I don’t know why I needed time to think. I walked out of the house, leaving a silent Xander sitting on my couch. I walked past the three standing outside, ignoring their calls.
“Lena, please come back here so we can talk.” Kyle called out. I ignored him. That is a whole other situation that I need to take care of after the one in the house.
“ALENA! You are in no position to drive, you literally just drank three quarters of a bottle of wine.” Mia yelled. Kyle’s eyes went wide.
“ALENA!” he screamed. I slammed the door to my car, started the engine and put the car in reverse. He ran to the car, trying to open the door. I stopped and rolled down the window.
“I need time. What he did, was unacceptable and I am done with him. Get him out of my house. As for you, I am more pissed at you than anything. How dare you bring someone to my home without talking to me first. How dare you keep what happened away a secret from me and be vague with me on the phone instead of telling me what happened. How dare you let him ask me to become official knowing what he did.” Saying I was mad was an understatement.
“I can explain why I didn’t tell you but can you please, get out of the car. You have been drinking.” He pleaded.
“I don’t care.” I rolled my window up and drove out of the driveway to the park about 10 minutes away. Should I be driving? No. I knew that. But I didn’t care at the moment. My world came crashing down in a matter of 5 minutes and I needed to get away.
I walked up to the swings and gentle swayed on them for a bit, lost in thought and letting the tears slowly trickle down my face. I sat there deep in thought.
Why would Xander do that? I thought he liked me. I mean he wanted to finally become official. Why would he send pictures to another girl if he intended to be something with me?
Why didn’t Kyle tell me what happened on the phone? And why did he bring him to my house?
I sat there for about 20 minutes before I felt someone push my swing. I knew who it was, and they were being very gently, trying not to disturb me.
“Why are you here?” I asked him.
“You always come to the park when you need to think. Did you really think I didn’t notice that?” He spoke.
“You didn’t answer me.” I snapped back, not looking at him.
“I came here to make sure you were okay.”
“I’m peachy.” I said sternly. I dug my heals into the ground, stopping the swing. I hopped off and went to me car, speeding back home and leaving him at the park.
I pulled into my driveway, and I notice that Mia and Kyle were not outside anymore but sitting on the stairs was Xander. He held his head in his hands, facing the ground. He looked upset, but a part of me didn’t care.
His head snapped up to the sound of my car door shutting off. He stood up, displaying his puffy eyes and tried to reach out for my hand but I pulled them away.
“Lena, please don’t do this. I care so much about you.” He pleaded. I looked at him in the eyes and I can see some truth in that statement. My heart was saying, why not, give him another chance, but my head was saying screw that guy, you can get someone better, you have someone better.
“I want you to stay away from me. You might not have physically cheated on me, but you admitted to sending pictures to some girl that randomly gave you her number. If you did it this time, how many times have you done it in the past?” I had stone cold eyes. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his pants and smirked at me.
“Why would it matter how many times I did it?” he questioned and started to chuckle. I saw out of the corner of my eye, Kyle and Mia were watching from the window. They seen me ball my hands into fists and knew something was about to happen.
I heard the door open, and I saw them both peak out, but Xander, too focused on me didn’t notice. I heard behind car tires pulling into the driveway and the engine cut off and the door shut. I heard the footsteps from him behind me, watching the scene in front of everyone unfold. I heard whispers between Kyle and Mia.
“What are you talking about?” I simply asked.
“We were never official, so what I did before today doesn’t really matter.” He chuckled. I clasped my lips together and just simply nodded my head.
“Touché Xander. Forgive me for assuming f*****g around with someone consistently for the past 6 months meant something. You see, that is why people always call me a b***h, because I shut people out and try not to get close to them. It’s because of guys like you and you…” I turned around and pointed to the guy behind me “That say one thing and do another, with no regard to anyone’s feelings but their own. So, thank you both for making me the cold heartless b***h you will know from now on.” I snapped.
“I don’t know why you are overreacting to this Lena. You knew we were not official. I want to make us to be something. Are you really going to throw the time we had away?” He was trying to be sly and sweet, yeah, that was not going to work.
