Nat pov
Nat never pretended to be smart so when she decided to call Alex she knew she wasn’t going to like Alex’s answer. What she got was the last thing she expected when the call went through.
“Hello?” Nat asked. Nat didn’t hear a response though. She could only hear some shuffling around, followed by moans. And slaps? Then she heard it.
“ Lex! Alexei! Harder.” Nat quickly ended the call with tears streaming down her face. Natasha would recognize Anastasia’s voice anywhere. That woman was Nat’s worst bully other than Alexei.
Goddess she really was a fool. This is the only time she wished to be a werewolf like Liliana. At least with werewolf’s you knew when your mate was cheating. Nat had to be the biggest fool on earth to believe him. She just wished he was the little boy she was best friends with all those years ago.
Flashback begins
“Don’t go to far from the cabin!” Her mother yelled as Nat ran with Alexei hand in hand out to the lake.
“Yes mother!” Nat shouted back before turning back around, her twin pigtails bouncing back and forth. Natasha was excited, as she always was for the Patrovi’s to visit. The two six year old made their way to their special place. It was a small fort her father built for them a few months ago. The best part was that her father didn’t use magic. Luka had spent time with both of the kids and patiently taught them how to built the fort. Sure the door hung crooked, and it wasn’t the sturdiest thing out there but Nat love it.
The kids played for several hours, never getting cold despite it being winter.
“Hey you want to see something cool?” Alex asked.
“Always,” Nat responded with a smile. Alexei flashed his signature smirk and started to chant an incantation. Then slowly but surely a tiny flame erupted in the palm in his hand.
“Alexei!” Natasha was shocked, but Alexei mistook her shock for awe.
“Awesome isn’t it. Dad has been teaching me this for over a year. I finally managed to get this small flame.”
“Alexei, fire power is dark magic, you shouldn’t be doing it this young. They teach this at the academy!” Natasha whispered afraid her father would walk in any moment.
“What are you talking about?” Alex looked confused and a little hurt.
“Alex anything but light magic is f*******n until we reach the academy at age twelve. Ask my father.” Alexei looked disbelieving at her.
“My father wouldn’t do something like that.” Nat didn’t say anything else, but she knew what was wrong.
At dinner that night Natasha was super excited as her father came back that day while she was out playing with Alexei. Natasha wouldn’t get her hug until it was time for her lessons, her father was always stoic in front of company. Luka Volkov only let his guard down in private.
Dinner was super boring for her and Alexei. They sent notes across each other in the dinner table. Nat learned from a young age that she was to be mostly silent at the table. It wasn’t until desert that Nat’s opportunity presented itself. Alexei’s father brought up mastering fire magic at a young age. I’m
“Dad can you teach me fire magic tonight?” Nat asked her father. Every night when he was home her father would work on spells with Nat.
“Natasha you know that’s dark magic, we can work on creating more flowers,” Luka told her fondly.
“Daad!” Natasha whined. “I’m not a baby any longer, I should be doing something more advanced.” Natasha hated how her father embarrassed her in front of guests.
“We can move to something different, but you know the rules better than anyone Natasha Volkov,” her father said sharply. Natasha didn’t respond. Nat looked over at Alexei who was busy looking at his plate. I’m
That evening as she was lying down in bed completely drained from her lesson from her father Nat heard the door open. Nat couldn’t help but smile, Alexei always snuck in and spent the night in her bed with her.
Alexei got into bed and smiled at her.
“I thought my dad was scary.”
“He’s only like that in front of other people. When it’s just me and mom he’s so amazing.” Alexei’s smiled dropped and Natasha felt bad. She forgot his home life was different than her. Alexei’s parents were quite mean to him behind closed doors, especially when he failed to do magic. Natasha pulled him in for a hug and Alex hugged her back fiercely.
“Alex there’s a reason you can’t do dark magic before you are twelve. The darkness it will corrupt your soul. You can’t do it anymore,” Nat begged of him.
“I won’t I promise,” Alex said into her neck. Nat could feel the tears soaking through her nightshirt but she didn’t say anything. She never said anything, she just hugged her best friend back until they both fell asleep.

Flashback ends

Nat was brought out of her memories by her phone vibrating on her bed.
Nate picked up her phone as it dinged. She saw it was a picture from Alexei as she was a glutton for punishment. She opened it and saw him in bed with Anastasia. Nat could clearly tell it was Ana who took the picture, but Goddess did it hurt. The bond was supposed to be strong between two wicks, it wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Flashback
It was the first day of the academy and Nat was so excited as she would be able to se Alexei every day! She went to her first class, potions and there he was sitting with several people mostly boys. Nat approached them,
“Hey Alexei, can I sit with you?” The group of boys laughed, Natasha was confused. What was so funny?
“No half-blood you can’t,” Alexei responded.
“But-“ Natasha tried to protest.
“Scram!” One of the boys yelled and Natasha jumped back in fright. Natasha scurried over and sat in the back seat. Natasha was upset and hurt by Alexei’s behavior. He had been acting that way for a week. Nat tried to talk to him when he was alone, but he would just tell her to leave him alone.
Nat went to his dorm room one night, Alex was like her and had his own private dorm room. Natasha knocked on the door, but it remained unanswered.
Natasha was starting to get angry at this person who was supposed to be her best friend. Then in their defensive classes Alexei showed off his fire magic. It had been clear by his mastery that he had been practicing for several years. Natasha was furious, he didn’t listen to a word she or her father told him.
Alexei boasted to the whole class that his father had been teaching him fire magic for two years and the teacher applauded his diligence Natasha was fed up.
“Mr. Iranko I believe you have to report this to the coven leader right away.” Natasha said.
“What are you talking about girl?” The teacher didn’t even know who she was. Natasha’s anger was building.
“Teaching children dark magic before they enter the academy is forbidden.”
“Shut your mouth of things you don’t know girl.”
“If you don’t tell Luka Volkov I will.” Natasha said with nerves of steel. She may only be twelve but she was her fathers daughter.
“Why would he believe you?” Nat looked over at Alexei whose face was white as a sheet.
“Why would he believe me Alexei?” Alexei was silent. She looked at the teacher. “Maybe because I’m Natasha Volkov and I’m his daughter.” The teacher was pissed but he had to comply. Alexei was even more furious as his parents were deemed bad parents, and Alexei had to wear a monitor for the next year that kept a trace on all of his spells. The teacher had also been demoted as well.
Flashback over
Natasha thought back on her memory of that incident, and if she could do it over she would never have outted Alex. Nat would have done it secretly or something. She knew he would always hate her, but doing the right thing only made Alex hate her so much more. Nat probably should have told her father about Alex when they were kids, but Alex’s dad beat the crap out of him when he didn’t learn magic right away. Nat saw the bruises. She tried to get Alex to tell her dad but Alex refused.
That incident was the beginning of hell for her. Nat had pretty much been ignored by everyone before that. If she had only let it go then she would be fine, but she was just so angry at Alex for turning his back on her.
It was because of that incident that her father met his wick, she was one of the interviewees that came in to replace the teacher. Natasha would never deny anyone their wick, but that woman was pure evil. Julia and Alexei are the ones who made my life at the academy so awful.
There had always been a stigma of a child whose parents aren’t wicks, however my father is f*****g Luka Volkov. He could have made everyone accept if he wanted to, he didn’t and I had to bear the consequences.
Happy birthday to me.
