Third person POV
Lewis Atridge scowled as he listened to the other caller. He appeared very much disappointed with the news he was hearing. He frowned deeply again.
"Listen to me carefully, M." He growled. "I don't care how you get it done; all I want is for you to carry on with the plan. You've got just two days, M., don’t fail me." He snarled before slamming the receiver back in its place.
He walked briskly to the coffee table at the corner of his office and quickly poured himself a brew which he downed in one gulp. He sighed deeply as he felt the burning sensation flood his chest. The only thing that calms his nerve after such disappointment is his favourite brew made from some special and rare herbs found only within his pack land. He poured himself quickly another glass before he moved to the window overlooking the front lawn of the pack house.
The pack house has stood over a hundred years. The three-storey building was initially a wooden cabin but as several generations of Alpha emerged, the house changed with time. Now, it houses the Alpha of the Atridge pack and his family with some high-rank members of the pack. The pack house is huge with a section as his office which he stood in presently, carefully sited at the top floor of the house so as to oversee the other pack members neighbouring homes.
He sighed again as he pondered on the news he had just received. He hated it when his spies gave excuses in place of the victorious news he expected.
As the second most powerful pack in the Northern Province only next to the Lockwood's, he wanted it all, the whole Northern Province; Its packs and wealth. He had been taught the ways of an Atridge since he was a pup.The canny ways in dealing was the strength of all Atridge descendants and he had learnt from one of the greatest, his father.
They both had loathed the Lockwood's for ages. It was not surprising as it ran in the family blood. The Lockwood and Atridge have never for once agreed on something except the peace treaty they signed some centuries back, all thanks to Lionel Lockwood and Lionel Atridge. That was the only era they had agreed and worked together. Only the treaty bound them. Without the treaty, Northern Province would have been a land of chaos, just like the kingdom itself. But the long-lasting peace is already being threatened by a looming storm of war. The very one that might break the bonds between them and furthermore the bonds of all the provinces, thanks to Alpha Derrick Lockwood.
They are here Alpha. Han, his beta said through mind link. Should I send them up? He asked.
Alpha Lewis sighed. He sipped his brew. He knew who had arrived. This was not their first meeting. This was his last chance, if he wanted the Lockwood's lands and its wealth. His last string. He had to make it work. All his spies brought nothing he wanted. So, it was up to him now.
Send them in. He replied. He quickly gulped the remaining content in the glass before he sat at his table with his brown eyes on the door.
He heard their footsteps has they approached the door. He could smell them already. Apart from the registered scent of his Beta, he nose was flooded with the alluring smell of fresh grass mingled with the potent odour of masculinity. He knew they were the one. Evan Meloie and his creations, the widely feared killer wolves.
A growl escaped his lips as they lined up inside staring intensely at him. He stared with equal strength back at them before his gaze moved to the slim handsome figure whose eyes blazed with nothing but boredom.
Evans' eyes scrutinized the office before coming to rest on Alpha Lewis. He smiled softly. "So, we meet again." He smiled softly. "I knew you'd send for me again." he clicked his tongue as he sat on one the leather chairs lazily, flinging his legs on its arms.
"You're welcome." Alpha Lewis scoffed. He knew Evans. They had dealt in several ventures. His ways were too smooth and equally as cunning as an Atridge’s.
"Hope you didn't mind the distance?" He began to say.
Evans rolled his eyes. "Oh....please. Cut the pleasantries and go straight to the reason why you sent for me. Thank the goddess, you've used up all the favours I owe you, this been the last of it. I certainly won't be making such arduous journey in the nearest future.” He sneered. “I really never liked the North.”
Alpha Lewis growled. He couldn't stand the outburst but he controlled his wolf that threatened to make an appearance. He knew the result if he behaved stupidly.
"Please don't tell me you called me for the Lockwoods again." Evans added.
"There are other experts I can call besides you, Evans." He countered. "But unfortunately, yes." He watched the smile crawl out of Evans face.
Evans sighed. "I can't believe I wasted two days’ arduous journey for nothing but this!" He screamed. "If you think you can waste my time again on the Lockwood pack issues, Alpha Lewis, then you better get ready to hear this." He stood up, glaring. "Forget it." He turned to leave.
"It isn't like the other times." Alpha Lewis growled. He watched as Evans walked briskly to the door. His last straw. He knew there was no way he could bring Evans back to do his bidding if he allowed him walk out the door.
"What if it’s about the Luna?" He shouted. He smiled as he saw Evans stop at the door.
"Don't pull that on me." Evans said with his back unturned. "We both know the Luna is dead." He opened the door.
"And the True Luna?"
Evans froze in his step. He turned slowly. He gritted his teeth as he met Alpha Lewis' calm eyes.
"A True Luna?" He asked.
"That's what I said." Alpha Lewis confirmed. He smiled. He watched as Evans face shifted with several emotions. Alpha Lewis knew he has gotten his attention.
