KATLYN
“Daddy, please!”
“It’s final, Leena….” I ignored my annoyance at his nickname for me as there were other more concerning matter at the moment, like the man standing on the other side of the room pretending as if I wasn’t fighting my father over him.
Z. Zurich. In other words, the man I hated the most.
Now, he stood there while I argued with my father, pretending like we both didn’t loathe each other with a passion of hundred burning suns. And my father wanted that man to be my shadow. In more sophisticated terms, my bodyguard. Really? I can’t have that. Even if the stalker didn’t get me, I was sure his glacial eyes and the disdain dripping from him toward me would definitely kill me. He brought something inside me, aside from the battles my mind already felt too incapable to fight. His presence and the disdain in his eyes for me only seemed to add fuel to the sparking of the wires inside my mind.
Even now as I tried to maintain my composer, I could feel the tremor in my hands and feet, the itch to go on a destructible path. I fought it as I said, “But I have Theo. He has protected me all this time and he could do it going forward.”
“I am not removing him but Zurich will be taking over.”
“Daddy, please.” He ignored me. My blood boiled in my veins and even though I knew shouldn’t, I couldn't help the outburst. “DADDY!!” He looked up with a calm expression and the thread of sanity stretched thin. Against my better judgement I grabbed the crystal ash tray on his table and threw it across the room where it shattered against the window, not even leaving a c***k in that said window which only made me madder.
My father didn’t pay much attention to my outburst, maybe because he was so used it and instead his eyes softened as he regarded me, “Leena…” He soft voice grated on my nerves. I clenched my jaw. “Princess, you know how much I and your mother love you. And your safety is something we can’t compromise on. You have to accept this. I won’t change my decision, no matter how many things you break.”
And I f*****g wanted to. There was a volcano simmering inside me that wanted to erupt but regardless of my brain glitching and sending signals to hurt everyone in sight and break everything to pieces, there was one rational thought that stopped me from going any further. My father loved me. He loved me too much, and besides him there was a man standing not six feet away whose eyes I could feel on me just as I could feel the disgust crawling on my skin. No doubt he was thinking that how right he was the time when he had declared me a spoilt little brat, daddy’s princess. His exact words were, “I know women like you. You think the world revolves around you and should bend down to your will just because you’ve have a rich father who never said no to your demands. But all he did was raise a spoilt brat who has no manners and thinks herself a princess because Daddy gave you everything you desired.”
I had managed to ignore him since then which was nothing short of impossible but I had managed, despite how his words always clung to me like a poisonous serpent. But right now, even his presence wasn’t able to curb my impulses, when I have always managed to in front of an audience. Because having an audience could be fatal, I learned that too soon and have refrained from letting something like that happen again.
I took a deep breath, counted to three. When it didn’t help I counted from ten to one. And then I managed to say, “Fine. Then bring me anyone but HIM.” My calm tone banished by the end.
My father’s gaze flickered to the side and for a moment I thought he’d reconsider but he dashed my hopes as he shook his head. “Gabriel promised he’s the best for this job.”
“And what if the stalker isn’t caught. What is going to happen? Will I have to keep living with him hovering on my back?”
“It won’t come to it. Soon you’ll get married and your husband will keep you safe.” I scoffed but I didn’t say anything. We’ve had this discussion countless times and I didn’t want to have it again especially not in front of him.
With an irritated sigh, I turned around, flipped my soon to be bodyguard a finger and slammed the door hard as I left my father’s study. I’ll make his life a living hell that he’ll have no choice but to resign. I paused, an idea forming in my mind. Because of that unhinged stalker I had to live in hiding all this time and didn’t have a real life since last two years but if I was going to get a shadow to keep me protected then why the hell not enjoy the things I missed. The things that had actually provided me a sense of stability in the past and kept my mind from spiralling out.
I turned back around and barged inside my father’s study. Both the men looked up at my sudden appearance, I ignored the one who made me feel so agitated and focused on my father. I said, “If I’m going to have a shadow that I don’t want then I want what I can have of my normal life back.” I pointed my thumb at the brooding, silent man. “He can protect me, keep an eye on me however he wants.”
My father indulged me with a soft smile. “And what part of real life as you called it you want back?”
I smiled. “For starters, college, that I missed. And maybe live in a dorm?” I knew I was stretching it with the last part but it didn’t hurt to ask.
“Yes, to the college because I know you need it. And absolutely not, to dorms.” My father replied just as I knew he would. “There’s no safety in them. Girls and boys go out as they please.” My father added with a disapproving frown.
“But he would be there.” I pressed, trying my luck.
My father shook his head and when I opened my mouth to argue he held up a finger and said, “What I can allow is for you to have a separate house or a condo to live in.”
“Really?” I asked, excitement creeping into my body, my anger and annoyance forgotten.
“Really.” With a squeal I ran to my father and hugged him tight.
“I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, Leena.”
