Jason POV
I dug my heels into the ground as the wolves broke into a run towards me. It is just you and I, Era. I said to my wolf, blinking out the sweat from my eyes. From the metallic smell and sting, I knew it was mixed with blood. My blood.
"Not my son!" My mum’s voice rang out from behind me. I turned to see her running towards me. She moved so gracefully. Then, I realised she was gliding not running, behind her was my dad, my sister and our pack's war wolves. I almost didn’t notice the huge midnight black wolf that trailed behind her as she glided forward. It was Alpha Derrick. His wolf blended so well with the shadow only to be illuminated by a blazing ball of pure white energy heading my direction. My eyes widened with shock.
I managed to crouch just in time for the energy to sail over me, hitting the first wolf in midair. It exploded, sending photons of light into the air. The air grew hot as ashes rained on me. I turned to see two other wolves get smitten by the light. It didn't do much harm but their furs were burnt off leaving a blistered skin in view.
Alpha Derrick pounced on the closest wolf ripping it head in two, ending its agony in seconds. The fight started all around me; wolves snarled against one another as they collided.
"Are you alright?" My mum hugged me tightly. A wave of relief washed over me. I sank deeply into her, sobbing. I couldn't believe I was saved in nick of time.I'd faced death few minutes ago, knowing I would not make it alive or unscarred.
"Yes....I'm fine." I managed to say. My sister hugged me as soon as mum's hold on me softened.
She pulled me up."I am sorry Jason." She cried, planting few kisses on my head. I snuggled closer to her basking in the soft heat that emanated from her against the cold forest breeze.
A cold chill washed over me when I heard an explosion. I gasped. Bella stiffened for a moment then quickly step forward hiding me behind her. I snarled quietly. I had had enough of people shoving me behind whenever danger loomed. I moved to stay beside her, meeting her fiery gaze with a determined look. I won't stay behind.
I watched as a blue shimmering light divide us and the attacking wolves. It flared up brightly, lighting the forest in a blue glow. I felt warm as it continued to blaze. It was a transparent shield keeping the other wolves at bay.
I surveyed the area quickly making a quick check on our casualty. Tears filled my eyes as the ground litter with limp wolves. I wasn't sure if they were dead but surely, they weren't moving. I held back a sob as I envisioned them as fathers or brothers of some pack members. They had sacrificed themselves to save a common pack member; a weak wolf, son to the pack's Beta.
Alpha Derrick stood in front, snarling at the barrier mum had conjured, his eyes unwavering from the other wolves at the other end. I wasn't surprised to see they were six of them left. One burnt to ashes while others had either been torn to bits and pieces or without their head. They are really strong. I thought. They held up pretty much against the pack war wolves that had outnumbered them.
I shuddered as the mystery man from the wood materialised in front of his wolves waving to them to stand down. He walked tentatively to the shimmering barrier holding his hands out to touch it. A smile crept on his face has his hands ran along the barrier. He closed his eyes and his smile broadened.
"I know of only one person that can raise a shield of this sort." He said, his eyes searching as though he couldn't see beyond the shield.
"Sophie......"He grinned. "I know you are out here."
I stiffened alongside my sister as he called out for my mum. I glanced at her. No one calls her that except dad. She looked surprised and also wore a worried look. Bella and I shared the same look as mum stepped forward gingerly.
"S....oooo....pphhhiiieeee..."He sang.
I took an unconscious step following my mum only to be stopped by a wolf that happens to be my dad. I had not thought of him throughout the fight. I knew he would be around though. I saw my mum stop a few feet from the shield standing next to Alpha Derrick.
"Oh! My dear Sophie…." Mystery man gasped in a fake shock. "This isn't a proper way to greet an old acquaintance." He smiled slyly.
I groaned as I saw him smile again. Remind me to hit that smile off his face whenever we get the chance. I said inwardly to Era, my wolf. His sly smile had begun to annoy me.
"Evans?" I heard my mother asked unsure.
So, the fox has a name. I thought. Not bad. It suits him. Just as cute with his handsome face and annoying smile.
Did you just think that? Era asked. I snapped out of my thoughts and back to scowling at the man who had forcibly wanted me to come with him a while back.
"It is good to see you again. I missed you all these years." Evans said.
My mum sneered. "I haven't." She simply replied.
"Still holding old grudges, are we?" Evans taunted. "I wanted to make it up to you after what happened. I searched all over for you."
"I knew you would." She said. "But I made sure you couldn't find mind me."
"And you did great job hiding yourself well." He grinned. His eyes searched till it`rested on me.
I held his gaze this time, refusing to back down like I did in the wood.
"So confident now......are we?" He said.
My mum frowned, obviously confused. Then she trailed his eyes until it rested on me. I glanced at her. "What do you want?" She seethed.
"Same thing I wanted before you all ruined the little party; him, of course." He pointed to me.
Alpha Derrick growled at him. His canine foamed with his eyes on Evans.
