Jamie POV
My parents were driving me insane. Although my Dad hadn't officially passed over his Alpha status to us it was only a matter of weeks before we turned 17 and took over from him. Despite this, he was refusing to let us lead the pack on anything, almost as if he resented having to hand it over. That morning's meeting had made me so angry I'd missed breakfast, choosing instead to head to the gym to work out my frustrations on the weight machines.
I slammed my fists down on to my desk as I remembered the most frustrating part of the conversation.
"Why don't you and your brothers take Tanya as your chosen Mate? She's from the right family, she'll provide you with beautiful pups, you really couldn't do any better - fated mates make you weak in any case, much better to choose one." I'd stared at my mother open mouthed, unable to believe the rubbish that was coming out of her mouth.
"Yeah because you and Dad are so happy," I'd said sarcastically. "Stay out of it Mum, we turn 18 in two weeks and the Moon Goddess may have blessed us with Tanya as our chosen Mate in any case." I hoped she hadn't though. Tanya was beautiful but she was a b***h and I knew how much she tormented the lower-ranked members of the pack. My chest tightened as I thought about one in particular and I shook my head slightly to rid myself of thoughts of her.
"Watch it Jamie - you're not beyond a bloody good whipping," said my Dad angrily, "treat your mother with respect." I could beat my father easily in a fight and he knew it but he also knew I'd back down - I always did, anything to keep the peace. I bowed my head slightly towards my mother. "Sorry Mum," and stalked out of my father's office.
I'd rattled the old man, it wasn't a secret that my parents weren't fated mates. Dad had wanted someone from a good lineage and the Alpha's daughter from a neighbouring pack suited him perfectly. I don't know if either of them had ever met their fated mates, it wasn't something we ever talked about as a family. We didn't really talk about anything other than pack business to be honest, my parents had never been one for emotional chats. That's why I'd always loved Ottilie's parents. Her mother was kind and warm, there was always a tasty treat waiting for me after school, and a good hug if I'd had a bad day. Her dad was strong and calm, ready to listen and give advice to me and my brothers if asked. I shook my head again to rid myself of those memories, they were tainted anyhow by what they'd done.
Leaving my room to head to the kitchens, goddess I was starving now, I headed round the corner of the dimly lit corridor and smacked right into something, actually someone. They bounced straight off me on to the floor and didn't move. It looked like a young girl but from this angle I couldn't see. Bending down and gently turning her over my breath hitched as I saw it was Ottilie. Her eyes were closed, eyelashes resting on her pale cheeks, her pale pink lips slightly parted. Something inside of me growled as I took in her split lip, bloody nose and clothes that had seen much better days, my grip on her tightening. Despite her injuries, she looked beautiful, she always did though. I barely let myself look at her these days, terrified that I'd let myself go for just a second. Picking her up, I felt how thin she really was, she weighed almost nothing. I felt a pang of guilt as I realised she was probably given very little to eat. Her thin dress had ridden up to expose her long slender thighs, she really had become an incredibly stunning young woman.
"Jamie what happened?" I looked up to see Noah jogging towards me looking concerned, "S**t what did you do to her?"
"Nothing you i***t, she ran into me, what are you doing here anyway, were you following her?" I looked at him with suspicion as I noticed the dried blood on her face. "Did you do this to her Noah?" I growled at him, my inner wolf working us up into a fury.
"Of course not!" He said furiously, "I was asking her who'd done it and she ran away from me." He definitely wasn't telling me the truth, his eyes wouldn't meet mine which was a sure giveaway but I let it go.
"Come one, we need to get her to the pack doctor," I said firmly. "I know I know," I added as he opened his mouth to say something, "We can't leave her like this though and she's obviously not waking up anytime soon, plus I'm sick of Mum and Dad telling us what to do - we're nearly 17, it's about time a few things changed around here."
Noah nodded agreeing with me. We rarely defied our parents but he knew I was right, we had to start somewhere, even if it meant breaking the rules.
As we headed through the doors of the medical centre, a blonde nurse came rushing up to us batting her eyelashes furiously, "Alpha's," she said bowing, "what a pleasure to see you, what can I do for you." she said flirtily.
Noah rolled his eyes at me, "It's fairly obvious isn't it? Look she's been knocked out," I indicated to Ottilie, "get a doctor now,” I ordered, releasing my Alpha aura at her.
