“So you will train with me?” she sat on my bed again, in the same spot she was sitting just before Adrian interrupted us.
“It seems like it,” I replied. Her smile widened, and I could see that it was a genuine smile. She was thrilled to hear this.
“It seems my big dumb bro is jealous, extremely jealous on top of that,” she said. She was right. Alphas were jealous and especially with their strong wolves. It was really difficult to keep their emotions under control when someone else crossed their boundaries and came too close to their mates. It showed me that he still felt the bond between us, but it didn’t change the fact that he was behaving like a moron.
“What happened to your parents? Do you know?” I knew that question might bring back unwanted memories that she might not like to revisit. We had also only just met, but I was really curious as to how it was possible that both the Alpha and Luna perished. Usually at least one survived. Almost always, unless most of the pack was wiped out during a huge attack.
A shadow crossed Angela’s face, and I knew I drifted into a dark current, full of painful memories.
She turned around and fixed her eyes on something outside as she stared out of my window. She was breathing quickly and I didn’t know whether she wanted to avoid the question or was gathering the strength to talk about it. The only thing I could do in this situation was to give her the space she needed.
“Around twelve years ago, our pack was under attack. My father took care of the attackers. When the rogue Alpha attacked, someone got to where my mother was…” her voice broke in the middle. I could already guess the rest of the story, but Angela seemed to be wanting to finish it by herself.
“Adrian told me that as soon as our mother died, our father felt it. He let out the most animalistic growl before launching himself onto the rogue Alpha. Our uncle later explained to us that my father suffered an immense piercing pain and couldn’t fight anymore. The Rogue Alpha killed him within seconds of my father suffering the most excruciating pain wolves could ever experience. I don’t know how they got to one of our safe houses which are located all around the pack. They even found the exact one where my mother was.” I closed my eyes, pushing back the tears which were threatening to fall.
I couldn’t imagine the pain she must have gone through as well, losing not only her father but her mother at the same time. That might be maybe the reason for Adrian closing himself off and freezing his heart. Maybe he simply wanted to stay away from the possibility of meeting the same end as his parents. If I was counting correctly, he was around thirteen years old when that happened, so he remembered it pretty clearly. But something in her story bothered me. It was pretty common for any pack to have several safe houses all around the pack so women and especially kids could reach safe places as soon as possible and stay away from the fights. The Alpha’s son being outside was common, especially at that age since Alphas always had to train from childhood, but getting to the exact place where her mother was, that must have been pure luck.
“Did they raid any other safe houses at that time?” I wanted to give her a bit of time to regain her strength and shake off the memories I had brought back, but that question was buzzing in my mind and I couldn’t shake it off.
“As far as I know not,” she answered. That was really strange. I would understand if they found several of them or none, but somehow they got to the one where the Luna was, as if they had specifically targeted her.
“Why? Is there something wrong?” She suddenly turned to me and her expression changed completely. She had regained her composure and my question caught her full attention. I didn’t plan to point fingers or open the old wounds, so I just shook my head to leave it at that.
“No, no. I was just curious,” I lied. The doubt didn’t leave me, but for now it was just my speculation with no proof other than my feelings.
“But now I understand why your brother is cold as ice. He might be keeping me away for exactly that reason. It will be tough to break that thick ice.” I quickly redirected her mind, knowing that she might try to oppose. She was the kind of person who loved to meddle in the other’s affairs, especially since that person was her brother. The only thing I was trying to guess was whether she wanted to tease her brother or make us work. Either way, she was probably helping me, no matter the reasoning behind it.
“Nah, we will make him. Don’t worry. I’ve already prepared a long range strategy on how to melt his icy heart. At first I was a bit reluctant since I didn’t know who you were, but now I am sure and if not, I am going to kick his stubborn a*s.” She totally dedicated herself to her new mission and, honestly, I wasn’t really sure what I did to get her approval so quickly.
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
“You haven’t even been here one day and you are already able to fight my brother in order to protect our pack members. You are beautiful and you are a funny person, but tough and strong as well. I like you a lot and having a sister like you is a wonderful blessing. I will not let my stupid brother take such a person away from me,” she said and I couldn’t help but laugh at her expression. Angela was like a child who was talking about going to a war against her parents. She reminded me of myself when I was younger. Way younger than she was now, but I guess having such a bull-headed brother who protected her no matter what and with a background like hers, always staying in her role, sure she became this childish since it was her daily routine.
“Your brother is pretty cold, but to be honest, I think you are way scarier than him,” I said out loud, hoping she wouldn’t mind, but to my surprise, she just laughed loudly. I think I already liked her more than I would have expected.
“You bet,” she said, winking at me. Just as I thought we could continue our nice conversation, an extremely loud growl echoed in my room. Angela widened her eyes and almost instantly locked her eyes on my stomach before she looked me dead in the eye.
“What the hell was that?” she asked. I had never felt so embarrassed in my life. I was a nice, polite and especially cute girl, but for some reason my stomach always forgot those characteristics of mine. When I forgot to eat, the rumbling in my stomach could rattle even the sturdiest mountain standing right in front of me. Back in my pack I always made sure to eat at specific intervals and always carried something small to eat with me, like chocolate bars or anything just to fill my stomach. After what happened at the training ground, I forgot that I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast and it was pretty late already.
“That’s my stomach,” I answered her shyly.
“Are you sure it was your stomach and not some animal which you are hiding there?” she raised her eyebrow, and I wasn’t really sure if she was joking or dead serious. I hoped she was joking and was just trying to tease me and knowing my stomach and having heard it many times myself, it really made people think I was hiding some sort of ferocious animal.
“Yeah, I am sure about that,” I told her, quite embarrassed, before I pulled her up on her feet and led her out of the room. I really had to get some lunch or else I wasn’t sure what else my stomach would do to shame me even more.
