"Elaine!!" Mrs. John yelled at the top of her voice and Elaine came rushing in. Mrs. John had seen her strolling into the house as though she was on the runway.
"I am so sorry it took this long to get here. Sorry, mummy." Elaine held her ears like a child who had committed a crime and was promising not to do it again.
"It's fine there. Are you trying to be a model or something? And what's up with the world today? Curvy ladies? They're becoming too much." She rolled her eyes and sipped from her glass before taking a seat.
"That's how we were born, mummy, you can't blame us." Elaine stood beside her until she was asked to sit.
"How's the office?"
"I try my best, mummy, but it's not the same without you. People think I'm still a kid and they cooperate with me only because you were the one who put me in charge. But it's going well. The patients and babies are sound absolutely well." Elaine explained.
After Mrs. John retired, she put her in charge because according to her,
"You're the best person there, Elaine. That's why I picked you. It's not as if you don't have your flaws or anything, but I chose you because you're compassionate towards people. I saw how you handled the case of that rude woman who was in labor and I knew from then that you were the right person for the job." She paused. "Don't be too hard on yourself. Keep doing what you love doing and they will turn around for good. People are hard to please, Elaine, and not everyone will like you. That's how the world works." The woman explained lovingly. Elaine almost teared up.
"Thank you so much for the advice, mummy. I won't feel bad anymore and I will continue to do my best."
"That's my girl. So, when am I hearing wedding bells?"
"Mom?!" Elaine blushed. Since they returned from the party, Mrs. John showered her with so much love. She was like a mother to Elaine and she appreciated that. Her real mom and dad had died in an accident but she survived. And she always felt that her inability to give birth was because of the accident. She curse that day.
"I ain't got time for love. I just started my journey."
Mrs. John shook her head. Elaine had told her everything that happened in the past and she could help but think that Elaine was still trying to heal.
"Baby, you're not getting any younger. You're twenty eight and will be thirty soon. You need to settle down and adopt a child."
"I don't need love before I can adopt. No man will want to stay with a barren woman. He will want a child and I can't give that to him."
"Don't you believe in miracles, my dear? Miracles happen and I'm sure your case won't be different. Mother Nature will have mercy on you and grant you your heart desire, only if you see everything from a positive perspective."
"There's no hope for me anymore. When I get enough money, I will adopt and live with my child. There's no amount of love that can make me so hopeful."
"You haven't met the person yet, honey. When you do, you will be the most hopeful woman on this earth, and mother nature will listen to your cries and make you happy." Mrs. John smiled with her wrinkly old face.
Elaine adored her for her words of wisdom. Aside from being the greatest gynecologist she has met, Mrs. John gave great advice that saved half wrecked homes and broken marriages. She had no children of her own but she was happy. She adopted five babies and even got married. Her husband had been by her side for more than forty years without traces of cheating. Elaine wished she could have something like that.
"Okay, enough talk about love and its allies, let me whip you up something very delicious." She stood up.
"Oh, please do, my love. I always enjoy your cooking. I think you should switch careers when you turn fifty. Your culinary skills are topnotch."
"When are you going back to Cali? I heard you were transferred."
"Oh my God! I can't believe I forgot to tell you this." She hit her head. "I'm traveling next week."
"It's fine. I'm sure you were too excited to meet miss Lane."
"Miss Lane?"
"You know, the curvy one with the lie eyes and red hair. The jewelry and fashion designer."
"Oh, her. She's going to Cali?"
"Yes, tomorrow even. Curvy meets curvy. I wonder who's curvier between the both of you."
"She is."
"That shouldn't be your problem."
"Of course not."
"Make sure you don't kill anyone back at California. I am not entering another police station because of you but if that witch comes with trouble, show her that you're double the trouble."
"Will do, mummy."
They both laughed at that. Elaine had the best mother figure in the whole wide world and she wouldn't trade her for anything.
After spending quality time with Mrs. Hans, she went back to work; her greatest source of sorrow and joy.
Sorrow because everything she ever wished for happened there and she witnessed it; the joy of motherhood.
Joy because she was doing what she had always wanted to do. Even though she started very late, she was doing very well and was glad it wasn't too late to follow her dream.
As she walked past the ER, she overheard some nurses whispering but that didn't bother her. She was good at what she does and people must talk. She smiled when she realized her mother's words were finally sinking in.
'I'm going to be even greater than this and get the whole world talking.'
She had barely gotten to her office when a nurse ran to her.
"Ma'am, we've got a heavily pregnant woman and she just passed out without pushing out the baby."
"Oh my God! Let's go."

"Man! I can't remember the last time I visited California. It's been years." Miss Lane shouted but her mask made it sound like a muffled noise. Her assistant, Stella, and her social media handler, Nadia, stood on each side of her hand. They each had killer dresses on but of course, miss Lane killed it the most. She was all casual; a crop top, baggy pants, a game jacket, and a pair of sneakers. Her red hair was packed in a messy bun as he frontal played with the wind, her tote bag hung from her shoulder and her eyes sparkled as when sunlight hit the blue ocean. She was the definition of perfect.
A lot of pictures of her were updated by people who saw her at the airport. She was even kind enough to take photos with lots of people. She put smiles on children's faces and was hoping to do more in the nearest future.
Her social media handler was getting lots of texts from people and lots of proposals. She just hoped her boss was up for it.
"I so much love it here. The people are much nicer and I've always loved the food." Miss Lane said to her girls, dreaming about all the food she'd eat when she gets out of the airport.
After getting out of the airport, the ladies boarded their Uber to Lane's house. The other two would be staying at a different house but they just wanted to see her off first.
"Wow, it's so white!" Nadia exclaimed as she looked around the house. The white marble floor, the white wall paints, and the white sparkling soft chairs. A huge chandelier hung from above the center of the room and gold lights lit up the room, giving them a royal welcoming.
"This place is beautiful." Stella complimented.
"I'd love to see your room."
"Right this way." Lane led them to her room.
"I hope you don't mind the blue. It's my favorite color."
"I love pink but blue has to be my favorite color now," Stella said.
"Just have a look at your workspace, this is heaven." She touched the machine and the equipment that were there.
"You have a lovely taste, ma'am," Nadia said happily.
"I know, right? Now, I'm starving. You girls go get settled in at your place and let's have lunch together before work."
The girls jumped at the mention of that. Lunch with Miss Lane was never boring as they get to attract lovely men around them. The only thing was that she didn't eat in public, she takes her food home.
Stella was the only person with a boyfriend and it seemed the relationship was quite rocky because of her job. She wasn't going to feel bad if her boyfriend asked for a breakup.
She was going to try to settle in at her new environment and enjoy its sweetness.
"Thank you so much, ma'am. You're the best and that is why the earth chose you for this role." Nadia said. Lane would have hugged her girls but she didn't want to do that just yet. She wanted it to come deep from within her.
"Enough talk, let's move it." She yelled like a commander yelling at his soldiers to go and die at the war front.
Miss Lane was back in her home.
