Alpha Sebastian’s POV
“You don’t know who you are?” I ask, furrowing my brows as I try to take all of this in.
She brings her shaking hand up to her head and holds it there for a moment as if trying to reach the memories buried deep within.
It appears she is unsuccessful as she then begins to cry uncontrollably.
It hurts to see anyone in this much distress but with her, it’s as though her emotions and mine are one in the same. I’d do anything to take this pain away from her.
“You don’t even know your name?” I ask again to clarify, my brain still trying to comprehend.
It is then that her sadness turns to anger at the flip of a switch and her eyes dart up to glower at me.
“NO!! WHAT DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND!!? STOP ASKING ME! she yells, tossing the plastic cup of water down on the floor. “PLEASE!!”
“Okay…okay. I won’t ask anymore. I promise.” I state, raising my hands in surrender.
I stay silent for a moment as she shakes her head from side to side gently, her hand balling into a fist which she begins to knock against her temple.
“Don’t do that… you’ll hurt yourself.” I say, rising up from the chair to put my hand out towards her.
She continues to hit her hand against her head with increasing force, her sobbing getting louder and louder each time.
“Stop.” I demand gently, wrapping my hand around her wrist.
“DON’T TOUCH ME!” she screams, instantly trying to pull her arm from my grip, her red, puffy eyes looking up into mine.
“I’m sorry, I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable but I can’t let you hurt yourself. Im here to protect you, remember?” I ask, resting my other hand on her cheek gently.
She gradually stops struggling against me and closes her eyes slowly as the sparks fly between us.
My touch seems to calm her down and as soon as she stops moving, I remove my hands and sit back down in the chair.
She rubs her eyes quickly and looks down at the floor in silence.
“Can I get you something to eat? Can I get you anything at all?”
“I just want to be alone… please leave me alone.” she whispers sadly.
I can’t deny that her words sting but I’m not stupid enough to take them personally.
She’s clearly been through hell. A hell that I can’t even begin to imagine.
“I want to watch over you… can I stay? I promise I won’t ask you anything else.” I say sincerely.
She lifts her head to look at me and I watch as her eyes flick over me slowly.
She’s trying to work me out. To sense if I’m a threat or not.
Eventually she nods her head and lies back down on the bed, facing away in the opposite direction.
I stare helplessly at the back of her head, her golden hair spayed over the pillow wildly.
All I want to do is hold her. To console her, to help her feel better and so far all I’ve managed to do is make things worse.
I lean back in the chair and there is silence for a few moments before her voice comes out of the blue.
“Sorry I yelled at you.” she whispers quietly.
“It’s okay, you’ve got nothing to be sorry about..” I reply reassuringly.
After a few minutes have passed, I hear her breathing even out and I know then that she has fallen fast asleep.
I let out a puff of air and rub my finger tips over my aching forehead.
Not only does she not remember what happened to her but she doesn’t remember who she is?
This whole thing just became so much more complicated and I literally have no idea where to start.
What the f**k am I going to do now?
I stand up carefully and make my way out into the corridor where the doctor is waiting anxiously.
“Are you okay?” I ask him, taking in the bruises that have appeared on his neck.
“Yes Alpha thank you… she caught me off guard. It’s good to know that she is getting strength back. Although it seems as though exhaustion has taken over again.” he answers, nodding his head towards the room.
“Doctor she doesn’t remember anything… she doesn’t even know who she is.” I say firmly, examining his face as it contorts in confusion. “Is that even possible? What the hell is going on?” I ask him impatiently.
He brings his hand to his chin as he considers his response.
“I have never worked with a memory loss patient before… she has no apparent head injuries. It could be psychological.” he states with uncertainty.
“As in she has blocked it out?” I ask in return.
“Yes exactly, we will have to call in a specialist. There’s only one doctor that comes to mind. Dr Nina Walters. She’s the best in her field. I can give her a call and ask her to come-“
“Do it.” I respond instantly, turning to look back through the window at my mate’s sleeping form.
“There’s only one problem… she is based out of Coldridge…”
“Shit.” I reply quickly, castings my eyes back to him where he is waiting for my orders.
“Go ahead… call the specialist. I’ll deal with Alpha Ivan.” I say determinedly.
“Very well… she should be fine for now. I’ll have nurses keep her under constant watch.” the doctor says as I open the door.
“It’s fine… I’ll be here anyway.” I reply before making my way back inside.
***
“Seb…”
I open my eyes and wince as I stare up at the blurry shadow above.
“Dan?”
“Yeah man… you doing alright?” he asks as I lean off of the bed and stretch out my limbs.
