My phone ringing pulls me from a troubled sleep. I open one eye realising I fell asleep watching over Zoe, daylight blazes through the curtains. I fumble in my pocket for my phone. The caller ID is emblazoned with my dad’s number. I immediately jolt upright, then I consider for just a moment sending him to voicemail. Common sense kicks in, he will have been told about Zoe and if I don’t answer him he’ll only end up coming here in person and that is the last thing we need on top of all of this mess. I try to make my tone light and normal sounding as I answer. “Hello father everything okay?” I can hear he’s breathing heavy on the other side, here we go! “Son I have the most incredibly amazing news!” Excitement evident in his tone, okay definitely not what I was expecting.
