9 Winnie dressed in comfortable clothes. Soft stretchy pants, a peach-colored fleece sweater over a white T-shirt. Matthew had tried to talk her out of what she wanted to do, but Rose convinced him to trust that Winnie was right. He called ahead to make sure that Klader would meet with them at his house. Matthew picked up Winnie in the Volvo and drove north again. She gazed out the window at the desert landscape passing by. The low winter sunlight washed out the colors of the plants, making them look gray and stark and dry. Winnie felt a different kind of dread than last night. But she also knew now what she knew.
