. This is so awkward and uncomfortable. “Do not put your hopes high, little girl, there are still more candidates to interview,” The King says. That’s it, the King hates me, and it hurts so much. “Oh, Ethan! Can you just be quiet a little, please? She can be one of the chosen candidates,” The queen retorts before she sets her eyes at me. “Please come back tomorrow with your qualifications, ID, and proof of residence. We will show you around the palace, you are hired,” “Oh my God, just like that? I mean, the king has already mentioned that there are still more candidates to run through before you hire anyone,” I try hiding my excitement. I think the room is getting hot now. “I chose you, didn’t I? So, I will be expecting you tomorrow,” I wanted to scream so bad, but I retracted from it. I took a deep breath and smiled. “Thank you,” I said. The King stood up from his seat and then walked around the table, with the guard following him. I got so scared when he walked towards me. I can’t explain how the hot temperature that I felt a few seconds ago had frozen again. I feel chills running all over my body and my body is trembling. His golden-brown eyes shone and I got lost in them. I was so surprised to see his hand stretching, and his lips curved a little. Is that a smile? I also stand in front of him and stretch my hand for his handshake. Something so weird happened when our hands touched. His hands were so cold, but that was not even the problem. The problem is when my whole body felt electrocuted, making me fall back on the couch with my butt. “Welcome,” The King said before leaving the room. He did feel that, didn’t he? What just happened? “Oh, I apologize on behalf of my husband. He tends to show off sometimes, but do not worry about it, okay?” The queen says. *** “I knew that you were going to nail the interview; I am proud of you,” Logan and I are back home, at our usual spot, on the rock. He bought us iced juice along the way. “Me too. I am still shaken by how I did that,” I sigh as I think about how the whole interview went. I am still puzzled about it. “I hope they don’t find out about this at home, especially Getty. She will ruin things for me,” “This is a good opportunity, not everyone can make it into the Royal house. Don’t make it obvious that you are hiding something; your grandmother trusts me with you so, tell her that you are with me.” I nod. My mother hates the royal family like they have done something to her before, but she refuses to say what it is. “I love you, Logan. I will never thank you enough for what you do for me,” “Kiss me, my little vampire,” I laugh at his silly remark. I pull my lips into my teeth and move closer to him. Our lips join for a passionate kiss. Our breathing pattern changes as the kiss gets heated. He moves his hands on my thigh, I pull out looking at him in his eyes. “We can’t do this here, people are watching,” He pulls me on his chest. “What people?” He pecks my cheek and chuckles.
