Dad deciding to step down without a word gave me more work than I could deal with. It was nearly ten in the evening and I was still at the office, going through all the projects dad lined up for the upcoming year.
He had great plans like always which meant a lot of work.
Leaning back and stretching to get rid of some of the stiffness in my shoulders and back I sat up when my office door suddenly flung open, banging the wall with such force either the door or the wall would get damaged.
Nina stomped her way through, only she could enter someone’s office like that.
“Go home.” I waved her off, “Your husband is going to get upset with me.”
She flashed me a big fake smile, closing the door carefully behind her which she didn’t have to do considering her loud-ass entrance.
“My husband is a considerate man.” She said confidently, taking a seat in the chair in front of my desk.
We stared at each other, both of us trying our hardest with our serious faces. Nina was the first to cave in, she laughed loud without a care in the world. Her face was alight, she looked like her normal self again.
I laughed too, “He’s considerate when it comes to you.” I pointed at her.
She didn’t disagree with me, instead, she nodded, "You're probably right." She shrugged her shoulders, looking as aloof as ever, "He cares about Joshua too and of course my family. He's obsessed with dad."
I rolled my eyes, “Great.”
She laughed, it wasn’t as genuine as her little outburst earlier. It sounded cheeky which meant she was making fun of me again.
“Nick, look at you.” She gestured to me and then motioned to my desk. I didn’t understand what she was trying to say but Nina was always an impatient one, she wouldn’t keep me waiting, “You’re still at the office, working and forgetting about dinner and it’s nearing midnight.” She raised an eyebrow at me, “Dad’s proud of you, don’t ever doubt that.”
She didn’t give me time to respond. She got to her feet, her look full of expectation. I didn’t understand what she wanted from me though.
“Heard you had an amazing dinner last week.”
Great, news spread fast. Someone must have posted a picture online. Dinner wasn’t great at all but thankfully Tinkerbell played along to get the amazing Grace off my back. Damn annoying woman was too ambitious for her own liking.
She didn’t even have a shred of humanity left in her or it was buried so deep no one could reach it.
“Amazing?” The tone I used made Nina raise an eyebrow at me, “That was absolute torture.” I clarified, “Owen was head over heels for this crazy woman who most people find attractive. She was trying to get in my pants because of who I am. I tried to make it clear to the crazy woman I wasn’t interested and tried to use Tinkerbell to make that point. Thank God Tinkerbell got the hint and played along. That could have been one messy situation.”
Nina stared at me with such a serious look on her face it actually worried me a little.
“Tinkerbell?” She asked, she seemed offended which made me roll my eyes.
“Fine, Amber.” I corrected myself.
Nina didn’t seem content with that either. There was no pleasing this woman, now that she was pregnant she’s going from hot to cold in a split second. It’s almost scary.
Nina made big gestures with her hands, still looking very annoyed with me, “I’m not touching that one. If you’re oblivious to the situation then so be it.” She got up which she probably did too fast because she stumbled back and grabbed onto the back of her chair.
“s**t!” I shot up from my chair as well and quickly walked around the desk to grab her arm and steady her, Nina didn’t like that either.
“I’m fine.” She muttered, trying to push me away, “I’m fine.’ She said a little angrier when I didn’t move, “I’m going home and you try to figure this out yourself Mr. CEO. You’ve got a brain on you, use it, please.”
She threw me a glare when I didn’t want to let go of her. Holding my hands up in defense to make sure this wouldn’t escalate because Nina was definitely in an annoyed mood right now I let her go. She threw me another glare for good measure and left my office.
The women in my life were all out of their minds, annoying creatures who were confusing and hell on heels.
***
It was nearing midnight when I finally was able to go home. Sitting in the back of my car going through my never-ending emails a text from Owen caught my eye. He wasn't in a good place right now, he pretended to be fine but I knew that horrible woman did a number on him.
So I texted him back.
It was odd that he wanted to meet up at a very popular bar in the middle of the week when it was so late but I couldn’t refuse him. I told my driver the address to this place Owen wanted to meet up. When my driver pulled aside I noticed how crowded it was.
The press there too, maybe someone famous decided to stop by for a drink.
