Cal POV
Through my wolf’s eyes, I saw the pearly-white teeth of the ebony wolf coming for us. With a swift jump, Nava manages to escape her opponent’s jaws by just a few inches.
At Moonstone, we trained three times a week, two hours each day. For the first sixty minutes, the warriors dueled in human form, repeating the process in wolf form during the second half of sparring.
Delta is the only rank that can be occupied by either men or women - all other positions were reserved for males only, following the rules of our patriarchal society. In Moonstone, females weren’t allowed to become warriors either, so I was always the only girl in training. And my rank required me to be just as strong as any of the males.
As much as I hated to admit it, fighting males when you’re a female isn’t a walk in the park. We are naturally smaller and possess less physical strength - a difference that became even more noticeable in wolf form. Being the Delta, I had to train two times harder than the other warriors to match their attributes.
However, after three years of training, I had learned to turn my weaknesses into strengths.
My snowy-white she-wolf had her shiny golden eyes locked on our opponent - Jax, our Gamma Gregor’s wolf. She studied him carefully, trying to read his next movement. Males were usually guided by their anger, so staying calm and collected offered us an advantage.
The two wolves circled each other in a slow, cautious dance, but as expected, it didn’t take long for Jax to lunge in our direction. Attentive, Nava easily ducked, watching as the adversary flew over her. For us, every second mattered, and without wasting time, my she-wolf jumped on top of the fallen wolf, pinning him to the ground.
The dark-furred beast struggled for a while, but with our open mouth around his jugular, he had little chance to escape. He let out an annoyed growl before he gave up, shifting back into his human form. Nava stepped back, allowing Gregor to stand up. He flashed us a look of pure fury - I knew it too well; it was the death-stare every male gave me whenever I managed to beat them.
“That’s not fair! You’re fighting dirty!” There it was - the same excuse they always used.
Before I could defend myself, something hit my wolf on the side, unexpectedly throwing her to the ground. I quickly noticed it was our Beta’s counterpart, Marley. When Nava tried to stand back up, the other wolf pressed his paw against her muzzle, preventing her from moving. He flashed us a wolfish grin before Elliot took his place.
“You know you’re not allowed to just dodge, Cal.” What? I fought the urge to roll my eyes; he had just made that up. “In the event of an actual attack, are you gonna keep running while the others do all the work for you?” He snickered, lowering himself to stare into my wolf’s intense eyes. “The only place you can get dirty is in bed. With me. Now that’s something I’d like to see.”
Filled with disgust, Nava struggled to be released, taking a few steps back. She wanted to growl at him, but being a good Delta, she couldn’t disrespect her superiors. Both boys laughed at my she-wolf’s reaction. I hoped they’d let me go, but I was obviously wrong.
“Come on, training is over.” Elliot clapped his hands, and soon everyone started to leave the training grounds.
The Beta was also in charge of conducting training, so all of the warriors respected him. Soon enough, everyone was gone, and the three of us were the only wolves left. Once again, Elliot approached me. I backed away, trying to stay clear of his dirty hands.
“Why don’t you shift back like everyone else, Cal?” My eyes widened in horror at his insinuation.
In order to avoid being seen by these horny unmated males, I’d hide before assuming my human form. As the Gamma and Beta stood there in front of me, completely naked, I prayed it was just a joke.
“Your Beta gave you an order. What are you waiting for?” Gregor smiled mischievously.
I looked around me, looking for a way out, but there was none. Closing my eyes hesitantly, I realized I’d have to endure the humiliation one more time. Nervously, I took a deep breath. At least, I’d go through it with my head held high.
Nava allowed me back control, and little by little, our bones began to shrink and break. Shifting was a painful process, but after doing it so many times, I had gotten used to it. As soon as I was back to my human form, I felt the men’s gazes on me. My heart was beating fast, but I tried to remain calm as I stared at the wall, not wanting to give them the confidence of looking into their eyes.
It didn’t take long for them to start circling me like sharks.
“You’re hot, Cal,” Elliot cooed. I closed my eyes when he inched closer, but thankfully, he didn’t touch me. “Your place is not here, damaging that pretty body of yours. It’d suit you a lot more being in a strong man’s bed, producing heirs.”
Once again, I felt my blood boil with rage. The voice in the back of my head screamed fight back! louder than ever. As I felt the Beta’s hot breath on my neck, I closed my eyes, concealing my rage. An animalistic growl threatened to escape my throat, my wolf blinded with fury at the rude comment. But before I could do anything, I heard a voice inside my head.
