“This can't be real,” Conrad remarked the second we were alone in our truck. I didn’t need to say anything because I felt the same way. This couldn’t be real. Why would we have been blessed with the same mate? It didn’t make any sense.
“Maybe because we share everything else?” I suggested as I started the truck.
“Dude, no…come on, we are not sharing a mate,” he said as he buckled up. I didn’t say anything as I thought about the woman we had seen at the ceremony. The second she had walked in, my senses had gone on high alert. My wolf had gone nuts. However, that glorious feeling had been destroyed when Conrad had whispered that his mate was at the ceremony. It had been the strangest thing and then for us to realize that she was not only my mate, but my brother’s mate as well. By the time we got home, I was exhausted. Conrad, on the other hand, wasn’t ready to let the subject go as he followed me into the living room. “What are we going to do?” he asked as he flopped down onto the couch.
“I don’t know,” I admitted. The truth was, I didn’t know. How were we supposed to deal with this? I had meant what I had said in the car. Maybe it was because we shared everything. We literally shared everything. While there were some differences between us, we still shared the vineyard, the house, and the workload. We occasionally shared clothing, especially to annoy others. We cooked together, we cleaned together. Hell, we basically did everything together. We mostly had the same group of friends and while we did things separately, we were often together. Why would this be any different?
“Dude, I am not sharing my mate with you,” Conrad then stated, and I frowned.
“And I am not sharing my mate with you,”
“Then what the hell are we going to do?” he asked once again, but I still didn’t have an answer. Conrad and I had dated over the years, but in all honesty, we were different in that department. Conrad was strictly straight and extremely picky. In all of our twenty-seven years, Conrad had been with three women and one of them had been his girlfriend for two years. Other than that, he wasn’t interested. I, on the other hand, didn’t care about gender. I’ve had two boyfriends and one girlfriend. However, both of us had kept things pretty casual. We were waiting for our mates. Now we had the same mate. How was this even possible? Or even fair? While I didn’t begrudge my brother anything, I wasn’t happy about this new development.
“Maybe we should introduce ourselves to her first,” I suggested as I sat down next to him. “I mean, she may not want anything to do with either of us,”
“True…but she seemed pretty interested,” he pointed out, and he wasn’t wrong. She had seemed rather taken by us, but for the rest of the reception, she had avoided us completely. Who knew what she was thinking?
“Who is she, anyway?” I asked. Generally, Conrad was usually the one who was in the know, but he shook his head.
“No idea, but I’ll find out soon enough,” he said, and I sighed. This was going to be a disaster, I could tell. I decided that I didn’t want to discuss this any further, so I stood up.
“Well, when you find out, let me know,” I said before I headed up the stairs to my bedroom. I shut the door and sighed loudly as I closed my eyes. She was beautiful. Stunning in a way that made my heart skip a beat. Her skin looked silky smooth without a single blemish or scar. Perfection in its greatest form. Her hair was a deep shade of brown, long and straight. Her nose was small and rather cute. Full, plump lips that had been painted a bright shade of red which matched the dress she had been wearing. I felt myself growing hard, but I wasn’t about to do anything about it. Instead, I removed every item of clothing and headed for the adjacent bathroom. A cold shower would have to do for now.
“DUDE!” Conrad’s voice was loud, and I sighed as I listened to him take the stairs two at a time. I switched off the shower and wrapped the towel around my waste. Luckily, my hard-on had gone by the time my brother stormed into my bedroom. “Where? Dude, come out here,” I sighed once again as I joined him.
“What is it? I was just about to take a shower,” I said as I looked at him.
“Her name is Veronica Tatum. She is twenty-four and she lives in that apartment above the diner…where she works,” he said as he listed off the things he had found out about her. I had to admit, I was impressed that he had found out about her so quickly. “She is Blaise’s daughter…the witch who considers Josiah her son…right? You remember that, right?”
“Yeah, yeah…what else did you find out?” I asked curiously.
“That was it,” he said smugly, and I nodded thoughtfully.
“Veronica,” I tested her name, and I couldn’t help but shiver. In fact, I noticed Conrad shivered as well. This was going to be hell. We had never been in this type of situation before. We had never even liked the same person before.
“So…how do you want to do this?” he asked, and I frowned. “Do you want to meet her together? Separately?” I didn’t answer straight away. I wasn’t sure what I wanted.
“What do you want to do?” I asked instead and he smiled.
“I say we meet her together. That way, neither of us has to wonder what the other is doing…right? Seems fair to approach her at the same time,” Conrad made a good point. While he was the more dominating one, I had figured he would take the lead. I didn’t like it, but I was grateful.
“Ok, let’s meet her together,”
