3. Searching for a Luna

1608 Words
Levi POV The muffled sounds coming from outside of my soundproof office were quite easy to ignore. After finishing reading the pack’s weekly reports, I started tossing one of my thousands of stress balls against the wall, paying no mind at all to the noise. Until one sentence, louder than the other mumbles, caught my attention. “You’re already 26, and this pack needs a Luna!” my beta screamed, banging his fists on the door. “If you don’t get your ass off that chair, we’ll be late!” I rolled my eyes, already annoyed. I stopped bouncing the ball, squeezing it in my fists. It popped like a balloon in less than a second; I told the pack doctor they were useless, but he kept saying it’d help control my rage. Bullshit. Just like the pressure everyone was putting on me to find a f*****g Luna. After years, I remained undefeated, defending my pack just fine. In fact, Blood Eclipse has grown more during my reign than it ever had under my father’s. I didn’t need a mate to be strong - in fact, that’s what made me stand out among other lovesick Alphas. “You know I couldn’t care less about finding our mate,” my wolf, Odin, agreed. “But our pack will never be at its best without a Luna. The members know our strength; they respect and fear us. However, they still need a heart; someone who will make them feel safe and heard. As displeased as I am with the situation, we must do it for our pack.” I let out a frustrated grunt before standing up. Most of the time I enjoyed being Alpha, but this was one of those days when I’d rather be rogue. I buttoned up my white t-shirt, grabbed my black jacket, and headed towards the mirror. My light stubble beard was quickly growing in, but I looked presentable enough for a meeting with a smaller pack, so I just went with it. Once I was ready to leave, I realized my Beta still hadn’t stopped slamming his fists against the door. “Finally!” he yelled, scowling at me. “Come on, the driver’s already waiting for us.” Darrell Crawford was my best friend, and the one person I loved to piss off. At twenty-four years old, he was the best warrior of our pack - which made sense, since he was a born Beta. The dark-skinned man had a well-built body, black circle beard, ebony hair, styled in curls and a temple fade, and two enchanted crocodile tooth piercings on his left ear. Having grown up together, we usually got along well, but for the past few days, he was really annoying me. He was the one who came up with the idea to get neighboring packs to show me their best she-wolves, in hopes I’d take a liking to any of them. So far, the candidates had been nothing but futile weaklings, desperate to have a taste of my power. “Please, Levi, bring our Luna home today,” he begged as soon as we got into the limousine. “Sure. If any of them are fitting to stand by my side.” “Moonstone is the last pack that agreed to offer us one of their best women.” He sighed, massaging his temples. “If you come back empty-handed, everyone will be disappointed. Just try to make an effort.” “I’ll try.” I showed him my most sarcastic smile making him roll his eyes at me. This was his idea in the first place, so if I was unhappy, I’d make sure he would be too. After an hour-long drive, we crossed the borders of Moonstone Pack. The territory wasn’t as large as mine, and the buildings were pretty simple. I doubted my perfect Luna would be in such a place, but I’d just have to go with it. The Alpha and Beta of the pack received us at the entrance. Kai had just stepped in as the new leader; he was young, and from the amount of rubbish he was talking, I could tell he was also foolish. As we made our way towards the lounge where the girls were waiting, he tried to impress me with some of his irrelevant conquests. Pathetic. “Well, here we are,” the boy said as he opened the door. “These are our finest she-wolves. I’m sure you’ll find a worthy chosen mate among them.” As soon as I took my first step in, a strong scent hit me. It was intense, like dark coffee being brewed in the morning, spiced up with cinnamon. Although strong, it also had a hint of the whitest, purest blooming lily - so innocent and green. I closed my eyes for a second, dwelling on the scent until it dawned on me. I turned my head in the direction of the fragrance, my gaze instantly falling on a poorly dressed she-wolf with a worn-out expression. Her beautiful honey eyes were full of hope - and it disgusted me. She knew who I was, and it obviously meant trouble. I growled in anger, trying to resist my urge to pin her on the floor and make her mine while everyone watched. Were those my thoughts? “Odin, control yourself!” I told my wolf furiously. “You know we can’t have a mate! It’ll make us weak! I should probably reject her right now and put an end to this.” “Wait! Don’t!” His tone was a little more desperate than I would like, but I decided to hear what he had to say. “This is actually perfect. Having our real mate will be better than taking a chosen one.” “Enlighten me.” “Her soul is tied to ours, which will make it easier for her to obey us. Also, if the Moon Goddess paired her with us, it means she was born to be a Luna. She will be the best for our pack.” As much as I wanted to disagree with him, I knew there was truth in his words. This wasn’t the outcome I was expecting, but it would put an end to my problems, and that was enough for me. Unaware of what was happening, everyone eyed me with expectation, waiting for me to pick one of the girls on display. “I have found my mate,” I announced at last. The girl’s eyes shone brighter than ever as she flashed me a sweet smile, but I didn’t bother returning the gesture. I tried to approach her so we could go home and finally be at peace, but the sorry excuse of an Alpha got in my way. “This is wonderful news, Alpha Levi! I am sure my sister Chloe will serve you well.” He waved his hand in the direction of a girl in the center wearing the most extravagant dress. Pretty, but too much of an attention-seeker. “This is not the woman I chose,” I growled, finding it hard to remain calm. Then, I pointed at my mate with my head. “This is the one I’ll be taking home with me.” Both the Alpha and his sister widened their eyes in horror. I ignored them, trying to make my way towards the poorly-dressed girl. Kai dared interrupt me again, and this time, I showed him my canines. He shivered, but didn’t move. This guy was getting on my nerves. “Alpha Levi, I advise you to reconsider. This girl is just a Delta of weak blood,” he spat, and a part of me wanted to twist his neck for speaking ill of my mate. “My sister is a born Alpha. No one will make a better Luna for you than her.” “Really?” I barked, almost giving in to my anger. “I believe the Goddess doesn’t think so. This girl is my true mate.” Once again, they gasped in shock, but didn’t try to stop me again. Wise choice. As I crossed the distance between me and the girl, I looked at Kai over my shoulder. “There is nothing left for me to do here. I’ll take my mate and leave,” I declared, but the Alpha was still too speechless to respond. When I finally reached the mysterious girl, I took a second to quickly analyze her. She was tall, but I still towered over her. Despite her dirty clothes and tired look, I had to admit she was beautiful. And when her golden eyes locked on mine, my lips parted as I suspired in delight. But I abruptly shook my head, remembering to stay focused. “What’s your name?” I asked her calmly. “Calliope, Alpha Levi,” she replied promptly, bowing respectfully at me. “Calliope…” I repeated, and Odin purred in my head when her name left our lips. “Come with me.” I turned around to leave, knowing the longer I stared at her, the harder it would be to control myself. But when I noticed she still wasn’t following me, clearly confused by my attitude, it annoyed me. “I said come,” I repeated firmly, almost growling. Like a good Delta, she didn’t utter a word as we walked to the car. Both her and my Beta remained quiet as I thought about the situation. I hoped she wouldn’t give me a hard time, but if she did, I’d waste no time disciplining her.
