“Oh, and I thought I saw someone behind a tree,” he said.
“Did you? Or do you just think you did?” I asked. He shrugged.
“I don"t know if I did. It was hard to see in the dark and fog.”
“Maybe you"d better not put it down. But it was spooky, wasn"t it?” I remembered that the owl and crickets had gone quiet just before all of those things happened. Wildlife has a way of indicating someone is there, or someone has moved into their area. Crickets especially, I can attest to that, as anyone can, who has had one in their bed room in the middle of the night making their racket.
I read through Brett"s statement again, nodding. But it seemed like we were missing something. It was one detail that even I had forgotten, and the thought came and went like a flash and was gone.