“Fine… what time is it?” I ask, my eyes finding my way back to my mate as she lies in the very same spot.
“It’s 7am… we just arrived. Aiden and Natalia are here too.”
“You should have told them not to come Dan.” I state as I stand up from the uncomfortable chair.
“Pfft yeah right… you try telling your brother what to do… see how far it gets you.” he replies with a chuckle.
I make my way towards the door as he looks towards the bed curiously.
“How is she? Has she woken up yet?”
“I’ll fill you in. Where is Aiden?”
“Waiting room.”
I see Natalia first as she rushes towards me, throwing her arms around my neck and pulling me into a tight hug.
“Oh Sebastian… I don’t really know what to say.” she says worriedly as I pat her back in return.
“It’s alright. Listen you guys didn’t have to come all this way.”
“I wanted to. Call it making up for lost time.” Aiden’s says coming up behind me.
I turn to him and he slaps his hand against mine before patting my back firmly.
I spend the next few minutes explaining the whole situation to them.
Her reaction when she woke up. The amnesia, the specialist. Everything.
All the while they listen intently and nod along.
“So what happens now?” Dan asks when I am finished.
“Well, hopefully this specialist can help and we can figure out what’s going on. I’ll look after her until she is better.” I reply firmly.
It is then that I notice them looking at each other cautiously with worried expressions.
“What? What do you have to say?” I ask them, folding my arms over my chest.
“What about her family? … Shouldn’t you reach out to nearby packs and ask if anyone is missing?” Aiden replies, his eyes looking into mine intently.
I shake my head stubbornly in response.
“No way… she was running away from something! She’s terrified out of her damn mind-“
“True but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have people who care for her out there. Perhaps parents… or even her mate-“
My already frayed nerves snap and I grit my teeth in fury.
“f*****g stop right there… the doctor said her mate is surely dead and even if there was one out there, it could be him that she’s running from! There’s no way I’ll take that chance.”
“But Seb-“
“I SAID NO.” I interrupt forcefully as the three of them fall into silence.
Anger inside me begins to build and I decide to walk away before I fire it in the wrong direction.
No matter how much I want to ignore it, I can’t deny that what they are saying is correct.
Is it really my right to keep her from a family that might be looking for her?
Is that the kind of man that I want to be?
I ask myself the questions but I can’t bare to answer them.
I look through the window at her and my protectiveness refuses to comply with my better judgement.
Just then Natalia comes up and stands beside me quietly, following my line of sight through the treatment room window.
“I snapped at you. I didn’t mean it.” I say apologetically, keeping my face stoic.
“That’s alright… it’s fair to say you’ve had a rough couple of days.” she replies.
“You could say that…”
“Seb… you said that she was afraid earlier, when she woke up… what if I try to speak to her this time? Maybe because I’m a woman, I might have more luck in getting her to open up?”
I nod my head and look towards her hopeful expression.
“I’ll try anything.” I say sincerely.
“Good… because it looks like she’s awake now.” she answers nodding her head towards my drowsy mate who is now sitting herself up in bed.
Anxious feelings rise in my chest when I see her conscious again. My heart wants to go to her but my head is telling me that restraint will be important right now.
It’s all about patience at the minute and I’ll have to try. It will be f*****g difficult but I have to try… for her sake.
“May I? Don’t worry I’ll leave the door open.”Natalia says with a small smile.
I nod before she walks towards the door and opens it to walk inside.
I listen carefully as I watch their meeting unfold in front of me.
“Hi there… I’m sorry to intrude. Can I introduce myself?” Natalia asks softly.
My mate looks around anxiously before she nods her head gently.
Natalia takes a seat by her side slowly.
“Good… my name is Natalia.”
My mate looks away quickly, with sadness in her blue eyes.
“I know that you don’t remember things… it’s okay. We are going to help you. I promise. Sebastian… you remember Sebastian?” she asks carefully, turning around to point at me through the window.
My mates eyes look straight into mine for a moment and I feel as though she’s reaching into my very f*****g soul.
I gulp at the intensity of the feelings that are stirring inside of me.
Eventually she nods her head before looking back at Natalia.
“Good… well Sebastian has arranged for a special doctor to come and help you. She specialises in amnesia so hopefully she will be here soon and she will know what to do.”
There’s silence for a few seconds before Natalia continues.
“Do you mind if I ask Sebastian to bring us some breakfast? I don’t know about you but I’m starving.” she chuckles, rubbing her stomach animatedly.
My mate nods her head and smiles slightly in return. The sight instantly makes my heart jolt in my chest.
Natalia shoots her head towards me in silent order and I nod eagerly in response before turning to go and carry out my orders.
