Kayla was actually enjoying her job as a senior lifeguard. The clever girl told the lady in charge of teaching a swim class for the little kids that she was going to supervise as she needed to write a report on her efficiency. The reality was that Kayla needed to learn how to swim, so getting in the shallow end of the pool with toddlers gave her the opportunity to learn the basics. During the hours outside of her shifts, she accessed first-aid and lifeguard training videos from a terminal in her room. By the end of that first week, she was so confident in her new role that she felt ready to jump in at the first sign of trouble. Fortunately, there wasn't anything more drastic than some boys who had to be called out not to run around the pool. I, on the other hand, was bored to tears.