“Where the f**k are you, Cal? I need you in my office!” Kai roared impatiently, closing our connection before I could even reply.
For the first time in my life, I was actually grateful for him; he had just offered me an escape.
“The Alpha wishes to see me.” My voice was barely a whisper as I tried to control my ragged breathing. “I’m sorry, I need to go.”
I rushed out of the gym, warm tears streaming down my face; it was too much for me to take.
My clothes were in a backpack under the shade of a tree; I always left them there, so I could change without being seen. I was shaking as I put them on, sliding my back down the trunk until I was sitting in the dirt. Kai would be mad at me for taking so long, but I needed a few seconds to breathe. My heart was beating fast and the tears didn’t seem to stop coming.
“It’s okay, Cal. You were brave,” my wolf kindly reassured me. Her sweet voice, soft like cotton, helped tranquilize me. “You didn’t let them see you cry. You held your head up high, and you got through it. You’re strong.”
“I’m weak!” I snapped. “That’s why they’re always messing with me. Because I’m weak.”
“The sole fact that you got through this hell alone day after day before I came along proves you’re tough. Not many are capable of that.”
Nava’s presence always made me feel calm during my breakdowns. She was my best friend - my only friend - and I have no idea how I managed to survive so long without her. Even if I didn’t completely trust her words, they helped ease my tension away. It didn’t take long before I was back up to my feet, wiping the sweat and tears off my face as I made my way towards the packhouse.
When I reached the Alpha’s office, I knocked. He angrily told me to come in. My eyes instantly fell on the she-wolf sitting on his desk - Chloe, his sister. Her Alpha genetics helped her grow into a beautiful girl. At the peak of her nineteen years, she had a tall, curvy build, chocolate brown eyes, and shiny ebony hair. She was probably the prettiest she-wolf in the pack. Not that great of a personality, but definitely better than her brother’s.
“Finally! What took you so long?” Kai grumbled.
“I…” I started, but he instantly facepalmed.
“It was a rhetorical question. I really couldn’t care less.” Today he was definitely in a worse mood than usual. “Listen up, Cal. As you have been told, Alpha Levi of Blood Eclipse will be visiting us tonight. He’s searching for a Luna, and we were one of the lucky packs chosen to show him our best females. I believe you already have the list of the seven she-wolves that must get ready to meet him today.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Great. But here’s the deal…” He smirked before turning to his sister. “You must make sure Chloe is the one he picks. Get her the best dress, find her the best hair stylist, and make-up artist. Levi’s a picky man; he has turned down every she-wolf he’s met so far, but none of them had Alpha blood. If we can get him to marry my sister, we’ll be able to establish an alliance with them.”
The Blood Eclipse Pack was one of the most gruesome packs to ever exist. It had grown a lot ever since their Alpha, Levi Griffon, took over. He went on a rampage for the first two years of his rule, taking down other leaders and absorbing other packs. He was also a ruthless Alpha, known to have killed every member who dared disrespect him. It was a long list of names, and no one knew exactly how many wolves he had murdered.
“Make sure to get those bath salts, too. They make my skin healthy and shiny,” Chloe added, pulling me from my thoughts. She was too smiley for someone who was basically a peace offering to a serial killer.
“Yes, Chloe. Alpha.” I bowed at them before excusing myself.
It was a lot of work to do. The Delta was responsible for taking care of every background detail and ensuring the pack would always run smoothly. During big events, I was the one in charge of the preparations - a hard task to do alone.
As always, I managed to get everything done at the cost of my exhaustion. By the evening, the seven chosen she-wolves were dressed in beautiful gowns, though the most outstanding one belonged to Chloe. She was pretty as a picture, while I was a wreck. But it didn’t matter. I wasn’t supposed to be the center of attention, she was.
The young girls were all standing in line at the lounge, waiting for the Alpha of Blood Eclipse to arrive. While Kai and his father drank some good quality wine with the Beta and Gamma, I ran around the place taking care of the final details. Before long, our special guest finally walked through the door.
And as soon as he did, my eyes locked on him. I had never paid much attention to boys, but this man looked incredibly attractive. He was very tall - probably around 6’3’’ - and his muscular body could be seen through his white t-shirt. His dark blonde hair, almost a metallic gray, was wildly spiked up. When his icy blue eyes fell over me, I stiffened.
“Mate!” My wolf howled in delight.
