Chapter 7
“So what would you like to eat?” Val asks me as he places his hand on the small of my back.
“Um… I don’t know. I haven’t ever ate out at a restaurant. I was only allowed to eat at home. Even during pack events I wasn’t allowed to eat at the function, so I had to eat before or after at home.” I say shily as I look at the ground.
“Wow. That sucks, I am sorry for that. We have plenty of options here, so in reality you don’t even need to eat at home if you don’t want to.” He says with a soft smile.
“So, why don’t you take to a place that you like?” I say as I look around at the stores and restaurant’s.
This place is amazing. It is so beautiful here.
“Okay,” he says as he looks around like he is deciding on a place.
He smiles as he pushes on my back to lead me in the direction he wanted me to start walking in.
After walking five blocks down the road. We stop in front of a restaurant called Ma’s kitchen.
“This place is amazing, I have never gotten something that wasn’t good here. It’s a smaller restaurant and is run by an older woman.
She was knows as Ma by most everyone here. She used to run the orphanage in town, so all the children knew her as Ma and that has
been going on for so many years, we have all started calling her Ma. She opened this place ten years ago when her daughter took over the orphanage for her.” Val explains to me as we walk through the door and over to a table in the far corner.
We sit across from each other as I look around and notice that there is only ten tables in here.
“Why so few tables if the food is so good?” I ask looking at Val.
“That would be because I can only handle taking so many tables myself.” An older woman says as she walks over to our table.
“Oh, that’s a good number of tables then.” I say with a soft smile.
“Yes it is. Now Prince Val, who is this lovely woman that you have brought into my restaurant?” She asks looking at Val with a
knowing smile.
“Ma, this is Chloe. She is my mate, and she has never ate at a restaurant before.” Val says looking over at me.
“Oh my poor thing. Well you will have to come back, so you can try something different. What would you like to eat today?” Ma asks me with a soft, pity smile.
Great now she feels bad for me, I say to myself.
“I don’t see a menu or anything. What do you have?” I ask Ma.
She laughs softly before saying, “What sounds good to you? I do not have a menu. I make everything as it is ordered. So it
sometimes takes a little while.”
“I don’t have a favorite food. Didn’t have many options when I was growing up. What is your favorite? Can you make that for me.” I
say.
“Sure thing, I will make my favorite for you. And Prince, what would you like today?” She asks making a note on her pad.
“I’ll have the same thing.” He says with a smile. She makes a note before walking off into the kitchen.
Val reaches across and poors me a glass of water, from the pitcher that is sitting in the middle of the table.
“Thank you,” I say as I reach and grab the glass and taking a drink.
“Why was your childhood so bad?” He asks me before taking a sip of his own water.
“Short story is my parents hate me for something that I had no control over. I did not kill my brother and I didn’t make my mom
unable to have any more children. So they just kept me at home and away from everyone for the most part. They always ate at the packhouse, so I would only have minimum options for food.” I say with a shrug.
“Your parents are evil and yet you call me the monster.” He says with a chuckle.
“What they have done to me is nothing compared to the horror stories I have heard about you.” I say getting a little angry at someone else putting my parents down.
“Stories, have you even asked me the truth? Do you want to know the truth?” He says with a low growl.
“There will be none of that in Ma’s.” Ma says as she walks over and sets a large cast iron pan in the middle of the table.
My mouth waters as I look at the full plate in front of me. It is chips on the bottom, topped and layered with chicken and cheese.
Then that is topped with sour cream, tomatoes and onions and peppers. It looks amazing and I don’t even know what it is.
“What is that?” I ask looking up with her.
“This my dear, is chicken nachos. You scoop with the chip and you take big messy bites of goodness.” Ma says with a smile.
I reach out and grab a chip that has a little of everything on it. I put it into my mouth and eat it.
“Oh my Goddess. This is the best thing ever. Thank you so much.” I say jumping up to hug her.
“Your welcome my dear. Now enjoy your nachos. And Congratulations Prince on finding your mate. And Chole congrats to you as well.” Ma says as she walks away.
Val and I eat in silence. I enjoy my food and I know I am making a mess, but so is Val so it must be how its supposed to be.
