18 I was deep in a dream about my dragon lover when a great crash woke me up. I sat up and spun around to face the window. Glass and the rickety wood panes rained down on the floor and my bed. My breath caught in my throat when I saw a cloaked figure kneeling on the floor. They stood and turned to me. A mask hid their figure and rumpled clothes kept me from recognizing man or woman. However, there was no mistaking the look in their eyes. It was a murderous intent. Another figure appeared on the broken windowsill, clothed exactly as the first intruder. The first person strode toward me, but Midge flew in front of their face and pecked at their cloth mask. The intruder stumbled back and drew out a short dagger from their waist.
