Chase's POV
The next few weeks have been pure bliss. We finally have a place to call home. Amy and I decided that we want to settle down here. She started work last month and is absolutely enjoying herself there. She is such an inspiration to me, that I decided to take a big leap. I am in the process of starting my own butcher store. We have plenty of land for animals, and the people in this town are the nicest I have ever met. I was able to buy a few cows, pigs, and chickens for real cheap! The guy I bought them from said it's a welcome to town discount. I think he was just being friendly, because we were talking for awhile and became buddies. The guy, Sean, even helped me build a fence around my yard, set up coops, and a few other farm structures. Amy has been so supportive through all of this. I feel bad that I'm not contributing financially at the moment. I will be soon, hopefully in a week or two. We are almost through with the money we had saved up before coming here.
I'm now laying in bed thinking of ways to make money to purchase the last of the equipment I need for the shop. I was lost in thought that I didn't notice Amy was standing at the door with a smile on her face, until she cleared her throat.
"Did you hear me?" she asks.
"No, sorry beautiful. What's going on?"
"I asked if you could come downstairs, please. I have a surprise for you."
What in the world is this woman up to, I wondering to myself. I slowly make my way downstairs trying to think of what the surprise could possibly be.
When I made my way to the last step, Amy told me to close my eyes as she grabbed my hand. With careful steps, I can tell she guided us to the kitchen.
"Okay, open!" She excitedly shouts out. God, she's so adorable.
My jaw hits the ground and tears start to form in my eyes. On the table is a whole set of butcher knife sets, two sets of gloves, two aprons, one with her name on it and the other mine. There's also a meat saw which is sitting on top of a rolling metal cart. On top of the kitchen table, there are two pictures. On is a picture of a cold cabinet for the front of the store. The other picture is of a commercial grade refrigerator.
"How?" I know the first thing I should say is thank you, but instead that question came out of my mouth.
"Elizabeth."
I froze. Did she just say what I think she did? Elizabeth? As in Jane's daughter?
"I'll explain tonight when she comes over for dinner."
"Amy, what the hell is going on?"
She just smiled at me and told me to go freshen up while she prepares the food.
I just nod my head in agreement, not knowing what else to do. I must have spent longer than necessary in there, because when I came back into the kitchen; Elizabeth was already here.
"Hello, Chase!" She greets; as she gives me a hug.
I put on the best smile I could fake and greet her back. Amy guides us to the backyard where she has dinner set up on the wooden picnic table.
Elizabeth and Amy are chatting like they've been friends forever. I've never been more clueless. When did they start talking to each other? Does she know we killed her mother? Is she here for revenge?
Amy's POV
I was talking with Elizabeth when I glanced over and noticed a very confused looking face. Chase probably has so many questions running through that gorgeous head of his. I guess I should start explaining everything to him.
"Chase"
"Hmm?"
"Thank you" Elizabeth says.
"For what?"
"Helping with killing my mom"
As those words left her mouth, all you could hear is the clinking of silverware that Chase dropped.
"W-what do you mean?"
"It's okay, she's not mad." I chime in.
Elizabeth takes a deep breath in and then out before telling her story. "As you know, my little sister saw my mom kill my dad. What they didn't know, was that I also witnessed it. I was standing behind Victoria, but she was so focused on what was going on that she didn't know I was present. When she slit his throat, I darted to my room which wasn't too far away. I could hear my sister screaming and crying, so I covered my ears with my hands. I should've done something, but was so f*****g scared of that woman."
I put my arms around her and I let her cry into my shoulder.
"The next day, my mother told me that my dad left her and took Victoria with him. I never questioned her. The day I turned 18, I moved the hell out of there. I got an apartment with my husband, well boyfriend at the time, and would only visit on occasion. Just to make it seem like I wasn't suspicious of her actions."
"Elizabeth, I'm so sorry for what you went through. It's not your fault though, you were a child. She would've killed you too if you tried to intervene." Chase calmly says.
"If you don't mind me asking, how did you two get in contact?"
"Well, the day Amy moved into my mom's house, was the last time I spoke with her. She called to tell me about your situation and if you could use my clothes."
"After we hung up, I immediately started looking on social media, google, anything to find your contact information. I felt the need to warn you of how dangerous that woman was."
"Why didn't you call me?" Chase asks.
"I had no idea that you guys were friends. Mother left that detail out."
"I decided that as much as I didn't want to, I would drive back to Pleasant View to pretend to visit her and warn you. I was much surprised though when I arrived in town and saw the diner closed. That woman lived at the business, so I knew right away that something was up. I pulled up to my mom's driveway and saw Henry knocking on the front door. That poor man has been in love with mom forever. I asked him what he was doing there and he told me that he hadn't seen mom in two days. I told him to go home and I'll let him know if I see or hear from her. He left and I immediately started searching the house."
"I thought mother killed Amy and was hiding her body somewhere since I didn't find her in the house either. I was so stressed out, so I went outside to have a smoke. The one and only thing I miss about that house, is the beautiful garden mom had. I went to sit on the bench when I noticed it was in a different location." She smirked while looking at me and Chase.
"I honestly wouldn't have thought of digging if it wasn't for you guys. That bench was my only hint as to what I was about to do. I went to the shed and noticed the shovel missing, so had to waste time going to the store to buy one." She again smirked at us.
"I couldn't help the cry of relief I had when I dug up the ground and saw my mother's body. I loved that woman, but grew to hate her when she revealed her true colors. I was glad she was dead and couldn't hurt anyone. I started to worry though when I saw bones beside her body. They were too small to be an adults, and that's when I realized it was my little sister. I took the bones out and brought them home with me. I placed them in a nice, personalized box and buried her in my backyard. I cried for hours, but had to pull myself together since my husband was coming home soon. As for mother's body, I tied a weight to it and dumped her and her head into the ocean on my drive home."
"Yes, my husband doesn't know about any of this. It feels so good to get this weight off my shoulder with you guys. Anyway, I still wanted to find you and hired a private investigator. Whenever it seemed like he had a lead, you guys would disappear! "
Chase and I laughed at that. "Sorry, we moved a lot due to traveling the U.S."
"Oh! That sounds fun!" she laughs along with us. "So, that's how I managed to find Amy here. It wasn't hard to track her down in this town. I went to her job and introduced myself. At first, she looked like she was going to s**t her pants."
"Hey! Can you blame me?!" I playfully shout.
Shaking her head, laughing, "No" she replies.
"We got to talking and I must say, I appreciate hard workers and dreamers like you two are. I was more than happy to help with getting your butcher business started. Please, consider it as a thank you gift from me."
"I don't know what to say, other than thank you! It means so much to me, to us." Chase gratefully says.
"I've got to head home now. I would love for you to come over someday and meet my family?"
"We would love to!" Chase and I both say at once.
With that, we gave her a hug and said good bye.