Evans rolled his eyes. "Don't growl at me, wolf." He scowled. His face left no trace of the smile that was once there.
"Why?" Mum asked. "He has not done anything worth noticing."
"You know why,Sophie." He faced her. "I wondered how he had gone unnoticed all these years, but now I know how he had stayed hidden all this while. You did well Sophie. I never knew you were going to be this strong. But sadly, it is time to give him up."
Mum stiffened. "You won't lay a finger on my son." The shield flared brightly.
Evan's face looked puzzled. "Your son!?" He asked confusedly.
"You heard me Evans. So, you better crawl back into whatever hole you emerged from."
Evans stood dazed. He stared back at me scanning me again with his searching eyes then moved to stare at Alpha Derrick who growled softly at the menacing glare. He stayed quiet for a while before he shook himself.
"You almost had me there, Sophie." His smile returned. "Do you actually think I would believe that?" He rolled his eyes.
The blue shield dimmed a bit. Mum wavered. She shifted slightly. I knew the words Evans said caught her unawares but I never expected the reaction I saw. I gulped nervously as the Evans smiled at me.
Damn you and that smile. I thought.
"What do you mean?" Mum chuckled. "...that I wouldn't know my son?"
"You lie...." He said.
"Why would I lie about that?" Mum glared at him.
Evans smile broadened as if he just realised something. He turned his back as he walked few feet away from the shield. He turned to look at Alpha Derrick. He broke into a laugh.
I frowned. I watched him laugh, patting the fur of one of his wolves as he muttered incoherently. Mum glanced nervously at me then to my dad. Something isn't right. I thought why would he think my mum would lie about me being her son.
“I have had enough of this.” I groaned. "Who do you think you are to think of me otherwise?" I blurted out ignoring the shock on my sister's face, even my mum’s. I stumbled forward till I stopped next our Alpha. "I am Jason Evans, son of Philip Evans, Lockwood's pack beta and Emma Evans, the pack's witch." I smiled inwardly as I noticed the effect of what I said. Evans’sly smile vanished. He stared back in shock. I guessed he didn't see the outburst coming.
"He speaks...." Evans grinned. "So proud of your family, are you?" He teased. "I won't be so quick to do that if I were you."
"What in Mother's name are you saying?" I asked. My wolf growled. My face shook with anger. He seemed to notice how angry his smile made me, so he broadened it.
"My dear Sophie or should I call you Emma......" He said. "I know how much you loathe me and I do you too, but it is either you've perfected your skill at lying or you really don't know. Believe me when I tell you this, Jason is not your son." He sneered.
I glanced nervously at my mum, her face, void of emotion. I heard my dad shift back just as Alpha Derrick shifted. He walked briskly to her side.
"What did you just say?" He asked Evans. His eyes swirl with anger. "Are you calling my mate a liar?" He growled.
"Ask her." Evans answered with a bored tone. He turned to my mum. She stood unmoved.
I breathed slowly waiting for her deny the allegation. "Mum?" I whispered.
"Interesting...." Evans said. "Sophie, you are indeed your mother's daughter. You completely fooled your mate."
"Sophie?" I heard dad shook mum.
"What a b***h you are to sleep with another wolf and give his pup to your mate. Even I won't do that to my mate." Evans sneered.
I stood there dumbfounded as Evans statement settled in me. I glanced at my mum who stood still and void of emotion. She had deceived us all this time, deceived her mate above all. She had been the perfect mother; a woman pure of heart that everyone in the pack idolise.
How could she do this?
"Sophie? Talk to me!" Dad shouted. "What is he talking about!?"
The shield glow dimmed as she turned to look at her mate. Her mouth shook nervously. Her glassy eyes held back the tears that threatened to fall.
"Save the drama till you get home. It is too boring to watch. All I want is the True Luna that stands with you. Give him to me!" Evans seethed. His menacing eyes bore holes into mind.
That word again, True Luna. Marcus said the same to me back in the woods that I am a True Luna. What in the world is happening? I am not a Luna. I am just Jason. Jason Evans.
"Come get him!I dare you to!” Mum replied in anger. She voiced in a dangerous tone I have never heard from her before. The air around crackled with power. The shield grew brighter.
Evans’ iris turned red, his gaze never swerving from me. "I don't want to fight you, Sophie. I never wanted this. All I want is the True Luna." He scowled.
"Then you'd have to go through me first, Evan Meloie." Mum shouted. Her hands lit with white light.
"You asked for it." Evans seethed.
The shield drew closer, passing through mum to envelope us. I watched as Evans threw a ball of energy at mum. She intercepted it hers but kept walking gracefully, unnerved.
Evans continued to attack which didn't faze mum any bit. He panted, his face filled with worry. Mum's power flared continually as she intercepted every of Evan's energy, sucking it into hers, then she began to glow. I read the fear on Evans face as he watched mum get enveloped in white light. He stepped backwards.
"This isn't over." He sneered. He glanced at me, giving me his sly smile before dissolving into mist that cover his wolves and with a pop, he vanished with his minions.
