It was around three am and couldn't sleep. I wasn't even sure if I got the time right as the wall clock that sat on the wall outside the jail wasn't working. I looked around the small cell-like I had been doing for the past four days now, wondering if there was a way I could escape the barred room.
On the left corner was my cellmate, she was snoring loudly, and it was obvious she was sleeping peacefully. Which makes me wonder how she could fall asleep in that condition. I mean aside from the fact that the cell stank, there was no mattress to sleep on. We were expected to sleep on the metal bed frame that barely had any space for an average-sized person. I wondered if her back doesn't hurt from sleeping on something like that. Then again it probably isn't her first time in a cell.
I looked down at my legs. They were covered with four days worth of dirt. I mean even if I had been told to use the shower in this place I would have respectfully declined.
My stomach growled loudly. The last food I ate was the burrito Ashley had somehow sneaked in for me yesterday when she visited. And even though they had served us food last night, I couldn’t even touch the spoon. The food didn’t look edible and the at brought a huge smile to my cell mate’s face ‘cause she was quick to add my portion to hers.
I looked at the tiny slit on the wall that was supposed to serve as a window, it was still dark outside. I was waiting impatiently for dawn. Ashley was supposed to come to bail me out today. She promised she would be here early with the money.
Now my debt is gonna increase my twenty-five hundred dollars.
After what felt like years, dawn finally broke. I watched as cops on morning duty resumed work while the ones on night duty left work for their houses probably.
I glanced at my cellmate, she was still asleep and I don’t think she was gonna be up anytime soon.
“Good morning A.” Harry, one of the nice officers here greeted me. Harry’s looks were better than the average man and he looked to be in his late twenties. He had been nice to me since I got here and even turns a blind eye whenever Ashley brings me food.
“Morning H. You had a good night's rest I suppose?.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“It was better than most days.”
I sighed. “At least one of us got to rest.”
“You’ve been granted bail I’m sure you would be leaving here soon.”
“Yeah. I really can’t wait.”
He chuckled. “I’m sure it’s not that bad.”
“Of course, you would think that. You stay on the other side of these bars.”
A police officer walked into the office and Harry greeted him with a small bow, his hands were behind his back. I guess this man is of a higher rank than him.
He walked towards the cell doors and stopped just a few meters away.
“Are you Ayva Williams?.” He asked. I nodded my head slowly wondering what he was about to do with that piece of information.
“You are free to go.” He said and pushed a button on the wall. The cell gates slid open.
I almost jumped up in happiness but when I realized I was twenty-five hundred dollars more broke, I contained it. I stepped out and the gates closed back. My cellmate was still asleep I wonder how she could still be sleeping after all that noise. I would have loved to say goodbye to her but unfortunately, I couldn’t. I could only imagine how she would react when she woke up and hear that I’d be bailed out.
I looked around the large room that had numerous desks and chairs. Only a few of the chairs were empty, the rest were occupied by police officers, each sitting in front of their desks.
A frown appeared on my face when I couldn’t find Ashley anywhere.
“Where is she?.” I asked the officer.
“What do you mean miss.”
“The girl who bailed me out?.” I asked
“You mean the young man? He should be outside.” He replied before going to sit at his desk.
My frown got deeper.
Young man?
What was he talking about?
Harry handed me my phone and belongings that were taken from me when I was brought here.
I walked out of the place, I was in a haste to know who the police officer was talking about. I was at the garage. That was where the door I walked out of led me. I looked around, there weren’t many cars around. I didn’t need to check around before knowing there was no one there.
Maybe he meant outside the building, I conclude.
I turned around, about to walk out of the garage but was stopped by the honking of a car. I turned around quickly, startled by the sudden loud noise.
It wasn’t like I had thought, there was someone here.
I suddenly felt chills in my bones as I realized that someone had been watching me all along. I wondered if it was the guy the officer was talking about. I was damn curious to know who this guy was I mean he bailed me out I needed to know if I was gonna be paying him back or not.
I was praying for the latter.
I looked at the few cars around to see which one had someone sitting in it.
And then I saw it.
It was a white 2022 Bentley Bentayga car. Whoever was in the car must be wealthy.
I walked towards it and he got out of the car. It was the least expected person.
“Yusuf?.” I said. The surprise in my voice was evident.
“Ayva hi.” He said and put his hands in his pocket.
“What are you doing here?.”
“I came to pick you up.” He said.
“Wait, are you the one who paid for—.” I trailed off.
“Uhm about that, I had to do something. I’m sorry it took this long but I never agreed with what Adonis did. We all know he overreacted. I’m sorry he treated you that way.”
I was speechless. I stared at him like he had two heads.
Why was this guy acting like we were friends?
“I’m sorry what? Why did you bail me out? Does that mean I have to pay you back?” I had loads of questions.
“I already told you. I don’t agree with what Adonis did. Neither of us did. He could overreact sometimes. And no you don’t have to pay me back.”
“What if I want to?.” I don’t know if just feels weird having Arsen’s friends help me out in this way.
“Please don’t. Please let me do this one time. I could have stopped him from calling the cops but I didn’t, and that makes me feel horrible. This is the only way I could not feel that way again.”
I didn’t know what to say. I looked towards to entrance to see if anyone was coming in before looking back at him.
“Uhm okay. I guess I should thank you.” I said awkwardly.
