I ended up losing about a hundred bucks that night, on top of the money I spent on drinks and a burger. It was an expensive way to get back into the office social life. I didn’t get home till very late, at which point I just threw myself onto the bed without even bothering to get undressed.
My phone rang at three that morning, when I had only been asleep for about an hour. I picked it up, mumbled something incoherent into it without opening my eyes, and then sat straight up when I heard Father’s voice.
