MERRICK
Asher was one pissed off Alpha, and it was getting harder by the minute to calm him down. This wasn’t because we had died and were brought back, it was because the man who had us killed was always there, staring at us when he was – now we f*****g knew the plans that he was scheming – pretending to have our best interest at heart, but he was nothing but a f*****g bastard.
“You need to calm the f**k down, Ash,” I told my brother, who was speeding the car in a hurry to get to the courthouse.
I glanced at him to see him huff but not slow the car and I braced myself, knowing he wasn’t going to stop on my account.
“We f*****g need to get there before Lance f*****g does...” was all that he said to me. Sure, but do we have to die first? And again too?
I understood his concerns but, unlike me, Asher wanted to get rid of the problem that cost us our lives this instant without any form of strategy.
We made it after some time and Asher bolted out of the car before I could speak to him about how we should approach the situation.
He even left the car running and I had to turn it off. “You’re f*****g wasting time, Merrick...” He called out to me but not stopping in his tracks as he made it for the door. Sure, run along and leave the car running.
I sighed and shook my head, leaving the car behind and jogging towards him to catch up to his long strides.
A few people recognized who we were and, unlike others who had to wait to make an appointment, Asher and I didn’t need to bother with that.
Instead, we walked right past the reception in search of who we needed to see before our Uncle got here, and the receptionist didn’t even bother stopping us.
We looked for a good two minutes before finding Simon’s office. He was what I thought a friend was because of how close he was to our father, but our past life made it clear that he was nothing but a f*****g snake. Just as Lance was.
Being brothers with the Alpha King, Lance always wanted a throne that could never be his, considering the Alpha King not only had a son but two.
However, he was what I knew to be a greedy bastard who was set out against all odds to have it despite us being around to take over when our father – the same he accused us of killing – died.
“He’s not here,” I told Asher, and he grunted in annoyance. What?
The purpose of our meeting today was to make sure that a meeting between Lance and Simon wasn’t held. We had come to realize before our death, today was the day they had their first meeting and where all the plans and scheming against the throne started.
If it never happened and a contract was never signed, it would mean that the meeting wouldn’t be held, right?
We were here to stop it, but upon opening the door to the man’s conference room, we found him dead, lying in his own pool of blood that he seemed to have chocked on.
“f**k!” I exclaimed at the sight of him. This wasn’t supposed to have happened and yet it did. It seemed like someone beat us to it, but that left a question or two as to who did and why.
Asher and I exchanged looks and I could see the relief in his eyes and expression while he saw the unsettling ones in my eyes.
Something was wrong, and he could tell like I could.
We moved away, making sure not to step foot into the office before Asher called out to the secretary, who ended up filling our ears with a scream.
Simon died before we had arrived, and she swore that she never saw him leave, since she never left her table.
“What do you mean you didn’t know?” I practically yelled at the woman who shook in her boots almost like she was about to pass out.
“He...I... Forgive me my prince. I swear I don’t know how he died....” This was messed up and I didn’t like it. “....he made it clear to be left alone, and I did like he asked. I swear, I know nothing.” You're smart enough to tell the truth.
She was telling the truth. I could sense that, but I hated that Simon could have killed himself, and now we were left to find out why.
Asher walked past me and headed for the office. I wanted to go after him, but I remained where I stood, watching the staff that had now gathered. They all stared with questioning eyes, not to mention the confusion that rested in them, but they knew too well not to ask the wrong questions. And maybe my cold expression was what kept their lips sealed.
“Rick, check this out...” Asher emerged from the office holding a folder in his hand. I peeled my eyes from the bunch and walked over to him, taking the folder from him. “They have his signature already....” Asher pointed at the spot and, indeed, it was our Uncle’s signature resting on the paper. I knew it.
“He was waiting for Simon’s...” I finished whatever thought he was having, knowing they were the same as mine.
Simon had killed himself before signing the contract with Lance, and now we had to find out why he did so.
These documents were to allow them to forge documents that were owned by our parents in order for Lance to have ownership. And if he had gotten his hands on them, everything our father ever had possession of and worked hard for would have been ruined.
In our last lives, in order to get rid of our entire family, Lance ordered a hit on our parents only to frame us for being the killers with solid proof that was shocking even for us.
He assumed the position of Alpha King, and he ordered for us to be locked up. And when he realized that we would be out sooner than he would have wanted, he banished us. And as if that wasn't enough, he sent his men out to hunt us down before we could even have the chance to defend ourselves.
Asher and I made it outside the office and headed for our car, leaving Simon’s secretary to call the local authorities to get his body out of the office. When they arrived, they stopped by to question us about what happened and while we spoke to the officers, I felt a tugging in my chest.
It was a pain of some sort and I didn’t know where it was coming from. My wolf became instantly restless, pulling and clawing at the back of my mind in a way that got on my nerves. Goddess, what now?
I turned to Asher to ask if he felt the same way, but he was too engrossed in what was going on to even notice anything.
My body spun around and when I decided I was going to feed my eyes with my surroundings instead, hoping to get something to push my mind off what was going on to me, they landed on a woman making my wolf howl in excitement.
“Mate! We found mate!” he voiced excitedly and a relief I didn’t know I needed to feel washed over me.
I grabbed Asher by the arm, my eyes never leaving her until I felt him follow my gaze.
Before us was a woman more beautiful than any other arguing with a man, and she seemed to be in pain. I didn’t... We both didn’t know who she was, but the sight of her being screamed at had us both growling lowly and dangerously.
“He dares touch our mate like that and hurt her!” my voice came out angrier than I intended, but it didn’t matter to me. All I wanted was to get her away from him and safe with us.
Asher was a step ahead of me and my strides grew longer to catch up with him. A little closer to an arms reach, and we were to her, holding onto her in order to stop her from falling because she was trying to move away from the bastard.
Our bond sparked into life at that moment, letting us both confirm that she was indeed our mate.
I expected her to be as happy as we were, to be pleased to have found us, but she was acting distant, like a she-wolf oblivious of the fact that her mates were right in front of her.
She stared at us both for a fraction of another second before snapping out of it and backing away, causing my heart to break a little.
I frowned, not happy that she was a few inches away from us, but Asher spoke with a knowledge I should have realized.
“Her senses are blocked for some reason, that’s why she doesn’t know that we’re her mates.” He spoke to me through our twin link. That was when my brows relaxed from their crease and the realization hit me. Then why the f**k is this man grabbing onto her like he owned her or something? Not even a second later, after the question dropped into my mind, Asher frowned even more and his face contorted into anger. "She's also the b***h who hurt me a year into our past lives." Well s**t. Now this is messed up.