"I don't know what trick you are pulling on me, but I am glad to tell you that it isn’t working." Evans scowled. "There isn't a Luna anymore not to say a True Luna that hasn't been inexistence since Luna Jadiel died, which was three hundred years ago."
"What if another True Luna exists now?" Alpha Lewis questioned, his eyes never wavered from Evan's.
Evans smiled softly. He knew if a True Luna existed at the moment, he was in with luck. "How did you get by this?" He asked.
"An Atridge always get what he wants." Alpha Lewis replied.
"Do you know what you're saying?" Evans breathed. "Do you know what you're insinuating? A True Luna?"
"That is why I called you, Evans."
Evans smiled. How Alpha Lewis got the information before him annoyed him. He knew everything going on in almost all the provinces. He had once been the Alpha King’s witch and lover. That was before Monica took his place. But he still had his informants and spies all around the provinces. How could information as precious as this had evaded him? He wondered.
"Where is this supposed True Luna?” Evans quoted with his fingers. He stared at the Alpha sitting calmly in his chair returning his look. Then it hit him. He widened his eyes as he drew closer to the Alpha's table. The smirk on the Alpha's face confirmed whatever he thought.
"I know you'd figure it out without me telling you." Alpha Lewis smiled. He had Evans now and nothing will stop what he had already pushed into motion.
"Why have you waited this long to tell me?" Evans said. He knew Alpha Lewis was up to no good. Something must have triggered him to talk. He didn't care much about it. All he wanted was the True Luna just like he did the last Luna.
"Now is the right time." Alpha Lewis answered simply. "Now we can talk business." He said with a serious face.
Evans smiled. "It is always nice doing business withyou, Lewis Atridge." He replied consciously omitting the Alpha title. His smile broadened as he took his seat in front of the growling Alpha with bright yellow eyes.
Evans breathed deeply as he stepped out of the park house. Flanking his sides, where his guards, his handiwork. Twelve killer wolves; the fearsome of all wolves. Even though they are with no Alpha status, they are equal in strength to most Alphas. Their very sight makes some Alphas tremble.
Evans smiled at his handiwork. He made them so. Fuelled with magic of his ancient ancestors he had fashioned them. Even the Alpha King adored them.
He smiled as he remembered the deal he made with AlphaLewis. He knew how greedy and cunning the Alpha can be but he knew he was an equal match for whatever the Alpha planned. He is Evans Meloie after all, the last of the Meloies; one of the most powerful witch families.
"What do we do now?" One of his men asked.
Evans smiled. He knew his price waited for him just a few miles north from the pack house; his ticket back into the heart of the Alpha King. He had always been the favourite of his Alpha up until he made the mistake that caused him his position and comfort in the Alpha King’s pack but with what lies waiting for him in the Lockwood pack, he knew the end of his anguish was near.
"To the Lockwood….." He said almost in a sing-song voice.
-
It has been two weeks since he'd met with Alpha Lewis and he was with nothing. He had spied on the Lockwood pack and heard nothing, not even a slightest clue of the presence of a Luna not to mention a True Luna.
Evans grumbled, his patience had worn thin. He couldn't believe he had actually fallen for the idea of Alpha Lewis. He had believed a True Luna lives. His blood boiled with anger as he stumbled over a decaying trunk. He blasted a couple of trees in anger setting them on fire instantly.
"That fool of an Alpha!" He mumbled. His wolf guards knew better to stay away from their master. They knew he was no longer himself as his eyes blazed with anger and terror. He had been pushed over his limit. They all trudged behind him.
Evans stopped in his track. His senses picked up a faint shout. He wondered who would have ventured so deep into the woods. His eyes scanned the woods as he listened. He caught sight of a wolf afar off. He signalled his guard. They all gathered around him instantly. Evans smirked at the approaching wolf. The wolf seemed oblivious off his surrounding as it approached. Evan smiled slyly. At last, he'd seen someone he would vest all his anger and frustrations upon; a plaything to calm his aching nerves. He watched as the wolf ran into the clearing few feet from him unaware of their presence.
"Spread out." He whispered softly. His guards began to move silently through the trees. Evans’ eyes never left the huge grey wolf panting in the clearing. He smiled as the thoughts of what he would do to the wolf crept into his mind. How lovely. He thought. Evans was about to signal to his guards to attack the wolf when his eyes caught a figure running towards the grey wolf.
His eyes widened as he saw the boy drop on his knees, panting heavily. The boy was tall and handsome. His almost white hair shone in the sun, his smooth face with red puckered lips. Evans blinked. The boy was the prettiest thing he had seen in ages. He reminded him of someone. He was alluring. He gasped as he saw him dive to his side speaking to the wolf as it drew closer to him. His green eyes filled with laughter and joy as well as a well-hidden pain. Evans could read it in his eyes. The boy was hurting. He smiled unconsciously as he watched the boy and the wolf that had shifted into a medium built teenager, roll on the floor. The wood was filled with their laughter and giggles. He stared at them as they spoke softly to each other. He sensed a bond stronger than friendship between them; a bond of love. The cord that binds them were strong. Incredibly strong. He knew immediately they were not brothers but friends or lovers from birth.
