FLINT WOKE me up in what felt like only a minute. If I wanted to keep alive, I would need a lot more sleep than I could imagine. But I forced myself to open my eyes. When I did, I flinched when I saw the sun shining down on me. It wasn’t until I blinked several times that I could finally adjust to the light in the sky. My bones and limbs were shattering inside my body. It almost felt like I was dislocated in all the wrong places. I groaned as I got up, shielding my eyes from the prying sun. Flint welcomed me with a grunt. She was still holding the small paddle in her red hands, her lips formed a nasty snarl. “Had a good night's sleep?” she remarked sarcastically. Guilt began to sink deep into my guts, but before I could apologize for the stupid mistake, another grunting voice could be h
