7 Selena lay on Dr. Parsons’s couch with a cool washcloth over her forehead. She drew up her knees to make room for Clover, who leapt up and tucked herself on top of Selena’s feet. “Your mother will be here soon,” said Dr. Parsons. She squeezed Selena’s hand. Selena’s head hurt so much, she didn’t want to open her eyes. She could feel a hot tear slide down her cheek. She was worse, not better. Worse than before. She felt like throwing up, the pain was so bad. Before long she heard the doorbell. It was like a gong inside her head. Then her mother was beside her, speaking softly, and obviously scared. “Let’s begin,” said Dr. Parsons. “Selena, can you hear me?” Then the pain disappeared and everything went black.
