Chapter 32
My phone beeped at me as I got back to my desk, and I saw that I had a text message from Bill Barnar. It listed an address and a time, presumably for my meeting with his contact in the underground. It also included the message DON’T EVER COME BACK. I put my phone down quickly when I saw Duffy, who pulled up a chair and sat down across from me.
“We need to clear the air,” he said.
“You’re right,” I answered. “But not right now. I need to go meet somebody.”
“You were always a good partner before this started,” he said. “And now look at you. You’re running scared, and everyone knows you’re hiding something.”
“Who’s everyone?”
“Everyone who matters. Me and Alvin. You don’t think you can pull one over on her, do you?”
