Tim frowned looking at her.
Nancy knew he wanted to say no.
She hurt the love of his life, why would he want to watch the stars with her? He would rather cut her into pieces before tossing her into the sea.
But he didn't know the bad condition she was in. She could hardly maintain her balance against the wind, not to mention hurting Rachel. She couldn't touch Rachel if Rachel was determined to keep her distance. But Rachel wasn't. She wanted Tim to see what he thought he saw.
Nancy glanced at the dress Rachel was in.
It was a pale pink dress, with little lilac flowers embroidered on it. Wasn't it pretty?
It was just to Tim's taste. Nancy used to have a dozen dresses just like it, most of which were presents from Tim.
The dress looked so innocent and quiet.
And the person wearing it?
She looked hurt, and was sobbing, as if she was in great pain.
Nancy smiled: "Miss Rachel, I hope I'm not being too forward. What do you do?"
Rachel looked scared by the question suddenly addressed to her. She trembled before pulling herself against Tim's chest and whispering: "Tim..."
"It's okay. I won't let her hurt you." Tim wrapped his arm securely around her waist, and stroked her hair soothingly.
When his eyes traveled to Nancy, they were again cold and wary: "Why are you asking?"
Nancy said with a smile: "Nothing. Just curious."
Tim warned: "It's none of your business, Nancy Roberts. I suggest you talk a walk and keep your hands off Rachel."
Nancy replied with a sneer: "And I suggest you lose that attitude. I don't know what I'm capable of when pissed off."
"You..."
Nancy saw the anger in his eyes. She almost laughed seeing him furious but silent because he was afraid she might hurt Rachel.
Everyone has weaknesses.
Her son was her weakness, and Rachel was Tim's weakness. She was already a vicious and heartless woman in his eyes, so she decided it didn't matter if one more crime was added to the list: getting what she wanted with Tim by threatening to hurt Rachel.
Nancy walked past them, and announced before entering the house: "Tonight, seven o'clock, I'll be waiting for you on the rooftop."
Her wedding room was on the second floor. It had a large French window.
When she looked down from there, Tim and Rachel were already gone.
He probably went to the hospital to have Rachel checked up.
He must be really worried about her, wasn't he?
That was just like him. When he loved someone, he would do everything he could to protect her.
That someone used to be her. But now he hated her; Rachel was the love of his life now.
It didn't matter though. Not anymore. She only wanted to get pregnant and save her child.
She took out her phone, and started to record today's video.
Nancy gave a big smile at the camera: "Hi sweetie, it's mum. I don't know if you're gonna watch this video. If you are, mummy can't be there with you anymore. But don't be sad. Mummy is just going to another world. There'll be flowers, trees, and streams. It'll be beautiful, and...quiet."
She smiled, the tenderness of maternal love glowing in her eyes.
"Although I can't be there for you, I want you to know, that I love you so much. I've been thinking about your name. And I got a really good one today. Your name'll be Lucas, Lucas as in the sun. Mummy want you to be happy, and sunny, like a little sun. Do you like it?"
"Sweetie, if you miss me, just look up at the stars. I'll be up there, and watching over you every night..."
The rest of the words got stuck in her throat.
She couldn't hold back the sobs.
Nancy quickly covered her mouth and ended the recording. She couldn't let her son see her like this.
She saved the video in a USB flash drive, went downstairs and sent it by post.