She bowed her head slightly and rushed off, returning in seconds with the head doctor, Louise.
"Alpha's," she said bowing her head slightly, "come on this way, let's get her into a bed and I'll examine her." She led us through a set of swinging doors, through the ward and into a private room. I looked down at Ottilie, despite the cuts and bruises, she looked so peaceful. I didn't really want to let her go, she felt so small and vulnerable in my arms and the need to protect her, the same need I'd felt when we were kids, had come rushing back with full force.
Reluctantly I put her gently on the bed, smoothing her hair away from her face.
Noah coughed slightly, and I got a grip of myself, stepping back to let the doctor examine her. She got to work and started hooking Ottilie up to several machines.
"Alpha's," she said, looking over her shoulder, "I've got it from here now."
"We're staying," I said firmly before Noah could open his mouth, he looked at me and nodded.
"We're not going anywhere until she wakes up," he added, settling down in one of the comfortable chairs.
She looked at us both curiously, “sure, let one of the nurses know if you need anything."
We watched as she cut her thin dress away from her, both of our breaths hitching as we took in how tiny she was, her concave stomach was smattered with bruises and cuts. We knew that she was abused by other pack members, I tried to ignore it as much as I could because if I stepped in, it would have made things much worse for her. Seeing it so blatantly however made me furious and a tidal wave of guilt crashed over me. I looked over at Noah, the look of torment on his face letting me know he was feeling the same thing.
"We should have...."he whispered, unable to finish his sentence.
"I know," I said softly, scrunching my hands up into fists. "It ends here," I added forcefully.
Noah nodded agreeing with me, unable to speak. Noah had always been the more emotional one out of the three of us.
Louise tutted as she examined her, muttering to herself and writing down some notes. After a while she stopped, tucking her in between the sheets and turned towards us.
"She's severely malnourished," she said furiously, "and she's clearly been given one hell of a beating. I'd hazard a guess and say that she's passed out from pure exhaustion. The cut on her arm is deep so I'd say she'd lost quite a bit of blood before she'd managed to stitch it up." My mouth dropped open with surprise, I hadn't even noticed the cut on her arm.
"It's not a bad job so she's clearly had practice. I can tell she doesn’t have her wolf yet, which is why she's not healing so well. Why on earth wouldn't she come here if she was injured?"
"She's not allowed," Noah said hoarsely, "Her parents were the ones that, well, they were the old Beta's."
Her eyes widened, "I see," she said softly. Louise had come to us after she'd found her mate in our pack. Although she hadn't been here at the time, everyone knew about the old Beta's and what they'd done. It wasn't exactly a secret either how much Ottilie was hated.
"Well I can't tell you when she's going to wake up, there's nothing seriously wrong with her, other than the fact she needs a good meal and bedrest but she's in the hands of the Moon Goddess now," she said stepping back from her.
I moved to sit on the right hand side of her and picked up her hand. It looked so thin and fragile in my huge one. "Thank you Louise," I said softly, "we'll wait here until she wakes up."
Louise nodded slightly, "Alpha's." She said bowing her head slightly and leaving the room.
Noah instantly got up and moved to the left of her, picking up her other hand he kissed it softly.
"I hate myself," he looked up, tears swimming in his eyes, "I knew it was bad for her, but..." he said unable to finish his sentence.
"I know Noah," I said "We should have done something, we should have stepped in before now. I opened our mindlink to reach Harry. Even though we hadn't shifted yet we'd always been able to link each other. Something to do with the bond we had as triplets.
"He should know." I said as Noah started to say something, "what he wants to do is up to him".
Harry come to the hospital, I said through our mindlink.
Why? He responded quickly. What's happened, is it Noah?
It's Ottilie. I said quickly. She needs us. I closed the mindlink before he could respond. Harry had totally shut down after our parents had banned us from having anything to do with Ottilie. I hated to admit it but he'd probably loved her the most out of all of us and having to stop speaking to her had been tough on him. Dealing with it in the only way he'd known how, he'd blocked her out totally, refusing even to say her name and ignoring her whenever their paths crossed.
I looked at her sleeping face, barely resisting the urge I had to kiss her and prayed to the Moon Goddess that she would wake up. "Never again," I whispered, "I'm so sorry Ottilie, I promise we'll keep you safe."