Evans could not take his eyes off the green-eyed boy lying on the ground. He stretched his finger towards him as he recited a spell. He felt a tingling sensation. His iris shifted to that of a feline. He gasped at what he saw. He couldn't believe it. The boy was enveloped in moon light. He shone bright as like a full moon. His aura blazed radiantly giving life to the surrounding trees. His aura flickered suddenly dimming its intensity as the greyish aura of the boy next to him brightened suddenly, then burned brighter again just to dim again. Evans was lost in this display of light. He lost track of time.
Then it hit him.
“You're a Luna, Jason." The wolf boy shouted in anger. "A True Luna, the first in the last hundred years or so."
Evans held his breathe as the word sank into him. I found him. The green-eyed boy, Jason was the True Luna. He gasped again. So, the True Luna lives. He blinked as he processed what he had just heard. He felt the eyes of his guard on him, they had sense his joy.
"At last...." He whispered.
What he seek was right in front of him. He stared at both boys in the clearing ahead. He was snapped out of his reverie by the snap of a twig. He realized it was him. He looked back at the boys. The wolf boy snapped his head at his direction. He had sensed them already. Evans scowled as he saw him take a stance in front of the boy. Evans knew he had made them known and it would be futile to stay hidden any longer.
His powers flared to life. He sucked up warmth in the clearing drawing in power from the life around him. He signalled for his men to move as he dissolved into mist.
"I had almost giving up." Evans said as his voice rang through the woods. "All thanks to you, young wolf. Now I can go back and have a well-deserved rest in the position I deserve." He materialized in front of them
He flicked back his long black hair staring deeply into Jason’s eyes. Evans saw him flinch before staring at the wolf boy's feet. He heard Marcus growl deeply digging his heels into the ground.
"You'd be wise to let him go, and then you can run back to your Alpha." He said lazily. He suddenly gave attention to his well-manicured fingers. "I'd give it to him though. He hid you well all these years." Evans glanced at Jason. "How he did it however I don't know." Evans sneered.
"Leave..." Marcus growled.
Evans chuckled loudly. He turned to his guards. "He's got balls. Don't you think?" They smiled briefly at their master before staring at the fear-filled boys with death looks.
"Give him to me and I will let you leave unharmed." Evans sneered. “And don’t even think of mind-linking your Alpha. I am sure you know by now that it won’t work.” He couldn't tolerate the wolf boy any longer. He felt power rush to his fingers as he glared at him. He wouldn't mind hurting the boy but he wanted someone to go tell Alpha Derrick that his precious pack member is gone. At least it would save him the effort and time to do that.
"Not while I still breathe." Marcus snarled. He shielded Jason with his body.
Evans sighed. "I hoped you won’t be too stubborn and would run home like a gentle obedient little pup will do."
Marcus growled deeply. "I am not a pup!" He held his gaze with the Evans for minutes. Evans stared back intensely, summoning power through his eyes. He smiled inwardly as he watched the wolf boy lowered his eyes.
Evans sighed as he turned. "Then have it your way." He heard Marcus snarl. He knew what they would do since they had noother choice. They ran.
Evans had dissolved into mist. He was not disappointed when he heard the painful howls of the wolf boy. I'd tried to save him but he foolishly turned me down. Evans thought. He even stood his ground and fought his guards, how foolish. Evans followed Jason into the Ridge forest. The forest’s silence soothed him strangely. He noticed it was void of life. Even the trees were barely alive. Some remained standing yet dead. He knew he will be a bit vulnerable if he would have to fight in the forest since he loved draining power from living things around him.
He watched as Jason skidded to a stop as another wolf drop in his front. Evans smiled even in his current misty form as he remembered the plan. The wolf was not his but a war wolf from the Atridge pack; the spy within theLockwood's pack. The Alpha is indeed a clever one. They both had planned this scenario as a test. Evans thought as he watched the fight between Jason and the wolf.
His suspicion was confirmed when Jason killed the war wolf in a flash, his eyes flashed deep green for a moment.
"That was quick..." Evans broke the silence. He grinned as Jason turned around trying to find who the voice belonged to. He saw him gasp as he noticed he was trapped. Perfect.
"I can feel your wolf as you fought..." Evans taunted. He appeared behind a tree away from Jason's sight signalling for his wolves to move in. Evans couldn't shake a sudden feeling that he was running out of time. His gaze was on the True Luna, the only possible way to the Alpha King's heart. He chuckled as his wolves closed in.
Finally, I will be with my beloved again. He thought as the first wolf attacked.
