1. Not Your Owl
Avery POV
“Grr, grr, grr,” the annoying familiar sound of my own very ringtone startled me to the core. I groaned loudly rolling over in bed trying to silence my rising phone. I decided against it when I realized the big name on the screen.
“Hello Dr Taylor, I answered in a hoarse and husky voice. I slowly realized that fact and cleared my throat in order to let my voice be less hoarse. Moon goddess knows that I am sounding like a man right now.
Avery this is actually Dr Chandler from the ER ,” the voice on the other end said and I slowly brought my screen to my face. Oh my moon goddess, I had actually mistaken Dr Taylor for Dr Chandler!
“Oh really, I am sorry for the mistake. I am actually just waking up to your call. I hope you don't mind my blunder. I apologize while rubbing my puffy eyes in order to keep me awake.
“It's no big deal after you just left the hospital three hours ago. Look I know you're on leave but we really need you. We have got multiple wounded and injured packguards and apparently we are short staffed,” he blurted out and that immediately brought me out of my dizzy state.
“How many patients?” I asked, knowing that I did say yes in the end. After all, I cannot continue my beauty sleep after knowing that some pack guards are dying.
“Five all critical three and fraction injuries in the heart and carotid pulse. Whilst the rest have wolfsbane in the system!" He briefed me and that was all I needed to hear. I sighed while throwing off the covers and slid on my puffy slippers.
“I will be there in 20,” I assured him and I could hear the sigh of relief from the other end.
“Thank you very much, we owe you one!” I hung up the phone, I worked to wash the mirror and completely took out the sleep marks from my eyes. I had huge bags lying under my eyes.
I should be getting the very beautiful sleep I needed but leave or not, I couldn't just turn back on patients in need.
I rushed to get dressed and I stared at the mirror and gave myself a satisfactory nod. My eyebags were carefully hidden and in fact my pale skin had a teeny bit of life in it. I put on my black mascara to make my green eyes pop out.
I was about to leave when I heard a faint knock on my door. “Come in!” I ordered knowing exactly who it was. My sweet and yet annoying little sister Piper Blackwood.
Then to my surprise, she was already dressed up in a beaded top and tight jeans. Her straight blonde hair was in curls today and she had smokey eyes that made her green eyes stand out. We both stole the green eyes from Mom and the rest of our facial features from dad.
“Don't tell me you are about to go back to the hospital again,” she c****d her head with disatisfaction on her lips.
“Yes,” I answered truthfully knowing fully well what her next words would be.
“Avery Blackwood,” I read her lips knowing the exact next words she was about to say.
“You are no goddamn machine, you need some freaking rest but you ain't willing to give your body the rest it deserves. I think you are currently trying to self sabotage yourself and you need therapy!” I exhaled loudly as I mimed my sister's words perfectly and not missing a single bit of it.
Wait, did I just forget to mention to you guys that my little sweet sister is a therapist. She is the only sane person in our family. I am saying the only sane Blackwood and trust me when I say that I am not exaggerating. I hope it stays that way.
“Fine Piper, I really did take a leave but there was an emergency and there is nothing that I can do about it,” I explained but that didn't lower her guard down one bit.
“You know what Avery... “ she paused, walking towards my vanity and picking up one of my favorite perfumes spraying it on her wrist, neckline and clothes.
“ I think you are going to overwork yourself to death,” she said, putting back down the bottle and applying my rose tinted blush. That is my little sister for you to think anything I own is hers, she doesn't ever ask for it not like she needs to ask. I did give it to her anyway.
“Piper, I promise you I won't, now I have to go because I promised that I will be there in 20 minutes time!” I pleaded, hoping that she spared me this never ending lecture.
“Fine I think you should have breakfast, the hospital food is totally bland, tastes like plain paper and starch!” she grimaced, disgusted by the evidence on her lips.
Next time Piper and I think hospital food tastes just fine and nutritious!” I winked at her and she rolled her eyes.
“But you do remember that you made plans with Kieran right? he would be so heart broken if you did cancel out…” she paused as if to create a dramatic effect.
“ Again…” She completed it and I let out a sigh. This is the second time in a week that I have been canceling plans with Kieran. First it was to be his plus one to a charity event hosted to help one of the packs that lost its members and properties to an unknown wildfire.
Investigations are currently going on by the council to know the cause and start of the fire but they haven't yet found the cause. Rumor has it that many of the council members believe that the fire incident was started by a rival pack or rogues looking forward to inhabiting the area.
He was so angry that I couldn't make it. I was quite angry too because I have spent weeks planning for the event dress and makeup only to end up being stuck with a seventeen hour unplanned surgery. Luckily my sister Piper was there to save the day and volunteered to go, making Kieran's anger dissipate only a little.
“Yes but I promise this is the last time that I am canceling out on him.” I said determinedly hoping that she'd pass on my message.
You should be telling him Avery, you know that his birthday and alpha coronation is next week and he needs you by his side…” she gulped down some liquid and then continued. “I am not YOUR OWL!”
