After Madame Kindred had spoken to the maid, Luc finally identified the accent he'd heard in her French—American, but Southern. So she was a former Confederate, likely an expatriate who had escaped to Europe. That made her more than a glorified art thief. She had family connections. And money, most likely, although why would she be working? And what was she doing on the ship alone?