"Enjoy the fight. Don't sleep with both your eyes closed because I won't give you the rest you will so long for until I have you in my grasp." I heard his voice in my head.
Before I could react, the world blurred. The environment changed. I was back in front of the pack house alongside everyone. Mum stood ahead in same distance she was from us when in the forest. Her glow had faded but the hum of power lingered in the air.
The sun had set. I stood there watching everyone run around to help the injured wolves. I heard a heart piercing scream, then another before I broke down in tears. I knew they belonged to relatives of the wolves that didn't make it back alive. I sobbed quietly.
My day had started with much joy and bliss. I would never have imagined things would turn out the way they did. Evans words rang in my ears. I won't give you the rest you will long for until I have you in my grasp. His sly smile haunted me even with my eyes closed. What is happening? I silently prayed to the goddess. I hoped all that Evans had said were all but jokes. I was their son, their only son.
I lost track of time. I stood there sobbing silently. I hadn't even moved a finger since we appeared back. I continued to stare at the point mum stood long after she had left.
"Jason?" My sister, Bella called out. I ignored her. I felt her hands on my shoulder. "You've been standing there for over an hour now. You need to come inside." I heard the pain in her voice.
An hour? It just felt like minutes. I thought.
She gently held me in her arms guiding me towards the pack house and into the lounge. She continued to hold me as we sat on one of the many sofas.
"It is going to be alright...." She said. I wish I could believe her but somehow, I knew this was just one of the many things I would be facing in time soon.
I remained silent as I played back what had happened. Marcus? I shuddered. Where is he? I thought.I hadn't seen him around. I sobbed softly as I remembered the painful howl I heard before plunging into the Ridge. He had gotten himself hurt by fighting those damn wolves.
"Jason?"I heard Alpha Derrick mutter. He sighed deeply. "Come here, son" he said.
Even in my weakened and thoughtful state, I couldn't hold back. He was the Alpha after all. His duty is to protect.
I stood up, barely upright. I trudged into his open arms. His strong embrace soothed my nerves as I sank more into him, inhaling the soap he had washed with. I began to calm in his arms as he rubbed my back in circles. He had held me in his arms many times and it felt just as good even better than my dad’s.
"It is alright, son" he said softly. "I'm here to protect you. He won't hurt you ever again."
I sighed. He sat then pulled me into his laps. Alpha Derrick’s hands were strangely soft and I found it comfortable. In seconds, I drifted into a much-needed sleep.
I won't give you the rest you will long for until I have you in my grasp. Evans cold voice rang in my head. I woke with a jerk. I was lying on one of the sofa with my head on the Alpha Derrick's lap.
"You're safe." He said calmly.
I heard the door slam open. I turned to see my dad storm inside; trailing behind him was my mum,her eyes, puffy from crying. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes as my father stormed towards the Alpha.
I tried to sit up but my legs throbbed with pain.
"You'll answer me right now, Derrick." My dad shouted. His eyes filled with anger. He grabbed the Alpha by the collar pulling him to himself. I felt wave of rage roll from him as he glared at Alpha.
I caught the swift movement of the pack’s Gamma and few other war wolves hurried forward only to be stopped by the Alpha who faced my father unnerved. They stood still as they recovered from the sudden disrespect of my father to the Alpha. Present pack members stood in surprise with gaping mouth.
"Stop this...." My mum begged with tears. "Philip.... Please!"
"Dad?" I whispered.
"Are you Jason's father?" He asked out of the blue.
I felt like I was hit by a lightening. I heard the loud gasp and muttering of the growing audience. I felt hot. First, I discover that am a True Luna, then this......
"Dad, what are you talking about?" I croaked.
"Answer me, Derrick." He asked. "Did you sleep with my mate? Is he really your son?" He pointed at me.
"You will respect me Philip. I'm still your Alpha!" Alpha Derrick growled speaking with his Alpha voice. His eyes swirl deep yellow as he let go of himself from my dad's grip.
Everyone shifted nervously, bowing their heads in submission. Dad took a step backward. I saw he was fighting the Alpha's command. His eyes blazed icy blue as he tried to keep his wolf from coming out.
"Is he?" He screamed.
The room grew silent. Tension was heavy in the air. I felt eyes on me. My mum sobbed loudly in my sister’s arms.
"First, I didn't sleep with your mate. I would never do that." Alpha growled. "....and yes. Jason is my son."
"What!?" I screamed. I struggled on my feet as every eyes in the room stared at me. The angry icy blue eyes of my father, the bright yellow ones of Alpha Derrick, my mum's pitiful teary eyes, my sister's face turned in disbelief. She exchanged looks with a guy have never seen before.
The room temperature dropped rapidly as I scanned everyone.
My eyes rested on a pair of red iris far behind. Its cloaked owner smiled evilly. I sucked in breath as I registered his face.
"Evans..." I whispered before everything blurred, then blackened.
