Chapter 5 Paris Frank stepped inside the cafe that was tucked away alongside the train tracks running into Gare du Nord, the central Parisian railway station. It had been a quick journey from St Pancras, London through the Channel Tunnel. Inside, the cafe had high ceilings with ornate fixings and a large tiled wall blocking the kitchen. The daily menu was scribbled incoherently on a blackboard and, behind the counter, the coffee machine hissed and gurgled. A young woman standing behind the service counter gave him a warm smile and asked him what he wanted to eat. Frank only ordered a black coffee before moving deeper into the cafe, with decorated walls of old black and white framed photographs depicting a bygone Paris.
