CHAPTER 44

SECOND CHANCE MATES?

“Nicole, rein in your anger,” Drake commanded, his voice cutting through the charged air, drawing her blazing eyes away from his sons. Causing him to wonder at her sudden outburst. The boys had always harbored a certain hostility towards her, a puzzle that intrigued him. Yet, watching her defiantly challenge them was a new development. Especially, now that they looked like two love-sick puppies, their eyes betraying a mix of fear, regret and possessiveness for her.

“What’s with these boys and Nicole?” he mused internally. “Try to calm down, Nicole. No one is holding you back. You can train, and along the way, we can talk about the other issue.”

“I still want to leave the pack,” Nicole persisted, her anger slowly draining away.

“Okay. I have heard you. Can we talk about that after tonight?” Drake suggested, a hopeful smile playing on his lips. He doubted she would still want to leave after what he was going to do tonight. “Hm?” he gently held both her shoulders. “Please?”

Nicole took a deep breath and nodded. “Yes, Alpha.” She shot a final glare at the twins over his shoulders.

“Thank you,” Drake gushed. “So, tonight…”

“What’s happening tonight?” his sons interjected.

“Stop interrupting me, boys.” he scolded them. “Just wait for tonight to find out.” Turning back to Nicole, he continued, “I wanted to see you about our talk…the hospital incident.”

“I don’t remember anything like I told you,” Nicole lied, praying he wouldn’t alpha-command her, once again wondering if it would work.

“How did you get the mark on your side?”

“I don’t know…I don’t remember. The last thing I recall is the day of my…my…re…rejection.” she whispered the last word, feeling the painful echo of that day.

Behind Drake, Vince and Vance, shot her apologetic looks, offering her their most sober expressions.

“…and waking up in the hospital,” Nicole continued.

Drake sensed the lie but hesitated using his command fear it might hurt her further. Her wolf seemed damaged or in deep hibernation, and using the command could exacerbate her situation, burying her wolf deeper.

“And I still can’t beg you to tell me who the i***t is?”

“No,” she replied, unable to meet his eyes and praying he wouldn’t go all alpha on her.

“Okay,” he sighed deeply. “If you want to keep it a secret, fine. But know that I will beat the hell out of this person when I get to know who he is. I will teach him a lesson he will never forget.” he declared with a hard look in his eyes. “I will not tolerate such callousness in my pack.”

Behind him, his sons fidgeted, overwhelmed by shame and embarrassment.

“May I go back outside?” Nicole quickly asked, eager to leave before she spilled the truth.

“Sure.”

“Those two are still out there,” Vince noted, already throwing an arm out to stop Nicole.

Drake whirled around, “Nicole is safe. This is our pack. No wolf will dare harm her or…try to do what he’s not supposed to do.” He narrowed his eyes at Vince. Observing the flustered look on his sons’ faces. Why this sudden possessiveness? They hadn’t even marked her. She was going to be their chosen mate.

He wondered if they were her…

Are they her second chance mates? The thought hit him like a lightning bolt, making his eyes widen and brows rise.

Did the Goddess hear his prayers and make her…

“I can take care of myself.” Nicole snapped, pushing Vince’s hand away.

“Are they that good-looking? That’s why you kept blushing? You like them?” Vance sneered at her.

“At least they said nice things to me,” Nicole spat back.

“That’s why you were blushing from head to toe?” Vince asked adding his voice.

Both emitting a strong aura of jealousy that Drake couldn’t help but notice, smirking as he watched the three arguing.

“Yeah, I have a right to do that. The last time I checked, I am a female who other men will find attractive and do find attractive,” she wished she could slap these two fools.

Two loud growls bounced off the walls of the office. The twins were struggling to keep their wolves at bay. Hearing their mate saying other males find her attractive was not a good thing.

Drake’s smirk turned into a full blown smile. His joy and that of his wolf boundless.

“You can stop growling because, it won’t do anything….” Nicole held Vince’s gaze before moving to Vance’s. “I can talk to whoever I like, receive compliments from them and there’s nothing both of you can do about that. You can growl from now till the end of time.”

“You belong to us!” Vance blurted out.

“And will not talk to any man or men…especially those who make you blush by saying silly things to you,” Vince growled at her.

Drake’s eyes widened further. Tiger released a deep and joyful howl in his head. They are her second chance mates? What?!

“No, I don’t belong to you!” she threw at Vance. “And I will talk to any man I like, whether they make me blush or not.” she flung at Vince.

“Brown eyes…” Vance starts to say,

“Stop calling me that! You don’t have the right to call me anything!” she snapped. “You have never been good to me, always pushing me away. So, what makes you think that you have the right to tell me what to do or who to talk to? Stay away from me,” she said, bumping Vince’s shoulder as she walked out of the office.

“Wow!” Drake exclaimed as he plunked into his seat. “That’s a Nicole I have never seen.” His eyes shined happily as he looked at the upset and fearful faces of his sons. Their wolves were clearly afraid of losing their mate, especially one who couldn’t feel the bond.

This was way better than he had planned.

He was still contemplating how to approach Oscar and Mabel about his sons taking Nicole as their chosen mate. The last thing he wanted was for them to feel like he asked his sons to choose her out of pity.

This was amazing.

He couldn’t wait to tell Malia. “Honey, you will never guess what I just found out.”

“What?”

“We are going to be grandparents soon.”

“What? Did Vance impregnate Billie?!”

“No!” he chuckled into the link. “I can assure you that whoever he impregnates, alongr with his brother, you’re going to spoil her silly.”

“Spill it out, Drake. You know I hate suspense.”

“After the meeting. And I have decided to do it tonight.”

“I hope this saves us all.”

“Let’s hope so. I will join you soon.” He cut off the link, looking back at his sons. Both looked broken and miserable.

He was certain it wouldn’t be for long.

The only problem was Nicole’s wolf. Her appearance would solve everything.

His prayers have been answered. Nicole was going nowhere, after what he just witnessed. “Chin up boys. Let Ares and Axel know they have nothing to be worried about. Their mate isn’t going anywhere.”

Vince and Vance shared a look.

“Don’t look so shocked, boys. I know both of you are her second chance mates.”
