The worst part was waiting. Waiting for Conrad to come home. Waiting to see if he would come home, or if he would stay over. Waiting to hear how his first date with our mate went. Waiting to find out how close they had become. I hated waiting, but I was also happy for my twin. It just made things so much harder. I sighed as I finally switched off the TV. It was well past midnight. If he was going to come home, he would have already, right? I had no idea, but suddenly the thought of him catching me alone in the living room made me jump up. I hurried to my room and closed the door. I didn’t waste any time as I stripped off my clothes and pulled on a pair of boxer shorts. I was in bed with the lights off within minutes, but the silence was deafening. Would he come home? Would he come to me if he did? I squeezed my eyes closed as the pain in my chest grew.
“Get a grip, Cal,” I scolded myself softly. I wasn’t even sure why I was somewhat upset. It wasn’t that I didn’t want my brother to have a good time, because I did. I wanted him to be happy with his mate. And while I didn’t know Veronica all that well yet, I wanted her to be happy as well. But on top of all of that, I wanted to be happy too, and right now, I wasn’t happy. Not even a little bit. I sighed softly as I tried to will myself to go to sleep. However, the sound of an engine caught my attention and my eyes opened wide. Was that him? Was he coming home? I listened as the car came closer and closer until I knew for sure that yes, it was Conrad. The soft squeal of the tires as he came to a stop. The silence as the engine was switched off. The car door opened and closed. His footsteps as he approached the front door. The sound of his keys in the door. Open and then close. Door locked. Then there was silence and I frowned as I turned my head toward my bedroom door. Conrad wasn’t moving and I was more than curious to know what he was doing. Then I heard his footsteps as he moved from the front door to the living room. From the living room to the kitchen.
“Cal?” Conrad called out and I froze. I was tempted to get up, to rush to him, and to listen to all the details of his date, but I couldn’t do it. So, I remained silent and still as I listened to him open and close the fridge. Conrad then took the stairs two at a time and when he stopped right outside of my door, I waited. I could see his shadow under the slit of the door and as I continued to wait, I could actually feel him hesitate. “Cal? You up?” I couldn’t help it, I groaned softly. The door slowly opened, and I could barely make out his features, it was so dark. He flipped on the light, and I closed my eyes. “I know you are awake,” he stated.
“Yeah? So?”
“Yeah? So? How about showing some interest in my first date with Ronnie?” he questioned as he entered the room. I slowly opened my eyes and stared up at him. He looked blissfully happy and while I was happy for him, it hurt.
“How was it?” I managed to ask as I forced myself to sit up and smile. Conrad sat on the edge of the bed, and I had a feeling he wasn’t going to be able to hide anything from me. Not by the huge smile on his face. My brother was happy. I could see that clearly.
“It was…perfect…amazing…” he whispered. “She is perfect in every way. Her place was organized and clean…you’d like that about her. The food she made…fuck me, it was good,” I suddenly wanted to know everything, so I didn’t hold back as I asked the questions that were swimming around in my head.
“What was she wearing?” I asked curiously and Conrad shot me a dreamy smile.
“She wore this cute little red dress. She looked stunning, Cal…like…you already know that she is gorgeous, but…she is just breathtaking,” he explained, and I swallowed loudly.
“What did she cook?”
“Oh, my f**k, bro…she made this insane potato baked thing…it was rich, creamy and full of meat like bacon and minced beef with like mushrooms and…it was seriously good. She served it with a badass salad and for dessert…” I looked away as I noticed his eyes had glossed over slightly. He was reliving the evening and while I wanted to know everything, I wasn’t sure I wanted to know how they had connected. “She made this white chocolate moose with fresh strawberries and dark chocolate shavings…or whatever, but it was amazing,”
“So, she can cook,” I pointed out uselessly, and Conrad nodded.
“Oh, hell yeah, she can most definitely cook,”
“So…ah…what else did you do? Other than gawk at her beauty and stuff your face?” I teased. I figured it would be easier to act casually rather than worry about my brother further.
“We talked…like we just, we talked,” he said, but he had turned away slightly so I couldn’t see his face.
“Did you…did you kiss her?” I hated to ask the question, but I was dying to know. Conrad didn’t answer immediately, so I knew he had. While a part of me wanted to confirm it for him, I waited.
“Yes,” he finally whispered and, for some strange reason, I relaxed. Conrad picked up on it and faced me once again. “That ok?”
“That ok? Yes, of course…I don’t even know how to explain it, but I am happy for you, Conrad,” I said with a smile. Conrad nodded before he left the room, and I laid back as I thought about how my date would go with Veronica. I couldn’t wait.