Climbing out of the car I wanted to make my way through the crowd to enter the establishment but a high pitched voice calling out to me stopped me in my tracks. The cameras pointed at me as a familiar blonde ran up to me and wrapped her arms around my neck, leaning in to kiss me. Seeing it coming from a mile away I turned my head, making her kiss land on my cheek.
I couldn’t tell her off not when the press was there to capture it all, I couldn’t let bad press get out when Merigold Chocolate was working on big projects.
This conniving woman would have her fifteen minutes of fame.
Giving the press a few pictures of us, I placed my hand on her lower back and leaned in close to whisper in her ear.
“You came here with Owen?” I asked her.
She smiled prettily for the camera, she knew all the right poses and angles because she did it for a living. I had enough of the charade and pulled away from her to enter the bar. Grace didn’t let me get away from her though. She latched onto my arm and walked in with me.
I glanced behind me, watching security close the doors to ensure the press wouldn’t enter.
"You're more famous than I thought," I admitted to her.
We reached the bar, I needed a drink and I needed this leech to let go of me. Pulling away from her I straightened my jacket and tie.
“Where is Owen?” I asked her, not forgetting that she didn’t answer my question earlier either.
Something was up, a conniving woman like this one could never be trusted.
She ordered her bubbles and smiled prettily for me too. She could charm the room with that smile of hers while she flashed her boobs which were spilling out of her black little glittery dress but it wasn’t working on me.
It felt cheap to me.
She raised the flute of champagne to her red lips and sipped from it, her behavior started to get on my nerves and I realized in that moment that Owen wasn't here. It made me knock back my whiskey, the alcohol burning my throat but I didn't care.
This woman manipulated me, I deserved a drink.
“Owen isn’t here.” She turned to look at me, her lips curling up to a smirk, “But you realized that already.” She giggled, raising her flute to me, “I wanted to have some alone time with you so I used his phone when he came to see me tonight.”
She was unbelievable.
"I'm leaving," I announced.
"You could do that but then you wouldn't know what I'd tell the press." I spun around to face the she-devil who was now mischievously smirking at me. She stepped to me, her hand pressing against my chest as she leaned in, "You wouldn't want Owen to suffer even more, do you?" She asked, "I mean, he'll see the photos of us together and feel betrayed by you."
I didn’t push her away, afraid of someone in this bar filming our encounter together or taking pictures of us. She could even have asked a friend to do that on her behave. This blonde skinny woman with so much hair was terrifying in her own way.
“You texted me from his phone, I think that he’ll get the picture when I explain the situation to him.” I let her know.
Her face fell. This woman manipulative indeed, also just a horrible person in genuine but she wasn’t very bright. She realized her mistake, all the light leaving her eyes as she pulled away. Standing before me with her arms crossed while she stared at her flute.
“That’s true, he’ll realize what I’ve done when you tell him everything.” She glanced at me again, “But you know Owen is crazy about me. Even a three-year-old can see that. You think your friendship can survive a woman playing you both?” She asked, “I know he’s the only friend you have.”
A hollow chuckle left her red painted lips. It sounded dark and sinister, probably because the woman before me was all of the above.
Her eyes got colder with the seconds that passed, “The Merigold siblings are sad, really. Pretending to get along with everyone when in reality you have no one around who actually cares, family excluded of course.”
"Don't bring Nina into this," I warned her calmly, yet I knew eyes told her a different story.
She wasn’t taken back by it. She smiled that stupid, annoying smile of hers. Sure, it brightened her whole face and did make her look pretty, I suppose. I hated seeing her smile like that because surely she was up to no good again.
“I wouldn’t dare, I can only imagine what Jacob Blackwood would do to me if I even breathed the same air as his precious wife.”
I rolled my eyes. Great, she wasn’t afraid of me but she shivered in her heels only thinking of that man. He always won, there was no competing with that man. The family was obsessed with him and my enemies were apparently terrified of him.
Fucking great.
“We could help each other, Nick.” She continued as if she didn’t just confess to me that Nina’s husband scared her, she ran her fingers over my arm in a way which left nothing to the imagination, “So let’s start over and have a drink.”
Not wanting to cause a scene I followed her to a booth. Sinking into the leather seat I raised an eyebrow when Grace sat down right next to me. There was plenty of room but she sat as close to me as she could.
“One drink.” I told her, “Some of us do need to start the day bright and early.”
She caught the attention of a waiter and ordered us another drink.
“One drink.” She promised me.