I walked up to him and batted my long lashes to him. “You know Xander, you’re right. You are always right. I was overreacting. We never had a label on us, so why would it matter?” I said. I turned around and looked over my shoulder. “Forgive me?”
“Of cour- “and with that, I punched him in his nose, and I heard a c***k. Yep. I broke his nose. I shook my hand as I hissed after the contact to his face, my knuckles already turning red. Yeah, that is so going to bruise.
“Holy hell Lena!” Kyle screamed. The three of them stood there in shock as Xander clasped his hands around his nose.
“You crazy psychotic b***h!” he screamed. “Coach is so going to hear about this.”
“All coach is going to say to me is ‘I told you so’. You see sweetheart, they didn’t want us seeing each other to begin with. And you made the wonderful mistake of doing this, because guess who’s in charge of the open skate try outs tomorrow. Yep. Me. So consider yourself replaced. You are officially off the team. Tomorrow go to the locker room, pack your s**t and get out of this city.”
I walked up the house where Mia hugged me, and Kyle patted my back. Those familiar feet followed behind me.
“You can’t do that! Coach will not go for it!”
“Yea...coach already said you’re off the team dude.” Kyle laughed. He turned his phone around and there was coach on facetime. Xander’s eyes went wide.
“Xander, get your s**t out of my locker room.” Coach stated firmly.
“You will never find someone to replace me. You will never find a goalie as great as I!” He yelled.
“Already have dude.” Kyle said and he looked over to Lucas.
Lucas shrugged. “I’ll do my best, assuming I make the team.”
Yes, there stood Lucas. Lucas was there with Kyle when he came home from the game. He was the one that made my drop my wine bottle and made my heart stop. He was the one that followed me to the park and tried to comfort me. He was the one behind me while I stood up to Xander. Lucas was home…
Xander sped away and I turned to Kyle, who was now off the phone with coach.
“You!” I screamed. His face went white. “Why didn’t you tell me about him!” I pointed to Lucas.
He hasn’t said much. He was always a man of few words, more of an observer.
“Surprise?” he shrugged his shoulder.
I rolled my eyes and pushed by everyone and headed to my room.
“He needs a place to crash so he is staying in the spare room.” Kyle yelled from the bottom of the stairs. I groaned and slammed my door shut.
I started pacing back and forth not knowing what to do. I just “broke up” with the guy I have bee sleeping with the past 6 months and kicked him off the team, leaving us down our number 1 goalie. Our backup is okay, but no where ready for the level we play at.
Lucas is back. He never even got a hold of me. Nothing for 2 years. And now he was going to be living with me? All because Kyle said so. Damnit. Why did he sign the lease for this place too? I couldn’t help but think back to the moment I saw him for the first time in 3 years.
My oh my, has he grown up. His muscles toned and on full display. His black hair, shaggy and he has a light beard. He didn’t look like he shaved in a couple of days. His green eyes still making my heart melt, but his smile was gone. That was something that I did miss.
There was knock on my door. “If it is someone with a p***s, walk away now.” I snapped. I heard Mia laugh as she opened the door, handing me another bottle of wine and sat on the bed with me.
I opened the wine and chugged it down without stopping. “Chill girl. You need to take a breath.” She laughed.
“I need to get the f**k out of this house Mia.”
“It will all be okay.”
“No, it won’t. Why is he here? He was supposed to be in Germany, living his life as a Marine. Why is he state side? Why is he in New York? Why is he in my house?”
“I guess that is something you will just need to talk to him about. Try to get some sleep, we both know you have a long busy day tomorrow. I will go down to the rink with you to make sure things with Xander don’t go overboard again.”
I nodded and she walked to me door. She turned around one last time. “For what it’s worth, I am proud of you for dropping his ass instead of giving him another chance. Most girls don’t have enough self-preservation to do so. And with Lucas, talk to him. You may be surprised.”
“Can’t you tell me instead?”
“No, it is def not my place. Just…Lena…talk to him and listen…that is all I am asking. Goodnight and I will wake you in the morning Love you.”
She shut the door and walked downstairs. I laid back on my bed, staring at the ceiling. So many thoughts running through my head to the point of exhaustion and with that, I fell into a restless sleep.
