Chapter 8

1097 Words
~Jax~ “Jaxy?.........HELLO? JAXY!” My arm shakes, and I look up quickly. Where the hell did Melanie come from? I look around the room and realize I’m sitting in the dining room, but I don’t remember coming in. I look down, and Kamila is asleep in my arms, but I don’t remember putting her down. I look up, and Melanie is staring at me with concern all over her face. I clear my throat and try to collect my thoughts. “I…….I found her…..” “You found who?” I swallow, the word feeling weird in my throat. “I found…..my mate.” Melanie’s eyes light up. “JAXY! That’s amazing! Oh Goddess, I’m so happy for you.” I don’t know what my reaction is. Do I have a smile on my face? Do I look freaked out? I can’t feel anything, so I can’t tell. I feel so numb due to shock. I’ve always wanted my mate, and lately, I’ve been wondering when I’d meet her. Now that I have, I have no idea what to do or think. I mean, I‘m excited, but I’m scared s**tless at the same time. My checkered past isn’t leaving me much confidence. Kamila squirms in my arms, making small noises. I lean down and kiss her forehead while rocking her a bit so she’ll settle back to sleep. A tapping breaks me from my concentration. Melanie looks exasperated, staring at me. “WELL?!” “What?” “Tell me about her. I want to know everything.” “I don’t even know anything so what would I tell you?” “You know nothing? How is that possible?” “Everytihng happened so fast. I only got her name, Shanice.” Just her name on my lips brings me pleasures I’ve never had before. I can feel my body responding, which isn’t ideal with Melanie and Kamila here. I know her name, but I need more. ~Shanice~ I’ve been in and out of this meeting. Janice has been answering most of the questions, and I’m grateful for that. She tried not to tell too much about our previous pack. They had when people leave because they don’t want their secrets exposed. The best way to keep safe is to keep your mouth closed and stay under the radar. Alpha Jayden left us with some paperwork to fill out, saying he needed to check on something. I’ve been trying to concentrate on the pages in front of me, but Jax keeps popping into my head. I can’t stop thinking about his strong chin, those blue eyes, and just his overall self. That man is gorgeous, and he’s all mine. “So, you found your mate, huh?” I turn and look at Janice. She isn’t looking at me, but the pen in her hand isn’t moving. “It seems that way.” Janice doesn’t respond, but she starts to write again. I try to focus on my paperwork so that I can get out of this room. My wolf is aching to meet our mate officially, and I don’t disagree. “I guess you plan to get to know him better and complete the mate bond, right?” I turn to Janice, but she still isn’t looking at me. “I’d imagine that will happen, I mean what else would I do? He’s my mate after all.” Janice places her pen down and faces me. “I guess I should tell you then.” “Tell me what?” “The reason we came here, to Summit Mountain specifically.” I have wondered why she chose here of all places, and I even asked but got no response. There were many decent packs surrounding our old one, but she decided to travel so far to this one. I wonder what her reason has to do with my mate situation. “Well……what’s the reason?” “I decided to come here because of Jax. I don’t know how to tell you this, but he asked me to come. He wants me to be his chosen mate.” I can feel the blood drain from my face. This can’t be real….she can’t be serious. “What did you say?” I can only whisper, with no energy to be louder. My heart is pounding in my chest, and I swear I can hear a ringing in my ears. “Jax and I have known each other for some years. He asked me to come here and be with him. We love each other and have chosen each other.” My eyes start to blur, and I notice water drops on the paperwork in front of me. I drop the pen and rush out of the room. I need a minute alone to process all of this. I just found my mate, only to lose him without us even speaking. Lola is whining in my head, and it’s taking everything for me not to fall apart. My mate wants someone else, so where does that leave me? ~Janice~ I watch her run out of the office, and I can’t help the smile that grows on my face. If there’s one thing I know about my sister is that she’s not as strategic as I am. She will not try to go for Jax if she believes that we already have something. I don’t even have to worry about her finding out the truth because she won’t even approach him. I finish the paperwork and fill out the rest of Shanice’s so we can get through this process. It will be much easier to seduce Jax once we are on packlands. Alpha Jayden walks into the office once I finish the work. “Where’s your sister?” “Oh, she was feeling a bit sick so she went to find a restroom.” He nods and takes the paperwork to his desk. I sit quietly while he reads through each page. “This all looks great. I usually call previous packs to get some information, but in light of the pack you’re form, I don’t think that will be a good idea. You and your sister will be safe here. We will just need to see where we can place you two. I believe we have some free cottages.” I want to suggest staying in the packhouse, but I don’t want to be too obvious. It would be best if I bide my time and come up with a solid plan to get everything I deserve.
