Chapter 10: His first battle

1100 Words
“I will keep that in mind.” Nathaniel stared at Ark for a few seconds before responding. Ark walked away from Nathaniel and led the group up front. They arrived at the park after an hour. They arrived rather quickly because the camp site where they were from was near where the park was. Nathaniel was holding the dagger in his hand while playing with it when he suddenly felt his body shiver. It was only for a short moment but he really felt it. He unconsciously placed his other hand on his chest. “What’s wrong? Something wrong with your body?” Ark asked. Nathaniel faced him and shook his head. Ark was observing Nathaniel from behind while waiting for the signal that would come from the camp if ever the monster was spotted near their location. “I’m alright.” Nathaniel assured but Ark didn’t have the time to pay attention to what Nathaniel said because the device that Mr. Lowell gave him communication and it started to ring so loud that it echoed through the quiet park. “I guess the monster is here.” Ark and the others whispered… However, contrary to their expectations, the device didn’t ring because of the monster being nearby. “This is Special Forces’ team captain, Ark.” Ark spoke through the device. “Ark, come back here right now! The monster appeared at the center of the city and created havoc. As of now there are a lot of injured soldiers and civilians, the casualties kept increasing too! This is an order! Go back to this instant!!!” The voice coming from the device sounded so desperate and panic could also be heard. It was the first time for all of them to hear that kind of tone from Mr. Lowell who was always level-headed. “Copy, sir. Returning to base right now.” Ark answered and put the device back into his pocket. “You heard him boys. We’ll run full speed back to the campsite and as soon as we get there prepare for battle immediately.” Ark ordered as they started grabbing their weapons and ran back to the campsite. Ark slowed his pace down so he could match Nathaniel’s. “Run at your own pace. No need to force yourself to match ours.” Ark said before running ahead of everyone. There was a reason why he was the team captain, and that is because he holds the most power out of everyone in their group. Nathaniel gritted his teeth and ran as fast as he could making sure that he didn't get left behind. Even though he felt his heart hurting and beating so fast as if it would come out of his chest at any moment, he ran. He ran and ran and ran until they arrived at the campsite. After they arrived, the soldiers and other personnels left at the campsite were already in a state of panic. It was a mess with all the people running around in every direction and the occasional yelling here and there. Amidst the chaos, Mr. Lowell came running to them while catching his breath. “Special forces go to the center of the city right away.” He turned the tablet in his hands so they would see what was on the screen. “This is the specific location. The damage done in this location has become considerably big in a matter of minutes and the residents in that area are currently under evacuation so we can’t fight as best we can right now. Our priority is evacuation before fighting. I repeat our priority is evacuation before fighting at the center of the city!” Mr. Lowell explained the general idea to them and because they already knew what to do, the special forces immediately moved. Nathaniel gripped his dagger tightly, ‘I knew it, it was there.’ He thought as his face crumpled into a frown and glare. He was about to prepare but Mr. Lowell spoke, making him stop. “In the end, your intuition is correct.” Mr. Lowell whispered with his head hanging low. His voice sounded so sorry and guilty. “There is no use regretting it now. We should do the thing that we can right now and do it in the best way possible. If we don’t want any more casualties that is.” Nathaniel said before grabbing his massive backpack on the ground and putting on the straps in each of his shoulders and running towards the direction of where the monster was. Mr. Lowell watched Nathaniel’s back until he couldn’t see it anymore. He was frowning that anyone who saw him would definitely think that he was angry and pissed, which made the people seeing his expression wanting to avoid him at all cost. “How could he rush to where the monster is even though knowing his situation and current condition.” Mr. Lowell gritted his teeth and looked down on the ground. Yesterday after he left President Martin’s office, he went to re-investigate everything about Nathaniel and he found out in the process of his investigation that Nathaniel may only have another year to live. Mr. Lowell thought that him only having another year to live made sense because every time he visits the factory he always sees Nathaniel coughing hard that made him throw up the little food he ate and it also led sometimes to him coughing out blood. Mr. Lowell shook his head and went inside one of the tents where the monitoring team was busy doing their jobs. As soon as he opened the flap one of the monitoring members rushed to him and shouted so loud that everyone's attention to them. “Sir, the monster is currently on the move!” “What?! The monster who was creating havoc in the center of the city suddenly moved even though it won’t budge after doing everything just to make it go to an inhabited area?!” Mr. Lowell was flabbergasted. “Where?” He added. His voice was so low that the member of the monitoring team had to ask him to repeat what he just said. “Sir?” “I said where! Where is that monster heading to?!” Mr. Lowell repeated his question with his voice loud and clear. “That… Sir, the truth is… the monster is heading here.” The man said in a low voice but it was enough for Mr Lowell to ask as the silence had reigned over them after he shouted.
